Are they the most important nation in Western history, Veeky Forums?
>Charlemagne >Gave us modern England through William >Responsible for most architectural and artistic innovations throughout history >Absolutism and later French Revolution changed politics tremendously in their respective times >Napoleon
Many will reply "muh Britain" but Britain wouldn't exist in its current state were it not for its French ruler, William the Conqueror. It would have been a warring collective of German tribes just like >H>R>E.
France was clearly the premier nation in Western history
Jaxon Cruz
for all the ouaibooism the frog i am can have it's the mix of all the nation in europe and their conflict that have made wetern europe what it is
Carson Butler
By that logic Germany is the greatest country in Europe
Nathaniel Gonzalez
almost always getting raped by Germany though
>Italian wars >Seven Years wars >Franco-Prussian wars >WWII
Benjamin Wright
Probably yes, although its really the interaction between britain and france that is important rathe than either of them in isolation
France wouldnt wouldnt exist in its modern state if it werent for british intervention either
Liam Fisher
France was the most important nation until 1815.
Then it was Britain until 1900
Then it was Germany until 1945
Then it was the US
China is next
Nolan Cruz
>Germany >Germany >Germany >Germany No.
Nicholas Martin
>Charlemagne Connecting Charlemagne and the French nation is retarded. >Responsible for most architectural and artistic innovations throughout history No, just no. >Absolutism and later French Revolution changed politics tremendously in their respective times The French Revolution was cancer.
Landon Ross
charlemagne was german.
Jonathan Lopez
last one was Germany though
John King
>Italian wars Not Germany.
>Seven Years wars Not Germany and in Europe it was basically a draw
Also conveniently leaves out all the other wars where France was making the various German states their bitch: 30 Years War, Napoleonic Wars, etc.
Jose Wright
>The French Revolution was cancer. It still changed politics tremendously and is the foundation of modern political life, for better or for worse

I count the Seven years war as a German war
So France before the revolution is a nation

Just because some faggots spoke Bretagne or Occitaine at home doesn't mean that they didn't also speak french.
Kayden King
Normans were a separate nation, them speaking a langue d'oil doesn't change that.
William Campbell
Also, the Anglo-Saxons had one of the best administrative systems in Western-Europe, they wouldn't have needed the Normans.
Ayden Turner
They had the best, unless you count Al-Andalus as Western Europe.

Charlemagne was born in France but died in Germany and a good chunk of his legacy was the Holy Roman Empire, encompassing most of Germany so I'd say he's equally French and German. William the Conqueror was only a couple generations removed from Rollo, a Viking who took Normandy by force from the French. The fact that William spoke French doesn't mean he was French, just like you wouldn't call an American a Brit just because they speak English. What did the French even do that they didn't take directly from Rome (in the form of Neo-Classicism) or some other source other than the Gothic style, which is now obsolete? The French Revolution just sucked. It's basically a really ugly, unsuccessful version of the American Revolution, which it sought to imitate (so I guess modern France is a legacy of America, huh?) Napoleon only really affected Europe in that he brought all of Europe to bear against the threat of French Universal Monarchy under a Napoleonic Empire. The long term affect of this was that Britain ended up usurping France as Europe's dominant power once and for all, and began France's long and painful decline.
France made Europe better because the whole country sucked.
Andrew Phillips
>Responsible for most architectural and artistic innovations throughout history
Literally what? You base that on what exactly?
>Gave us modern England through William the Conqueror
Right as if you could consider Normandy "French".
Levi Foster
>peasants were royalists. False. Some were, many weren't. It varied greatly by region.
Gabriel Bell
>Right as if you could consider Normandy "French" They considered themselves French, see pic
Jonathan Lopez
okay but lets be real here, thats Old French, which is basically latin, so the translation could just as soon mean "franks" as it does "french". or william's army could've been made up of actual frenchmen. or the weaver could just be an actual frenchman.
Andrew Sanchez
It is believed that the tapestry wasn't made by a Norman artist, but by an Anglo-Saxon. It doesn't tell us conclusively how the Normans percieved themselves.
Adam Richardson
Oh fuck off. If foreign nations perceived a group as French who gives a fuck what the group itself thinks. Deadset contrarians like you are the lowest of the low.
Joseph Reed
Are you serious?
Noah Myers
bruh you need to take a chill pill. how a group defines itself is the best way to define that group, rather than by the misnomers and generalizations assigned it by outsiders.
Hudson Powell
It was made by an Anglo-Saxon, yes, but clearly for a Norman patron
Levi Wood
he probably didn't ask his patron about every word he should use so the point still stands

Culturally french Spoke french Lived in France Duchy located was a vassal of the french king Ethnically french from his mother and paternal grandmother
"Muh he wasn't french he was a normand" Yeah, at the time differences didn't existed anymore. Normandy was already completely absorbed by France
James Martinez
>generated their own unique culture in attempt to break vassalage with French king >conquered England, Italy and CS in attempt to become powerful enough to break from France >successive kings do go to war with France but lose But remember guys they're totes French
Parker Gonzalez
what are you smoking? Fascism was Italian, Communism was German, Representative Democracy was American (Parliament didn't represent the people), Monarchical Absolutism has existed for as long as there have been kings, and the Industrial Revolution was British. The modern world was built on the backs of every nation in Europe but France.

If that happen, the Chinese will be the next World's leaders, but first Russia must collapse, in the whole history, only one (true) Christian empire was ever allowed to exist, not two at the same time.
