Skills do make the character, and characters at 6* get more powerful skills than characters at 5* in general no matter their base rarity, with few exceptions. The same can be assumed for 7*.

Honestly at this point my desire to play this game is gone. I think the ticket system is decent and allowing people to compete with 4* units was a great idea as not many games choose to do so. Sure, if you want to get that rare unit, you either get lucky or spend dosh. But now it's just going to be even rarer and what, 80% of the pool is going to be even more obsolete than now.

Fucking this, I've tried picking the game up 4 times now and all it is is endless grind and autoing through everything. Grind orbs for abilities, hone abiltiies so you can actually use them more than twice, grind for leveling weapons, grind for leveling SBs. And then once you have enough mythril to pull, you end up 1/11 with a shitty SSB for a character you don't give a fuck about. The endgame where you actually have resources and are forced to use strategy looks really fun, but for the life of me I can't bring myself to get to that point.
