And no, this isn't a "da jooz" post - both the USSR and USA needed that image of Germany after the war to justify their actions to their people. The USA sent hundreds of thousands of young men to their deaths in a foreign war and gave billions and billions of dollars in aid and materiel to a state which was ideologically opposed to every core "American" value and who, after surviving the war because of American aid, for more than four decades threatened western civilization et al with nuclear war while engaging in proxy wars and espionage (propping up genocidal maniacs was one of their favorite tricks) all over the globe. The justification for this was essentially "Nazis and Japs were so evil that all of that was worth it". Pull at that thread and everything one knows and believes in - civically - begins to unravel.
It really made me think when I realized that when Western countries declared war on Nazi Germany (1939 for France and the United Kingdom and 1941 for the Soviet Union) their greatest crime, the Holocaust, wasn't committed yet.
As of 1939, there was no reason to consider Nazi Germany worse than the Soviet Union. The Nazis had, at most, enacted anti-semitic legislation and sponsored pogroms, while the Soviets had, in the previous 10 years, deliberately starved millions to death and deported hundreds of thousands to Siberia.
I think as we get further into the future, the 20th Century European Wars will be viewed more holistically, and with greater objectivity, putting Germany in a more sympathetic light.
The US will be less protective of it's myths, and all those who had grandparents who fought and died will barely remember how costly the wars were at the time.
We are already starting to see it with WWI, where no one side is really viewed as in the right, and the mechanisms underlying the whole "powederkeg" are more clearly understood.
This will be around the same time that laws forbidding certain questions surround the German attempt to solve the Jewish Question will be repealed, so it might take a while.
I don't really care about Jews, and I consider their internment during the war to be a reasonable anti-partisan measure, but German policy towards slavs was really cruel and inhumane. During the Siege of Leningrad Hitler really did want to erase the entire city from the map, taking its population with it.
