Why did so many Germans decide to kill themselves in the final months of WWII? Thousands upon thousands threw away their lives while under no imminent pressure to do so, apart from intimidation induced by post-war challenges.
I cannot even begin to fathom the collective will required to end so many lives at once.

After losing WW1 and failing to 'break through' as a major world power many saw germany in decline during the interbellum (economy crisis, versaille treaty etc.), hence the general euphoria when Hitler came along. When WW2 broke out many thought of it as an all or nothing affair. Either germany wins and dominates europe, or it will simply cease to be. So you have to imagine the mindset when it became clear that the war was lost. Many had the idea that after the defeat the winning powers would dissolve germany as a country and even evict its people. Patriotism was ofc. way higher than it is today, so the defeat for many came close to the literal end of the world. So many chose suicide because all their dreams were crushed and the thing they valued the most would be completely earased and they didnt want to live through that

Not that the Japanese were without agency, but after the first year, SCAP spent a lot more time censoring people accusing people of war crimes then actually prosecuting them. Unlike nuremburg, the Tokyo trials were a clusterfuck, because they were so invested in making sure certain people weren't implicated.
