Car ran out of oil

Driving my siblings car with broken gauges and the car dies. Checked the oil and it's bone dry. Put 3 quarts into it (2.2l) and it won't even turn over. No noise at all.

How do I diagnose the problem?

Locked up?

How can I tell for sure? It's not making any noises that would indicate it's seized. Unless it's completely seized.

Ya, running out of oil is a good way to seize an engine.

Throw a breaker bar on the crank, I bet it's locked solid.

Also, it didn't make any loud noises when it died either.

If the engine stopped running at some point while driving, most likely seized, especially if it felt like the engine stalling while going above 15mph and you may have heard a god awful grinding noise
. Happened to me on an older truck, once that happens even one time, its basically toast. Gotta replace motor or get it rebuilt. Always fun, always check your oil.

Hopefully your wasn't worth too much, probably going to have to buy a new one.

Take it as a life lesson to keep up with your vehicle maintenance.

Fuck I don't have the space or tools to do any of that. It was a ~$2k '05 cavalier. What's the best way to get rid of this vehicle and how much should I ask for it?

Do what I did when that Happened with my old Isuzu Rodeo, donate it for $650 minimum tax deduction and use the return as a down payment for a new car.

Fuck....I was driving my sibling's vehicle because my '02 cavalier broke (cracked cradle, undriveable) after putting hundreds of dollars into that recently. I think I just need to cut my losses and get rid of mine too.

What's a decent used vehicle to look for? at around $2.5k?

Throw it on Craigslist for $500

certainly not anything GM (except for well-kept Saturns)

Corolla, Civic, Mazda 3, Focus, etc.

Run away

I's pull out an auto loan for like $5k if I were you, get a decent car that'll last another 10 years and get your money's worth. Cheap cars break all the time, I'm 20 and took out 6.5k loan with a 6% interest rate. Not a terrible deal. Get something that looks nice and runs well. You'll be glad you did.

Got the loan for an '06 Eclipse that runs great and is a pretty fun car, insurance is like $110 a month though. started around $150 cuz I live in California...

Aussie here get a 3rd gen 1999+ chev lumina unkillable cheap and turns

sub frame is $160 on ebay. How difficult could it be to replace myself?

Its not the subframe thats broken, its going to be the bottom half of your engine/motor. basically the part of the car that goes

Oh I'm talking about my cavalier, not the one that seized.

With my cavalier, when the wheel is pointed straight, the front passenger wheel is turned about 15 degrees to the right.

Difficult.

Get rid of the car

Cry harder newfag

Part it out for best financial return. Buyers do all the work.

Maybe it's just the alternator? It could have been coincidentally very low on oil.

>05 Cavalier
>seized engine
Let me guess, 140-160k miles?

Swap in a 2.2 turbo ecotec

Did the idiot light come on before or after it died?

It didn't come on at all. The gauges are broken. The car just suddenly shut off at an intersection while I was idling and then I couldn't get it to crank or turnover.

Same symptoms as when the other cavalier's alternator died.

Well, get it home, and do the breaker bar thing.

Oh. If you don't have a breaker bar and appropriate socket, and it's manual, you can put it into top gear, take the parking brake off, and give it a good push.

If it moves, it ain't seized.

I got it towed home. I don't own a breaker bar (but there's one on sale at harbor freight right now) - is their another way to turn it?

Is there any harm in trying to get the car to start right now or should I leave it be?

It's seized up

Try push starting it and see what's up

>gauges and lights are broke
Check the battery, jump start it.

make sure it's solidly in park
