Was China more advanced than Japan before the Westernization of both, or the other way round?

Was China more advanced than Japan before the Westernization of both, or the other way round?

China was the most backwards country in the world (even more than African nations) until the 1960s.

before Dutch trade Japan, or before Meijin Japan?

Japan had controlled western contact starting in 1542. They then proceeded to buy, copy, and study everything they could get from the dutch.

Chingchong is never better than pingpong.

I'm talking before Meiji restoration

then Japan, because of the dutch.

Neither is Westernised.

China was advanced in that they originated many concepts and ideas. Japan was advanced in that they copied many concepts and ideas. Having always plagiarized the Chinese, the Japanese had no compunction against copying the Dutch. Having no pride in their own culture, they made a patchwork from the scraps of others. Having no vitality, their population slowly decays.

The question is way too broad.
If you mean ancient times (like up to around 500 AD) then of course China was more advanced than Japan in almost every aspect.
So first you need to bracket your time period. You have the end period before the Westernization (before 1860s) so you need the starting period.
Then you also need to explain what you mean by more advanced. Technology? Economic yardsticks? Military? High culture? Popular culture? etc

ok Xin Fang.

Historically Japan always looked at China the way Rome looked at Greece, as a sort of fount of civilization
Japanese considered Chinese philosophy, knowledge and art the supreme height of culture
A Japanese aristocrats education was heavy on Chinese philosophy and poetry
A wealthy Japanese household was incomplete without Chinese tea service
Particularly fine examples of Chinese porcelain were treated the way moderns treat paintings by masters

China was advanced than Japan until Manchu invasion

>Historically Japan always looked at China the way Rome looked at Greece,

Actually even more so than this. Rome also had Egypt and Mesopotamia /Persia to admire, the Japns had no-one but the Chinks to draw their culture from.

China was bretty good up until the Ming and Manchu fucked it up

Yes.

When westernization happened, Japan got behind it fully, meanwhile due to China's size, its modernization process was slowed by bureaucratic lag.

They they are. Many of them were fine martial artist of their time.

If you're looking for soldiers, you have to look at the government side of things. The Boxers were simply frenzied civilians martial artists.

Hey man. A blade is a blade. You get cut many times and you die. I seen guys bigger than 6'0 die because they played tough with a manlet that was hidding a knife in their pockets. Being a nurse is fun.

China until around the middle of the Qing, considering how China in Japanese literally means the "middle country" and they framed their culture, language, and worldview in perspective to China.
