Because the alternative was communism. America offered peace with honor, and explicitly decided against destroying Japanese culture so long as they handed over Tojo. Communism promised the complete and total destruction of Japanese society, as what happened with China under Mao or North Korea under the Kims.

Given the circumstances, most people would have done the same. America only wanted trivial things (no full-size carriers, an airbase, and Tojo) while communists wanted to destroy it all and build a new socialist state aligned with China. The more time that went on, the more obvious the choice became as Japan came to dominate capitalist markets while China had the largest famine in history. Japan even got nuclear reactors and now owns a sizable part of the US nuclear industry via Toshiba. Friends with benefits.
