Hitler lost presidential elections to Hindenburg but still was given chancellery position to solidate political balance and in hopes of making NSDAP a simple puppet party. But after Hindenburg death, resignation of von Papen and burning of Reichstag, nazis assumed full power and banned all opposition while banning free election all together...
