Hero Merit is gained each map you clear; you'll notice feathers pop up above each surviving unit at the end. The HM stat on their stat screen is the sum of all gained Hero Merit for that hero is there. When you hit a multiple of 500, up to a max of 4000, you get 500 feathers. It's also shared between dupes.

It's called Hero Merit. Basically, the game rewards you for using a unit enough. You get >1-5 HM per battle, when it gets up to a multiple of 500 then you get 500 feathers. There's a HM max of 4000 right now, so you can do it up to 8 times.
