That’s always better imo. You can work towards your merges with non rng gated rewards. And here I am sitting on +9 Rein and Nino, with 40k feathers as of tonight, and no new banner in sight as well as a legendary banner once again teased at end of month.

If doing bladetome then +atk with Deathblow is preferable. With speed boon and Hone she only hits what, 35? She gets little out of speed and more out of attack. Without attack boon you’re better off pursuing other builds like keen wolf or raven.

That's actually a solid start though.

Units are actually not bad for starting out, very balanced if you know what you're doing and easy to skill up, but overall you also don't have any hard-carry units (Nino, Reinhardt, Bow Lyn, etc) and thus people will likely tell you to reroll.
If Merric is +spd, or -hp +whatever then he's a decent option.

Merric is a pretty harsh pity breaker (especially since pretty much any other 5* in the green pool is better) but outside of that you got both a dancer and well balanced barracks

Flier blades can reach +30 attack with the full buff suite so they are very valuable in player hands. If we ever get content again, she might come in handy. I'd argue she's the worst blade-user of the three flier tomes, though.

Honestly, I'd go for a solid red/green start, since you get BLyn and Fjorm for free, but if you like it then keep going.

Merric is abit too balanced where he's not good at anything, but with proper IVs you can make use of him. With -hp +res you can give him Fury for truly jack-of-all trades build, otherwise +spd -res/-hp for very solid prf-based attacks (you can with either of prf tomes). Lastly if you get a Taco then CC works good with his balanced stats.

Saber is a mediocre sword and Merric is a bad green mage without good IVs and investment. Brave Lucina and Azura are great support units but they can't carry you through tougher content.

Unless you like those units I'd reroll, especially if that Lucina was your free Brave unit pick.

What's the cut-off for the 10k feathers? I'm at nearly at 150k points and in 3800+ rank but I'm curious about the next tier.

Every 5* is good at the start. His max stats are mediocre and he's not well-built for what a mage does.

Not even then. He's barely competent for the more difficult modes of PvE unless you invest a lot in him.
