The same thing I thought 8 years ago

It's a shit program.

Still boils my blood when I think about it.

it worked, it got tons of really inefficent shitty hunks of shit off the road

yea some corvettes and other nice cars got burned but any retard that woulda traded that in probably didnt take care of it anyways

furthermore i bet any money there will be a similar program again and again and again as the government presses the people to give up on gas powered vehicles

I can only think of robin williams when i hear cash for clunkers

>leased automatic FRS
>leased automatic Evo
You're exactly the type of person that this program appealed to.

>gotta have a new car all the time!
>gotta look cool!
>gotta be a lazy cunt though, I'm not wasting my energy shifting my own gears

It did get hunks of shit off the road. But it also eliminated a metric fuck ton of great cheap cars that were never hunks of shit. It took those great cars off the road permanently, because they had their engines killed and were marked for restriction from ever being registered again. And as a side effect, millions of used engines that could give life to other cars/projects were disabled beyond repair.

Good goys for buying new cars though.

I liked it. If I had a job back then I would have traded in my old shitty explorer and bought a cheap saturn ion redline.

I currently own that car but it's past it's prime. least it was cheap. would have been a great buy after c4c since saturn was then recently axed.

Ruined the used car market en large

In case anyone doesn't know what this program involved doing to the cars that are traded in

What is it?

Why? Why did they brick the engine and told people they couldn't buy the chassis or anything but the tranny and axle?

Because muh gas mileage, and to prevent scrappers from just reselling the cars. They also had to report each VIN as scrapped under the C4C program.

It was fucked.

Just think of how many of these little cuties died because of it.

Shitbox Holocaust.

>car collector dies of old age
>his family gives his collection to cash4clunkers

got a lot of garbage off the road so I think it was a success

0 since they got too much mpg to be traded in

If you posted the wagon, I would care

This.

why do I get the feeling most of you retards dont know what cash for clunkers was

it was mostly garbage SUVs and trucks that got traded in

kek

>oh no, uncle bubba's geo metro collection!!111

it was obviously Bubbas 2436 Camaros that got done in

>no lowballers I know what I got

Now Bubba's rusted camaro collection is now recycled, too bad he never got to sell any of them

Hurt the engine swap market something fierce

In the last five years I've seen a grand total of three carburated engines in the you'll yards and one of those was a slant six powered generator

>Why? Why did they brick the engine and told people they couldn't buy the chassis or anything but the tranny and axle?

They need to kill the VIN too in order to prevent laundering of stolen car parts into a new clean VIN. Cash for Clunkers did reduce the opportunities for people doing just that. For example, some stolen car rings operated used car lots. Various car gangs full of dindu or mexicans would steal cars, move the parts onto a scrap car with valid VIN, and then sell the car thru the used car lot.

The government isn't giving up on gas you dumb shit the Rothies would recircumcise them all

It boosted the price of reliable DD's made parts for 2 of my cars impossible to find and was a gross misuse of tax money...
So 8 years later i hate it more then when it happened.

More like cash for cuckers

>Have a dream of owning a junkyard
>SO MANY free/cheap garbage cars
>Cash for clunkers happens
>Now the only shitboxes left cost $1000+

Fuck.

Get out.

fucked the used car market forever and made our traffic look like shit

Horribly executed and did irreversible damage to the used car market

I bought a car under C4C, AMA.

Where do you live so I can rape you and drive your car into a river?

man you are genuinely a fucking retard

>hey guys why don't you trade in your perfectly good cars, have us PAY money to have them destroyed, and then give you money to buy a brand new car you didn't need in the first place? it's genius! it'll stimulate the economy and you get a new car11!!!

I used salvaged parts at the used car lot I worked at and it was like Christmas! CFC put lots of organ donors into the Copart auction system and thence to salvage.

I went to the auctions and it was indeed mostly shit that got traded in, but the lot where I worked bought cars with clean paper at auction then used body, interior, suspension etc parts from our salvagebro so it was all win.

>In the last five years I've seen a grand total of three carburated engines in the you'll yards and one of those was a slant six powered generator

Not that many carbed vehicles got the axe because they were long obsolete before CFC, but most yards did and do crush anything over ten years old to make space. THAT'S why you don't see a lot of carbed vehicles like you used to. A lot of them got crushed when scrap was high before the recession. Typical is when a yard has more than 100 hulks they call in a portable crusher if they don't own one and clean house.

>Have a dream of owning a junkyard

Learn how they work. You don't buy for salvage off Craigslist, you fucking buy at auction. Scrap is cheap so organ donor prices are low. You need land, permits, dealer license, to do proper recordkeeping and asset control so you can make money. Cut off all your catalytic converters then lock 'em up until sale so they don't get stolen. Cat buyers use cash and nobody declares that income. There are other tricks of the trade but you really need to work salvage for a while to learn them.

Obongo holocausted the used car market, hence Americlaps needing to scour Craigslist or go on their knees to stealerships.

>leased automatic FR-S
>claims 500awhp on a stock DCT automatic Evo with no dyno sheet as evidence

Cool post thx user ausfag here this is fascinating

Your Australian automobile ecosystem will be similar, because it deals with vehicle lifecycles.

New cars turn into used cars which eventually die and are sold for scrap, impounded, or abandoned then impounded. Dealers adjust inventories nationally by buying and selling at auction. Salvage yards get stock from auctions, towing companies etc.

In the US some outfits with dealer licenses will bid for vehicles at auction as a proxy for a private party. Copart IIRC is the largest auctioneer.

>Obongo holocausted the used car market,

Corrected for inflation, shitbox prices haven't changed much. A thousand dollar shitbox in 1980 would be about three grand today.

>destroyed the used car market
>at all OK

And lastly, since every crushed car led to a purchase, the overall pool of vehicles was not reduced.

>inflation was less almost 40 years ago
Really makes you think

>plenty of running shitboxes pre-c4c
>a fair amount get traded in
>supply goes down, demand remains the same
>shitbox prices increase as a result

i am probably the most liberal pro-bernie hippy socialist person you'll ever meet, but even i thought it was retarded.

the main problem i had with it was that they would destroy the engine of the car and make it unusable. it was such a waste. people were trading in nearly brand new jeep liberties and they were being sent to the scrapyard. the least they could have done is donate them to charitable organizations or maybe use them to replace aging vehicles in government fleets.

another problem was that it ultimately failed to achieve it's intended goal, stimulating the US auto industry. you can look it up yourself, but the top makes of cars that were sold under this program were asian (honda, toyota), not american.

i think this poor program really just reflects the incredible panic the government was facing at the time and how they probably rushed a solution out the door without much though, just because they were so desperate to get some activity in the economy.

university studies have shown that the program had a net cost of 2000 per car and the average improvement in fuel efficiency was .8 gallons per mile.

SUV's were the most traded in, but some of interestest are:

>Americans

A friend of mine asked me about this a while back and after I briefly explained it to him he compared it to gun buy back programs.

It was a good idea in theory, but the amount of old classics that got junked is frustrating.

it was retarded in theory as well

all it did was make people give up an asset they own, and get into a lease they cant afford to cause a temporary upward blip in the economy.

I worked at a car dealership as a detailer when this was happening. Wanna know what happened?

>Soccor mom or middle aged man brings in an older car or SUV
>CASH 4 CLUNKERS GIBS ME MONEY
>they give up an asset that was usually all already paid for, depending on the car it could have been as low as a few hundred to a few thousand
>they sign a lease they cant afford and now do not own the asset at all
>government spent months and months delaying payments so dealerships all took huge cuts from thier bottom lines waiting to be re-imbursed
>used car market is physically destroyed for young adults trying to climb the corporate ladder, many cities or areas do not have proper transport so cars are needed, and demand soars
>some people who didnt trade in for a lease just grabbed a somewhat more expensive used car, further reducing the market and inflating the prices
>hyperinflation in the used car market because of this
>2-3k entry level 6 year old buicks climbed to over 8k.

it was retarded from the start, let alone all the nice classics that got axed.

DELET THIS NOW

>1987 Buick ASC GNX
>1992 GMC Typhoon
remember hearing that these were completely fucked up

>(173) Subaru including (123) SVX
A junkyard near me used to have two SVX shells but they were gone when I went a few months ago. I asked my old auto shop teacher about them and he said that years ago he tried to buy both of them when they were still mostly complete but they wouldn't sell him them.

I really want to know how many thousands of Ford Exploders died from C4C. Even still every junkyard is full of them, sitting there with their 31 spline 8.8 rear ends and GT40 heads waiting to be used to make cool shit.

Junkyard find thread?

>6 year old cars for 2-3k
>you will never experience this

Why is a 1000 dollar shitbox I could have bought in 2005 easily worth 2-5 times as much nowadays.
I purely want to debate roadworthy cars that were removed or hidden from the market, not just cheap unreliable junkyard bait.
Shitbox being a 15-20 year old car at the bottom of its depreciation curve, something which would have had its MSRP just below government defined poverty level annual income.

An 82 Mitsubishi Colt or 91 Paseo at their depreciation bottom was close to 10-15% of the MSRP. Looking at more expensive suvs, an 86 Jimmy or 90 4runner was similar. Good luck finding an 03 Sentra or 02 Xterra/Trailblazer/Highlander for 15% of their MSRP.
Much more expensive cars still get heavy depreciation hits, full size lux cars and SUVs, but all the cheap shit somehow grew a higher floor. I wonder when it will change, because when prices of cheap cars remains the same from after the first depreciation hit through when it should floor (3-15 years) who in their right mind would pay the same for an older higher mileage car.

i was old enough that I needed a car right after this shit. Being in an area that uses road salt all winter it further inflated the price.

All that was left was the grandma gold 98-2003 ish yeah Buick lesabres for 7k+

Fucking this...

Arguably Obama's worst legacy imo

>(15) Isuzu Vehicross

Whoever sentenced these to death needs to be destroyed with the car. This is a fucking disgrace.

never forget this gore of a 2000 volvo T6 twin turbo and how long it took to die with that silicate shit in the engine

Does Volvo even make cars anymore? Isn't this shit just a Ford?

dafuq happened to Volvo?

>mfw

ITT: People who can't give up on the relics of the past.

If the car was worse less than 2k as a shell, it wasn't worth keeping around.

Meanwhile cars actually get decent gas mileage now for once. Hurray.

It's not just that we have a problem that the cars were sentenced to death when turned in through this program. Even if we were okay with that, it was OUR money that was paying for other people's new cars. Cars that they should have paid for themselves. It is not the taxpayers' job to provide for those too lazy to work for a new car and too prissy to drive an old car

>all the 2k cars are gone
>3k cars will totally not go up in price :^)

>meanwhile cars actually get decent gas mileage for once

I see some pretty simple stagnation, cars are still going to get heavier

why the fuck does your time axis decrease to the right?

great because it make the poorfags suffer with buy here pay here

It got a lot of trucks and SUVs off the

As someone who only does cars and motorcycles I am grateful. Crash safety ratings can't save you from a bumper at neck level or piss poor visiblity plus soccer moms.

wanna bet it was divorced wives who got their "fair share" in shit they didn't actually want or care about?

You can find 5 year old econoboxes for $3k where I am. Granted you're looking at really shitty stuff, usually unreliable things with rebuild/salvage titles.

I'd say. Why give a fuck about that shitbox?

And out of those thousand Cavaliers, how many hundreds of them could have been bought by people without much money who need a car? College students, part-timers, the unemployed, etc?

Not everyone gets everything on a silver platter.

his new shitbox will be values at 3G.
it's the circle of life, hanukah matoto.

It didn't MAKE people do anything, and the classics that got axed were all fucked anyways.

Of course it was a bad policy, and a fantastic example of big business and the gov't double-niggering people, but all those dipshits trading in cars for leaser were strivers who would've fucked themselves in some way anyways.

We had a similar thing in the UK called the scrappage scheme, just as retarded. There's a massive car graveyard at RAF thurleigh full of classic and rare cars that are registered as scrap and can't ever be on the road legally again. It makes me unreasonably angry.

>All those MGBs
And nothing of valve was ever lost...

On the down side, is that a Volkswagen Corrado that is just left to rot? What animals.

It was a holocaust for OBD1/OBD2 cars and other cars without front and rear cameras, electronic steering, brakes and acceleration and GPS.

awww are you guys mad that now you fucking poorfags arnt able to easily get cars any more?????
