/SIG/ Self Improvement General What positive thing did you do this weekend edition

How have you improved yourself this week/month/year? Lifting isn't life, a well-balanced human being is productive, has hobbies, pushes him/herself to succeed, is charismatic, and strives to live the best life they can. Share your successes, failures, methods, and everything in between.

The sticky is divided like so:
>Recommended Readings.
>Some tips to get your life back on track.
>Study and Career.
>To-do list habit.rpg (If you’re TOTALLY Lost. Start with this one)
>Focus and meditation
>Finance

Basic Recommendations:
>Have a productivity Framework that is flexible. A mindset that gets you going.
>Use a calendar, like google calendar. Hours and shit for things YOU WILL DO.
>Learn to focus.
>Meditate.
>Do routines for things you should do periodically/daily, this should cover daily things or weekly chores such as laundry, cleaning, shopping.
>Identify and Eliminate conflicts within yourself.
>Focus on identifying the time wasters in your life and eliminate them.
>Focus on the essentials. If you try to do everything at once you’ll burnout. Little by little.

>There is no central authority for the /SIG/, everyone could copy, modify and upload the info here in a latter post.
>To future curators of the /SIG/. Stray away from PUA, and avoid Fedora stuff please.
>If you try monetizing with this, I’ll cut you.
>I’m looking to expand the ‘how to focus’ Area. If you believe you can help out/have tips. Please share.

Material reading can be tricky. There will be trash here and there as we're not Veeky Forums.

But we have to trust others.
Image related has a detailed list that an Annon provided on a thread a while back. If you got time to kill, click on the image, and read the descriptions

As time goes, the /SIG/ has had a couple of books recommended. I’ve done my best to try to get talks of the authors of such books so you can get a ‘piece’ before you commit.

Google a bit about the book, if you think you can get something out of it, watch the talk.
In my opinion, try getting the books “for free”.
If you read it and get something out of it, consider paying for the book.

>Freedom is having control of your life

You should at least have 3 hobbies/activities.
-One that will pay the bills, gets food on your table
-One that will keep you in shape. (lower you faggot)
-One that you're passionate about and might be able to develop into a career.
--------

If you're into lifting, taking the tips to better yourself should be simple; as you already have built some self-discipline.

Make peace with yourself and the way things are right now.
Stop thinking the world owes you, how destiny ‘fucked you over’, how those guys have it easier.
Accept things as they are, realize that life is cruel and your circumstances are the ones you were given. You can’t do shit about the starting point, but you can move forward.

Don’t focus in what was given to you, focus in what you’ll achieve.

Eliminate the things you dislike about yourself, about your life. Is as simple as, do you enjoy your job? No? Take steps to change the feeling.
How are you gonna make that? You either make your job more enjoyable, or you change jobs. Simple.
You want a girl? how do you plan to achieve that? Are you too socially inept? Work on that.
Are you piss poor and can’t afford a decent living? Work on that too.

No matter who you are, where you are in your life, or how fucked up you think you are.
You can improve your life. Take control. Move forward.
Dreams keeps us alive, fighting for them makes us feel alive.
About 5-7 years ago, I was a fucking train-wreck.
Right now, I'm doing fairly well.

Get some discipline, set some goals and a way to achieve them.
Cultivate yourself, learn stuff, get your shit together.

And realize, understand. None is coming to save you.
You got to make your way through.
You NEED to take CONTROL.

If you're still in School. For fuck sake pay attention.

MORE than half of actually doing good in school is attending, the other half is paying attention in class. So then do it.
Or stop it altogether.
If you’re in college and you’re not feeling it, take a semester to think things through.
If you’re in high school, don’t think YOU NEED to enter college to be successful. There are other ways…
Google just started hiring people who never went to college.
WATCH this talk:
youtu.be/iG9CE55wbtY

Some learning resources, focusing in code since I’m an ‘IT’ guy:
>duolingo.com
First and foremost. Free language learning tool with a really robust app. THIS IS A MUST. Learning a new language will help you out no matter who you are.
>codeacademy.com
Teaches you the basics, from the ground up.
>codeschool.com/
Similar to codeacademy.
>youtube.com/user/thenewboston
Personal favorite. This guy step by step, learns a shit-ton of programing languages. Give this a check and start watching something you’re interested in.
>codeeval.com
This one I really like, once you get your shit going, it puts you ‘objectives’ to solve through code, last batch are really complex.
>coursera.org
It’s a really nice online-course platform. There are really good things here as well.
>openprocessing.org / processing.org / codepen.io
These sites display some really cool stuff, where you can also check the source code and modify it to see what happens.
>freecodecamp.com

As for career options.
Choose anything you want, If you want to go into Philosophy or humanities, That's fucking great. As long as you’re passionate about it, you’ll find a way.
You can always become a teacher or a writer.

BUT BE FUCKING AWARE THAT YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME MAKING MONEY. Don't get a loan to study shit that will be expensive to repay.

Other than that, don't enter into something soulless just because 'I'll get money'.
You only got one fucking life, don’t waste it doing something you hate.

You must have a to-do list, it's pretty essential.
As for which, there are several options
Google Keep, Evernote or whatever suits you.

But currently I suggest you use:
habitrpg.com/
There’s even a Veeky Forums guild created to keep us in check.
habitrpg.com/#/options/groups/guilds/eeb30614-2936-4f1c-9713-117248d10149

It’s certainly geeky as fuck. But Gamification has been proven to work when applied to certain aspects of human psyche. Helps you stay in check and keeping your eyes on the trophy.

Stupid trivial things I used to do, I stopped once I placed them as ‘Bad habits’.
It also has a mobile app, while it’s a bit limited and on construction, it is free.

There are three main categories.
>Habits. These are things you do by impulse, not under a schedule. Can be good or bad.

+Go for a jog
+Sleep early/on time Sun-Thu
+Walk the dog
+Go for a ride
+Cook something new
+Go out and socialize
+Spend time at the shelter

-Smoke
-Drink soda
-Drink beers
-Eat Junk/Dirty bulk
-Stay up late Sun-Thu
-Fap [?]
-Play 1.5+ Hours vidya a day
-Shitpost

>Dailies are things you ALWAYS do. Every day or certain days of the week. Planned, they are only good.

+Lift (m - w - f)
+Eat your macros(daily)
+Buy Groceries (Sa)
+Read 30 min (daily)
+Practice the Guitar 30 Min(daily)
+Study Video Editing 40 Min (daily)
+Cook (We, Sa)
+Do your daily points in duolingo

>To-Do are, well, things you must do. You can have a checklist within one To-Do.

()Fix the shelf
()Go to the post office and send the package
()Buy the ticket to the concert
()Pay the landlord
()Organize my trip to the moon
—()Get the rocket tickets
—()Get the reservation for the moon Hostel
—()Buy some moonars to have some local money
—()Buy a map of moon city

Seeing the numbers go up (or health go down) is a weird sort of motivation. I can vouch for it. Give it a try, if you have no idea where to start, This is a good one.

Fill your bad habits, put the to-do’s and take it from there.

BUT SHIT FINANCEBRAH, NOW I'M EARNING ALL THIS MONEY, WHAT DO I DO WITH IT, SHOULD I BUY A FERRARI?

You save it, live within your means, don't go into high interest debt, keep expenses low, the more you save, the more you can put to work, and the more you can earn.

Passively earning money.

I like to call this putting your money to work for you, it's takes money you have saved, investing it, and getting a return on it.

I CAN MAKE MONEY WITHOUT WORKING FINANCEBRAH? ARE YOU FOR REAL.

Yes. This is how most people become wealthy, saving money, and getting a big return on it. How do you do that? Again, there are hundreds of ways. As a general rule, the higher the risk, the higher the reward. What you invest in depends on your investment strategy.

wikihow.com/Create-an-Investment-Plan

Read it and create one, it should tie in to your long term goals that you set and have written down.

Again, too many different kind of investments to cover in one post, here is a good overview of them.

investopedia.com/university/20_investments/

This is the risk order:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk–return_spectrum

I personally prefer Real estate, forex trading, and stocks. There is so much information out there, I can just encourage you to read and learn as much as possible. See what suits your life and where you live. And never stop learning.

FINANCEBRAHS RULES ON HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY SMART

>PAYING OFF HIGH INTEREST DEBT IS THE BEST FORM OF SAVING THERE IS, payday loans first, credit cards, ect.
>NEVER GO INTO DEBT TO BUY THINGS THAT DEPRECIATE, IF YOU CAN MANAGE IT
>LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS. THE BRAND NAME BAKED BEANS COME AFTER ALL THE HARD WORK
>AVOID ALL LATE PENALITIES ON DEBT
>BUDGET WISELY

and finally, the most important one.

TRY AND SAVE SOMETHING EVERY PAY PERIOD. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF ITS $1, SET A GOAL OF HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO SAVE AND FUCKING HIT IT, PUT IT INTO AN ACCOUNT TO BE USED ONLY FOR INVESTING.

Someone please recommend me some good podcasts to listen to while lifting.

Take cold showers every morning. Best thing you can do besides eating healthier.

One book I will always stick with is The Fountainhead.

Rand was fucking nonsensical when it came to a purely individualist society, but both the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged give valuable insight into the power of the uncompromising, productive individual.

on any topic in particular?

Talk is Jericho

Sounds like a lot of work my man. You're basically saying in order to improve you need to have/do more.

Why?

Become a Fascist and understand Fascism and you will be successful.

I've never been better.

In last year I finished uni, went from fatso to skeleton to well-built, fixed my discipline, relaxed myself, and finally rose above family drama and issues that plagued my life before.
Coincidentally last few months things improved in family too.
Got a job starting January.
Overall I fucking grew up, maybe a bit late at 23 but in my region/country and seeing many other examples, it's not so bad.

Oh and I totally lost the sloppiness I had before. Now I do things properly, I'm aware, don't know how to explain it.
Lifting helped me a lot in regards to all this.

Aphoristic literature is in the Veeky Forums wiki, and go to other boards for their recommended books, e.g. Veeky Forums, Veeky Forums, /g/, /ic/, /p/, /diy/ etc.

Most self-improvement boils down to this:

- Get fit and healthy (diet, sleep, exercise, meditate)
- Read and learn
- Develop some sort of positive thinking feedback loop (various authors have their own models and frameworks)
- Cut out bad habits, replace with good ones

I was looking through an old archived /SIG/ thread, and had just opened that goat picture when my gf asked what it was. I told her that I was looking through some old discussions I've had online and some stuff I contributed in the best motherfucking discussion place on the internet. The community in these threads was always amazing.

Then she asked about one of the goats in the picture.

Which reminded me to post this shit.

I just forgot to put it on there.

Fuck yeah. How have you improved your life in the past year or two?

Has anyone taken a job in a new place away from all your family and friends?

I'm graduating and there are no jobs in my field where I live. I feel like if I uprooted myself to a new place I'd die of crippling loneliness eventually.

Just do one thing early in the day, and do that one thing well for 1-2 hours. Also, meditate. It helps the most when it feels like things are toughest.

Woops.
Here is another solid books recommendation, review, and notes list: sivers.org/book

roll

I came to this thread to post exactly this. This annon is 100% right.

IMO an essential reading list includes:
The Book of Pook
>mandatory for all males, this is a guide on male sexuality and contains essential information that almost all young males are (intentionally) not exposed to these days
Starship troopers
>An easy short read. A guide on morality and patriotism thinly veiled as a sci-fi novel.
I will teach you to be rich
>Semi outdated book on personal finance by a meme author. Main message is that you have no excuse for being an uneducated bitch about your finances just because you are young and weren't taught any life skills in high school.
The millionaire next door
>People who think/pretend they are rich are much different from actual rich people. This is a bitter red pill on wealth.
The fountainhead
>This can be a hard read due to the writing style. You will get severely triggered if you take the radical philosophy or actions of the characters too seriously.
Atlas shrugged
>The expert level version of the fountainhead. Read it but don't worship it. It's a parable, not dogma.

roll

I'm in cocoon mode and my only slightly social aspect of my life is when i go boxing 5 nights a week.

I usually train everyday sometimes twice a day simply because cocoon mode has given me tons of free time.

I'm fitter than ever; I work 48 hours a week and then have 4 days off with tons of time. Cocoon mode is the way forward.

Nice job user, just remember not to become limited. Isolation is the enemy of self improvement

I have no choice but isolation now Phampai; nothing else is enjoyable to me anymore. Grills disappointment and my friends and I don't connect unless I drink alcohol with them.

My dream is to fight in another country; I just missed out on fighting in america this year but next year I think I'll get taken over with my club.

I believe when i do meet THE GRILL; she'll be someone from down boxing; I need someone with decent old fashioned values rather than a party whore. I've had party whores and they're all boring beyond the obvious sex; but sex isn't worth the effort it takes to obtain.

Isolation breeds dispair. Cocoon mode is a meme that rationalizes unhealthy behavior.

rollo

Joe than experience, I will admit some of the podcasts have tag guests but you can take your pick. Examples are pro MMS fighters like Jon Jones, or lifters like Louie Simmons.

It is also kinda not good for your health
We evolved as social species, like it or not

I fully expect a shittorrent, mainly to the tune of "fucking millennials..." but I'm still going to see if anyone can be so kind as to help a stranger.

>Anyone get over a quarter life crisis?

23yo britfag, got A levels in Accounting, business studies and maths, got accounting degree, worked as an assistant accountant for a year, quit 15 months ago and haven't done a single productive thing since.

The job itself was exactly as I expected it to be, had been expecting for years in fact, I just always hoped it wouldn't be as bad as I thought it would be. It was immensely dull and full of ass licking to keep people happy.

I've been really put off accounting as a career. I genuinely don't want to do it anymore. I fantasise about engineering, I'm a tinkerer, but I wouldn't know where to even start switching careers, and if I think about it I know I'll be in the same position but with added debt. I also fantasise about being an officer in the army, but I'm neither physically nor psychologically strong enough for it. I have all the right qualities in theory, but actually doing it would be a major issue.

I'm pretty much immobilised because I don't know what my next step is. If I went back to work after 12 months since my last job, I could have blagged that I took my last chance to finally get a gap year out of my system. Young, have a small amount of savings, between jobs, it would have been a perfectly fine excuse. Now the longer my break goes on, the more concerned employers will become. I don't even know what to go back to.

Only thing I can be proud of is I never took neetbux, I'm not a spender so all my earnings went into my bank, and I've been living off it since. It's obviously going to run out eventually though. I kind of wish I could use an exit bag and get it over with, but I don't want to hurt my family, and I'm the sort of clown than can never commit to a decision.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Roll

Can't join the fit guild, says it don't exist or I don't have access to it. also arcitea.com/ in OP doesnt work

It's pretty obvious what you should do but you're just deceiving yourself.

Go back to work as an accountant. If you're truly unhappy, go back to school and figure out what you want to do. There's no debt if you pay for school as you go. Yes, you'll lose a ton of your time but that's better than being a neetfag.

I know you're right, I guess I just don't want to accept the inevitable.

Do you think it's worth seeing a GP? It's "free" in the UK, so wouldn't cost me anything. I don't want to be prescribed pills that fuck me over, but who knows, I might be prescribed something that takes the edge off my depression and lets me get on with life. I've never told anyone about my depression, nor seen a doctor about it.

Are there any options to go study engineering in the military? Those often give kickass experience and teaches discipline (which it seems you are wishing your).

Also, if parts of your degree was in math, how about programming? Which often doesn't even require a degree if you actually do the self study, though going to uni to study that isn't a bad choice either.

boom

What about psychology, is that free too?

Roll.

Rololol

I looked into this when I initially quit my job. In fact it was one of the lesser driving forces for quitting. I wanted to use my time off getting up to army fitness standards and preparing myself for the interviews and what not I'd have to go through. That plan immediately went to shit though. If I were to aim to go into the military, I'd be basically barred from seeing a doctor about my mental health issues. You can't join if you've had depression in the last few years, I've never declared mine to anyone, not even my family, only anonymously online. There's a few things putting me off joining, reading other people's experiences dispel a lot of myths I fantasise about, I don't mean I'd be worried about being hurt/killed or anything, but in the army, there's even more boredom, and a tonne more ass kissing than my last job. I think it'd wear me out even more than my last job, except I'd be locked into a 4 year service contract minimum.

I don't think I'd be a good programmer. I have no creativity, I do most things by the book, like an accountant should. I've heard (mostly from /g/) that programming and tech jobs are really bad in general. I don't like the sound of that.

Thank you for your points though! I need to stress I don't want to just disregard advice and argue against it, you've given me some great things to think about. But the two specifics you've given I've already had long hard thinks about (you obviously couldn't have possibly known this), spent the last 15 months thinking about the army and put hours and hours of research into it, but I don't think it's for me. It's not that I want to disregard your advice, but I do have my worries/concerns about it. It's nice to have someone to talk things through with I guess.
