You're probably not doing it right if your back takes the load on a leg press that's 1/3rd of your best squat. Don't go so deep, and keep your lumbar from moving.

Deloading probably won't be necessary unless your squat is completely fucked. Just focus on keeping your knees forward and not letting yourself squat morning. Lower rep sets will make that easier to manage, but they aren't a necessity.
