Is there anyway to play a half-dragon and not be cringe?

Is there anyway to play a half-dragon and not be cringe?

Think of a better name than Langdedrosa Cyanwrath.

Everyone else is at least equally unusual/powerful.

just don't be cringe.
just try to play an interesting character that makes sense in the setting and not your sexual fetish, or to show the other people how much cooler and more special than everyone else your character is

Play a reptiloid masquerading as one.

>tail
>dragon shaped head
This makes it furry art. It's not cringe in existence, but it's a slippery slope from there.

>Be born of an unholy relationship
>Understand race mixing is wrong
>our flesh and blood are dirty and can never be clean
>Your soul is not bound by your flesh
>Become a paladin dedicated to seeking out the horrors of the land
>Use your powers for good hunting down monsters until you die in battle, your soul shining like a beacon while your body rots

Basically be a Kamen Rider/Dwarf slayer hybrid. You didn't ask for your powers but you get to decide how to use them

Like, how do you fucking justify for your existence? Some dragon shapeshifted, fucked some hos and you were born?

Dragonkin.
Fuck Dragonborn, you hear me?

But why would you be self hating while you are objectively more powerful than a human? Unless this is some meme shit and I'm fighting for dragon purity.

Maybe a magic ritual happened and transformed you into a half dragon. Maybe you're like a dragon blooded sorcerer but through convoluted fantasy genetic shenanigans you got all the dragon genes at once. Maybe you were created by a mad wizard in a lab. Maybe you're the descendant of a breed of warriors created by a dragon society.

I don't know man. It's fantasy, some up with something.

That motherfucker is the only good part of that entire adventure.

What is the history of dragonborn in your setting?

Are you the result of an alchemy experiment?
Created by profane rituals in the crypt of a dragon cult?
Are they directly descended from actual dragons?

Each of these would prompt some very different ways of looking at your character.

I mean, sure

Just don't be over the top about things and don't mistake race/background for actual characterisation.

execution is more important than anything. there's nothing inherently "cringe" about characters like half-dragon, half-demon, kender, etc. if you don't play it "cringe" it won't be "cringe". most people (idiots) will play it poorly and that's why everyone hates such characters, but assuming your group has some speck of faith in you and you can use it well then you should be fine

Because dragon and human hybrids are wrong. You can fight to restore your families honour after your dragon parent removed it. Same deal.

Either way you become a paladin seeking to restore his honour through deeds

That's how all the popular stories do it. Always make a half-something that's part monster, rebel against their evil race/parents and destroy them while appealing to humanity. For a half-dragon though. they'd have to be the sort with a more human-like face than OP since dragon-faced halfdragons are more likely to be villains in such stories due to unrelatability.

That's even more 'cringey' to be honest. Tortured self-hating hero is played out horseshit.

But 'cringey' is such a fucking stupid and nebulous term that it's hard to tell what context OP is using it in, so I'm not going to judge too harshly. I am going to judge OP for being a massive fucking idiot, though.

Is he an interesting character? Our rogue fucked him up good and he died in Greenest. 100% sheer luck

what isn't played out at this point?

They are to kobolds what goblins are to orks in Warhammer fantasy. They replace orcs in my setting.

I think you have to be relative about these things. Things become stale, other things become fresh, given time.

Your father/mother was a favored member of Bahamut's/Tiamat's church and shacked up with a dragon

Why would he self hate? He knows he's more than his flesh

Make sure to add this a 'begone thot' flavor as well because only reason you exist as a monstrosity is because your mother fucked a dragon.

The original dragonborn belonged to a dragon-worshiping religion made up of people from a bunch of other races who found a way, through ritual and devotion, to partially transform themselves. While other dragonborn cultures have spawned from this colony of dragon-worshipers, all of them carry some cultural baggage of either martial philosophy or asceticism. The ultimate goal of the original dragonborn is, of course, to continue along the path of the dragon and become the objects of their devotion. After all, the religious always seek a deeper connection with divinity. Emulation is the most extreme form of worship, and therefore the most profound.

I think someone who looks draconic as that looking to do good would also be interesting, something about book covers and all that

then something like fairy tale knight in shining armor who just so happens to be part monster? no self-conflict, just an upstanding guy who uses his gifts to help others. if you really wanted to get angsty you could have him be rejected by ignorant peasants an go through the "are these people even worth saving" thing, but that's better than self-loathing I guess

How much would a half-dragon display draconic personality traits?

Depends on which side of the family they spend the most time with.

You were born as part of a dragon cult.
Maybe to be an emissary or something.
Then Mom/Dad died and shit due to dragon politics or some other bollocks, you got to actually move out of the cavern and get a job and all that shit now.

Either that or you're just a throwback.
Dad had a little dragon in him from way back when.
Mom had the same.
Maybe even from the same dragon since, well, dragons you know.
You came out scaled as fuck, family drama ensued until the priests just went 'Looked into it and the only curse they've got is bad inherited genes'

That isn't how personality works faggot. Your personality is your genetics expressed through your environment. You're not going to make a submissive house wife out of a half dragon even if you raise her in a boarding school for submissive house wives

No.

A dracolich basically transmutated a bunch of kobolds into powerful and magical beings. There aren't many of them but they're highly sought out warriors. They're off limits as PCs

Pretty much my thinking.

Ironic, isn't it? That nowadays the angst is considered to be the boring cliche when that very angst first appeared as a counter to a perceived overabundance of genuinely good heroes that people didn't think were mature or conflicted enough. Now that we've had a few years of every other character being some bitter misanthrope who grumbles about how he has to save the world, we long for characters who are just pretty good guys all around.

I guess I just don't see why somebody needs to have a myriad of pathologies to be considered an interesting character. A laundry list of minor psychosis can be part of a personality, but it's by no means the only way to characterise.

Don't play a character specifically to avoid cringe or to make yourself look cool, play a character you like and play it honestly. I could play a greedy, arrogant half-dragon who also has angst that he will never be a real dragon. He would constantly try to prove how superior he is by flaunting his draconic abilities, but his personality flaws would make him all too human. Individually, these traits would make a laughably edgy character, but so long as no one trait is exaggerated to the point of becoming a caricature of itself, then the character probably wouldn't come off that cringe, or at least no more cringe than a regular character. Be warned, though, "ironically self aware" is no better than "legitmately unaware."

Your character would have to be a daft cunt to not understand where the characters are coming from. Imagine your village was being pillaged and then some spikey fucker kitted up in armor comes along, It is like things can't worse and the he comes along

Why won't lizards wear pants??

triple 8, 8's a lucky number in china, play it however you feel is right because the repeating digit gods said "you got the stick ghost rider"

its actually rad because then he can still be called lang, which sounds fuckin COOL

Genetics are clearly off the table here, since it's a fucking half human, half dragon hybrid that's somehow still alive.

It just means genetics work slightly different

No.

Testicles inside the body.

Mulatto goes to /pol/.txt

But, what kind of flaws would a character like that have?

By not being a thin-skinned little faggot who cares what other people think.

By not being a brain dead moron who can't write for shit.

So? Retractable genetalia isnt an excuse

Which media?

In most eastern stuff the non-human parent is usually like, a demon who developed a conscience or the ability to love and fell for a human woman but had to leave to keep them s afe, died protecting their unborn child, betraying their own monster allies on behalf of humanity, so-on-so-forth. See: Dante from the Devil May Cry series. There is a slew of other anime featuring half-oni teenagers who develop magical powers and slay evil demons that hated and/or murdered their oni dad. There are also a handful of ones featuring half-dragons where their parents live a comically dysfunctional life together and their kid just wants to be '''normal''' but its never a great source of angst.

>You're not going to make a submissive house wife out of a half dragon even if you raise her in a boarding school for submissive house wives

FPBP

That happens all the time. For fuck sake there is a Sorcerer Prestige Class built around "You have dragon ancestry".
Silver Dragons are known for spending most of their time in human/elven settlements, hidden as a mortal.

What the fuck do they do when the mortal they fuck gives a birth to a spikeball?

Fucked if I know, and sometimes it's the dragon who gives birth. Both Humans and Dragons can produce half-breeds with an insane number of other species.

...

Well...

It doesn't help that the dragon was the ho instead

Must be extremely depressing to outlive your children, your grandchildren, and so on

Elves do that with half-elves.

Not if they fucked a dragon

Simple, you roleplay as a fucking stupid half-dragon. So stupid you literally do not even have the self awareness to pontificate about the nature of your existence.

Can we mention dragons and not have the discussion devolve into dragon sex?

Any one with talent has left Veeky Forums. It's just furries looking for monster girls now

Non-exaggerated ones. Just because he isn't dropping to his knees and screaming to the heavens doesn't mean he doesn't doubt himself or his cause at a basic level, for example.

Subtlety is important.

No

Lets talk about this

Innately humans are attracted to power

Dragons(like vampires) are advanced metaphors for nobility. Basically powerful individuals. So it makes sense for people(especially abnormal ones like us) to be attracted to dragons.

We are discussing HALF-dragons, dragon sex is kinda implied user.

Love life of a half-dragon must be misrable, can't have kids in conventional means, can't cuddle, people who want to date you are maniacs obsessed with dragons and draconic features

Don't forget the curious deviants who want to know what half-dragon dick/tits looks like.

Your past draconic life gained terrible karma due to not acting like you should, whatever that means in your setting. Perhaps you didn't kidnap enough princesses or died when hitting a mountain in mid-flight.

So this time you are a lesser draconic form, with much to make up to. If you fuck it up, next life you become a kobold.

be a were-half-dragon where you only go dragon during combat.

I think one problem with half-dragons is, how common they may be.
If they are very rare, then playing one immidetly brands one as a tryhard special snowflake, even if the player would be a decent roleplayer.
If they are quite plenty, then it comes down to how the player chooses to portray his character.

Depending on lore and setting and visual design, maybe the half-.dragon doesn't even know he's a half and its just assumed he has a special affinite for a certain type of magic.

Half dragon kobold.

You are considered blessed by your tribe, and destined for great things. Problem is, you are a different color than your dragon overlord, and need to flee before they find out and kill you.

Team up with the party to find a tribe to call your own, become strong enough to overthrow your former lord, find your parent, kill your parent, or many other things.

Preempt this by making sure to remind everyone in the immediate vicinity that Dragons have THICC knots at all times.

i was thinking of playing as the son of a silver dragon who was masquerading in an mining town as an important merchant, lord-mayor or something other relatively higher class. Who managed to excuse his monstrous looking son through claiming "draconic heritage".

But, I don't know where to go from there.

so you want half dragon?

I give you half dragon

There is nothing worse than self-hating Dragonborn.

But Mario, I thought you said we'd meet a half dragon!
>No, I-a said, you'd-a meet a half a dragon, wuhu.

This. Brainwashed by smoothskin softies.

but what if the reason the half-dragon exists, whether it was the result of an experiment or of normal breeding, is to unite dragons and humans so that they stop fighting each other? A proof of love so that the 2 races can come to an understanding.

Or if it's the humans are in the wrong and dragons left them alone until humans started encraching on their territories, and the half-dragon was made as the only way to save dragons from extinction, but they only realize that once they almost wipde out all the remaining dragons.
Thus they realize that their monster half was the human part, and they want to kill themselves, but can't because that would just accelerate the extinction of dragons.

there is always a way to play anything well, if you leave your preconceptions at the door

Maybe lazy dragons ruling a kingdom just wanted some servants who they didn't have to replace so often because of lifespan bullshit.

Is tbis thing really an issue ? Only game i know that has Half Dragons as a legitimate choice is 3.5e . And as everything there with a LA above 1, youll be gimping yourself HARD to take it. No amount of ability bonuses compensate for 3 levels of class features, ESPECIALLY if you are some short of spellcaster.
It's not even snowflakey, its dumb as fuck, same goes for the other half-x templates.

Half dragons do not exist in my world. When a dragon shacks up with another race the child looks mostly like the other race outside of a few details. They have no society of their own and never will.
I also detest exotic races in non exotic places, so I do not allow it.

The 5e template basically gives you resistance, a breath weapon and darkvision.

Basically Dragonborn but without their 'lore'

Yes.

But not for you.

You are just going to be a thot magnet with that strategy

Not the same guy responding, but he's not very flesehd out IMO. Just a big blob of 'muh Honor' there to challenge characters to 1v1 duels and die off the next chapter when the party has some levels under thier belt

He's got the potential for a mid-term vilian though if you give him some actual motivation and time for interaction, because the party can very well learn to hate him in greenest.

You can do this by wearing leather armor with pants, show your sheer power and draconic heritage through your bulge

...Yes

I asked the GM about this, because his entries to the setting have a lot of Half-somethings

Half-dragon noble sounds interesting, nothing sends chills to peasants by having the man who taxes them and the monster who burns them combined

People would bash it like they do Avatar for being antihuman.

A dragon made them because he needed underlings to work in his library.

>now
When have we ever not talked about dragon sex?

Hell, in the old days before the mod, we used to have almost nightly monstergirl porn threads since they were banned from /d/ at the time.

What does this concept gain from the "half" bit, though?

Just play a dragonborn and be done with it

Some meaning was lost in translation from common to draconic so the dragon kidnaps a prince instead of a princess only to find they're not good bargaining chips when no one comes so the dragon keeps them as a pet/servant and these things happen.

I'd agree that's a popular theme in media with one exception, a secondary supporting character can often be more obviously monstrous while still being fairly understandable and relatable.

Yeah but in those cases like devil may cry the main character is still fairly pretty and humanoid at least in their face, which is what that user was getting at, I think. It's not about being half demon or monster or whatever but how you look the part because humans are kinda petty like that.

>just play a half-dragon re-fluffed to appeal to the kiddies

People have to treat a monsterous person normally because they are of importance?

Maybe due to this they are interested on adventuring and making a name for himself?

My party gave him the honourific title "Dragondick"

There are people here who are actively salty to people who don't always go human
