don't do stupid shit like BASE jumping and wear your seatbelt
ask for a cash price on anything before you get it done
if you have to go to an ER forget your wallet and use a fake name and address. They can't deny care if it is an emergency

Worst case: you almost die in a car accident and they have your info. Send them a few bucks a month and negotiate a settlement a few years later for pennies on the dollar. The alternative is to forgo the need for credit and tell the bill collectors to eat a dick. New address and phone number throws some of them off your trail.

The real disgrace is that ERs will charge 100x more for the exact same examinations with the exact same amount of waiting and the using the exact same treatments, procedures, and tools.

I'm not saying illegals aren't a problem, but you're stupid if you think they're the only one. Retarded regulations that prevent competition, government footing inflated bills, middlemen parasites driving up costs while contributing nothing, etc.

Bidwell

@kizzmybutt
Why don't people get a private insurance?
Because it's exhoribtantly expensive. The "few hundred bucks" you pay annually would be one month's payment for most Americans, and they would have to pay a deductible of $10k or more before insurance covers anything - and they likely won't cover everything, meaning that $100.000 CHF surguery (that probably cost 200k US or more) is very marginally covered, to where at least $50,000 is still going to be owed, if not the whole sum because the insurer says your surgery wasn't as vital as you claim.

To anyone thinking this is not a good idea: you're wrong. So long as you can get a good doctor, this is a very, very good idea. If I ever required something serious done--say a brain operation, or something like that--I would get it done in India.

Why? Because I know people in India, for starters, who could suggest a good surgeon. Visited this guy there, a family friend of my best friend, and he had a non-cancerous tumour in his brain. He waited about two weeks, had the thing out, and is functioning perfectly with full articulation and everything. I'm telling you, his scar was incredibly clean and tight from what I could see.

Cost him about $2000 USD. That's it. For brain surgery. Why? Because they don't give two fucks about ethics etc. in India (this sounds bad, but really it just comes down to 'no touching/pinching the patient.')

why not just start one of those "I inherited a million dollars threads"?
because I never inherited anything.

I did however buy a small business and then two years later have a kid born extremely premature the same year my business went over a million in annual sales, at which point I owed the hospital over a million dollars since insurance doesn't cover preemies and I made too much money for Medicaid.

Then I did declare bankruptcy writing off over half a million dollars in medical debt while keeping my business and all its equipment (tools of the trade are exempt). A business that was worth more than a million dollars by one accounting method, though that wasn't the method I went into court with.

and of course I'm not roleplaying, my experiences with Medicaid, income, and preexisting conditions are far too bizarre to be lies.

Tough breaks, but the whole thing is on you. You either selected really shitty insurance or you selected a hospital with a NICU outside your plan. Either way, that was extremely poor financial planning on your part, and inexcusable because you had months to get it sorted correctly.

You can blame the system all you want, but all I see is a dumb individual who made poor decisions. Fortunately for you, the system even has a safety net to allow you to recover from your mistakes.

You're a cautionary tale for why people need insurance, and need the right insurance for their needs. And you're absolutely the last person anyone should be taking advice from, unless its "don't do what I did" advice.

it's ok, I had no idea until it happened either.

see, the thing is SSI Disability pays for super premature babies, so no insurance company will.

of course to qualify you have to be broke. Luckily if you don't qualify you will very quickly since they cost well over a million at my son's birth age and you'll very soon find yourself broke.

@Harmless_Venom
Thinks lack of competition is why the insurance market is fucked in America
Welcome back from the Trump rally faggot.

The market is failing because in order to "work", like all insurance, it needs a bunch of people to pay a little bit for something they don't need in order to afford to pay for what a few people do need. But since a central part of the law is banning exclusions for preexisting conditions and the mandate that it must be "affordable" (via subsidies) to even the extremely poor means that you have a lot of very sick people jumping on the bandwagon, which inflates the price and makes healthy people who don't want to pay for that jump off, which drives the price up more.

Competition won't fix that. That's why you see insurers pulling out of the markets all over the country. It's not that the margins are too low, it's that they straight up can't run losses like they have sustained there and stay in business. Remember: The prices are dictated by the government mandate, not the free market, so it doesn't even matter how many companies "compete" with each other. They have to offer at least X product for at most Y price. There's not much space left to compete on.

It's all going to collapse on itself in a year or two and we'll definitely get single payer healthcare and all that it entails just like Europe, because that's the only thing that's politically palatable. People want "free" stuff, even if they have to pay for it in taxes (because you can always vote for someone else to pay for it) and they'll accept a suppressed standard of quality or rationing as a compromise to get it.

1. your hardships were caused by an already over-regulated and socialized healthcare system

The only realistic solution for Americans to fix their healthcare is to enroll everybody from birth, say from next year on and take money from their paychecks once they start earning.

Those tax penalties for not having insurance don't start until 2017
they've been in effect for two years now if I'm remembering right. Just at a reduced price.

Yeah isn't it also only taken from your refund? What if you just work it to never get a refund?

no, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it's added to what you owe.

your insurance company sends them proof.

covers nothing up to a $7000 deductible

It's basically forcing healthy poor and young people to cover the costs of the current old & sick.

A 7000 deductible is basically like having no insurance if you're young. All you're doing is paying into a system you well likely never get a dime out of.

The u.s. rewards the fuck ups in life and punishes the people that are trying to better their life.

As someone in Germany I find it hilarious that you people believe this. Most people here would faint if they got as low taxes/healthcare as you.

Germany is "rewards the fuck ups in life and punishes the people that are trying to better their life" on steroids.

the ACA fixed the problem by requiring insurance companies to cover preemie babbies and to cover people with pre-existing conditions

The fact ACA requires insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions means health insurance is no longer insurance. Unless you're employed by an organization that covers at least 75% of your monthlies, there's literally no reason to pay into the system because you can wait until you get sick/injured/have an emergency, buy a plan, and they can't reject your claims. So what we have are a bunch of expensive sick people paying for a bunch of other expensive sick people. This is exactly what everyone said would happen and it's exactly what is happening.

And even if you're not paying into Obamacare, you have to pay for all the ingrates on medicaid who basically use the emergency room as a "free" way to get out of their crack dens. It's the dumbest system in existence.

Please help, this thread has scared me and i am a new adult.
HSA from employer costs me about $80 a month. Deductuble is 2800 i believe but i can contribute to my HSA tax free towards it. Rolls over yearly. I have dental vision and a plan that covers at 80% most thing i imagine.
Is this good or am i throwing my money away? Will an HSA count so i dont lose my tax refund?

This is a solid plan. If you don't pay into it, you'll be "taxed" (ie penalized) around $2000. Take it.

If you don't pay into it, you'll be "taxed" (ie penalized) around $2000

1) The penalty is actually $700, not anywhere close to $2,000

2) The IRS currently is not enforcing the penalty against non payers (they say you have to pay, but if you don't, they don't audit you like in other evasion.) Obamacare is such a cluster fuck that enforcing the fee would be like making the bottom 10% of the US population pay for something they can't afford in the first place.

3) For the average 20 year old, it's pretty easy to decide between paying $4,000 a year for insurance (deductibles) that you will never use or face a $700 penalty you will never have to pay.

And thinking that "paying into it now" will reward you later is delusional.

Obamacare will NOT be in existence in 20 years. It's not sustainable. Kids paying into it now will not see any benefit when it's their time to be old and sick.

Why would i be penalized, does it not count as an HMO if i dont contribute? Im looking up into my HSA abd the offered HRA now!

I met the guy in charge of that study. His point of view is that, *despite* the US spending more on cancer treatment, the benefits are marginal and probably not worth it.

Also, relative prostate cancer survival rates will fall in the coming years since the recommendation against using PSA tests to screen. We were catching and needlessly treating a lot of cancers that would've had no effect before the patient died of other causes.

The hard truth is that investing public money to prolong the last years of someone's life produces minimal returns for society.

yeah everyone is best off actually not paying for health insurance, instead of paying that $320 a month you should just keep that and use it whenever you pay for care. i advocate for the free market solution of letting hospitals compete as tech companies do and removing restrictions/barriers to the market by removing all subsidies and regulation

Not really. The penalty for not getting insurance is 1% of your reported income.

also, the opportunity costs are MASSIVE. we would live in a different world today if it were not for the burden that we carry to divert resources to the growing tentacles of government in every aspect of our lives.
