Second of all, Lincoln raising an army to put down the rebellion is what prompted a few of the border states to also secede. Its clear that Lincoln would have invaded the South to preserve the Union regardless of Sumter. And the nature of the war was primarily the Union conquering the South. The secession of these additional states was tied to that and not to preserving slavery. Lee's primary motivation was for the preservation of Virginia's sovereignty, not to retain his minimal slave possessions.

Thirdly, the claim I made was minimal. Lincoln did not fight the war to free slaves, that was not his motivation. He repeatedly offered to continue the institution of slavery if the CSA would end their rebellion. That is the plain historical record. Projecting an image of the great emancipator onto Lincoln is a politically motivated retcon.

Casus belli is a pretext for war, not a consequence or settlement of war. Freeing slaves was not a casus belli or Lincoln's secret motivations (which you cannot know because you cannot read people's minds).
