I get out out the shower after conditioning with nice thick curls. But when i put a leave in conditioner in my hair i have to run my finger through my hair which just breaks down those thick curls.

A fade would do you nicely. Get a light fade or a taper.

I'm normally a hat guy because I can never follow any white guy styles and all the fun black styles (ASAP rocky for example) look too extreme on me. I normally buzz it every month and keep a hat on at all times but I decided to grow it out.
