So I have mods installed but they do nothing. I have bigger galaxies and multiple crisis installed and enabled in the client. I don't get options to generate bigger galaxies and when I try to spawn a second crisis with the console I get the same problems with vanilla Stellaris. Any ideas?

I often spend most of the early game 2-3 above the cap. It's that uncomfortable spot where you need to expand but don't have the resources to lay the blueprint down for the sector yet.
I never take the ascension for core worlds though, it's always a huge waste later on.

You allowed an Early Space Age primitive civ to exist in your borders? Immediately invade them if it doesn't conflict with your ethos. If you haven't contacted any other civs, they won't get butthurt about it, and the stellar culture shock time is way lower than if you had invaded any other stage. Afterburners. You should get rid of the shields period on them after cruisers become commonplace. I'd even argue you should stop using them at all once you have a strong enough economy to support a destroyer fodder force. Torpedo corvettes are a meme.
