architecture thread
Since there is no architecture /arch/ board in this website and photobucket charging for 3rd party hosting destroyed skyscrapercity I'm making my architecture threads here now. Post dank buildings. I'm moving this thread from /int/ so please don't be like "uhl, I mean only Art nouveau (or Neoclassical) architecture is real architecture because I don't like glass buildings"

this reminds me of a shorter version of a building in my city, it's the one in the pic, Jk building, it has two towers and 5.000 units but now it's in shambles and only 1.000 people live there due to government and owners artificially inflating prices and tons of hobos living in the ground level bellow it

Kek, made me giggle

Architecture is meant to blend, not stand out. Modern architecture does it's very best at standing out through ugly non-decorared glass boxes, competing for the skyline one with another. Many otherwise beautiful cities have been destroyed by modernism

Traditional architecture (and I'm not saying classical or palladian, but all the traditional styles that developed together with its people locally such as half-timbering in Germany) is the only beautiful architecture

ugly non-decorared glass boxes

maybe skyscrapers in general, but it's a practical design for their purpose

i think you haven't seen enough modern architecture or are just emotionally fragile and excessively sentimental if you think modernism is ruining history. i think, instead, that building a modern building with modern technology in a traditional style is really cheeky and a silly thing to do

Having a couple monuments taking over the skyline because they are of importance to the people cant be equated to having buildings be as tall as possible to cram in as many workers as possible

I'm not stupid, I know why we build tall nowadays, I'm just explaining why it's so God damn ugly.

jesus, just look at that awful color "correction" on your photo.

that's not what the vast majority of population wants, that's what grandma and grandpa want. grandma and grandpa however will die soon, which is why we don't build for them anymore.

also you still don't seem to understand it
to cram in as many workers as possible
it's not only about workers. people like living in a city, and often they like it the best in the city center. a city has limited space, so you build higher, so more people can live there. because its what the vast majority wants.

but most important:
modernism = skyscrapers? are you fucking serious?

i don't understand modern architecture

like yeah, some of those brutalist buildings look interesting as art pieces, I suppose, but it feels like architects don't even take into consideration that people are going to live or work there, and have to see their building every day of their lives and want to kill themselves because it's so grey and industrial

Lord_Tryzalot

Balfron Tower was designed by architect Ernő Goldfinger and is associated with the Brutalist style of 1960s architecture. Goldfinger himself was pleased with the design and moved into flat 130, on the 25th floor, for two months in 1968. He and his wife threw champagne parties to find out what the residents liked and disliked about his design

Crony evil capitalism on the other hand has superior aesthetic art deco

GoogleCat
GoogleCat

@Raving_Cute
Nah m8 after WW2 it was capitalist countries that flaunted their superior taste by embracing modernism in art, architecture, music and all other walks of life while Soviet Union was clinging to the traditional imperial / classical style favoured by Stalin. While western art was boldly embracing abstract and avant-garde forms, Soviets required realist and politically unambiguous approach. In the picture on the left is Hotel Ukraina from Moscow, completed in 1957.

I think it is no surprise that for some reason authoritarian countries like to build monumental pieces that nod not-so-subtly to the times of the Roman Empire. Take Albert Speers Berlin / Welthauptstadt Germania architecture for example. On the contrary the Nazis hated modern / contemporary / international architecture in the forms of functionalism and "Bauhaus school" and ironically Bauhaus ideas gained traction in Tel Aviv. Internationalist architecture is also synonymous with the preferred style of corporate America in 1950s-1970s. In the picture on the right is the famous Seagram building in New York designed by Mies van der Rohe, completed in 1958.

Now this is partly speculation but I'd wager that brutalism was more popular in the progressive West (Capitalist countries) than in the regressive East (Socialist countries) if we do not take into account huge housing projects which usually utilized the cheapest possible industrial building methods.
