Birthrates have fallen all over the world since the 70's, with a strong correlation between falling birthrates and access to modern contraception methods like the pill. That's the reason that even poor agrarian shitholes like Myanmar and Cambodia have birthrates comparable to the West these days. Africa has the least access to these methods of contraception, and as such is still pumping out children like crazy. You'd see the same thing in most of the world still if it weren't for modern contraception, hell the West would probably still have pretty high birthrates if all it had were access to condoms at best.

Grandparents had 8 and 5 kids respectively. Parents just had me and my brother. I'll probably have 2 or 3 kids. Kids are comparatively expensive if you want to raise them in a non-shithole society.

If you look at trends, fertility in MENA and Africa currently falls actually faster than in the First World.

The same thing happened in Europe during the Industrial Revolution. African birth rates are already declining (but still very high) and will continue to decline.

Most places with modern medicine and stable access to them have lower fertility rates overall in developing countries (urban vs rural).

Also even now infant death or maternal mortality is still a pretty big factor in those places.
