The glamour bard and whispers bard should be able to spend a minute being charming or scary without having to rest after. They should be able to use these features multiple times without having to rest, because they are really Role-playing features, and have very little potential to be used multiple times in combat without extensive Role-playing to earn it.

I kind of wish they'd bring back fighters getting a keep. Forge Cleric at 1st level gets +1 weapon or armor at 1st level, and another +1 to armor at 6th.

Ranger options' 3rd level features are leagues better than Hunter.

@Nojokur
I'm fully expecting hunter and beast master to get loaded the fuck up when revised rangers comes out. Honestly I'm hoping they make it so hunter doesn't get free spells but they can choose to use either Colossus Slayer or Horde Breaker once a round with Giant Killer just being a nice passive, using either Multi-attack defense or Escape the Horde once a round with Steel Will being a nice passive, and their level 15 stuff getting changed completely because it's all fucking lame and stolen from Rogue, except Stand Against the Tide, that one's pretty okay.

BunnyJinx
BunnyJinx

@Deadlyinx
It's not TOO suboptimal. You can still get sneak attacks (it just says it has to be finesse, not that you have to use DEX), so your damage doesn't suffer at all. You can take expertise athletics for some sweet grapples and give 'em the ol' grabby stabby.

Your real problem is garbage AC. You'll have to look into getting heavy or medium armor proficiency to fix it.

Illusionz

Seconding this, I'd like to hear other's thoughts on this. I see a consistency in the XGE to try to reinforce the most common mistakes people are making in 5e. It reads like one persistent attempt to fight back against the lowest common denominator.

Seventeen pages of names and twenty one pages of random encounter tables. Of the two, I honestly expect my table to get more use out of the names.

But honestly, they're both DM tools. The name tables aren't primarily for rolling PC names. They're for when a player decides to hit on the barmaid and you need a name ASAP. They're for when the group takes a shine to the city watch unit that showed up just in time to help fend off a cultist ambush and you need six names on the spot.

Don't begrude the DMs their tables. It saves them vital brain cycles for more important thing.

How the fuck did Healing Spirit make it through quality control?

@Stupidasole
This was posted in an old thread.

I had my warlock make a pact with a sentient magic weapon from Shadowfell. When he meets his patron in his dreams he's meeting the weapon. As his pact magic gets stronger the presence he feels when meeting his patron will increase. Eventually, he'll be able to realize that the presence of the weapon wasn't getting stronger, it's the presence of something intangible nearby it; the presence of the weapon itself has barely increased. He couldn't notice before because the two presences have an almost identical aura. After this realization, he'll start to ever so slowly discern the shape of something gripping the weapon (I might make it a full body, or maybe just an arm). If the other party members meet the patron even while high level, either due to the descent of an avatar/image or due to visiting Shadowfell, none of them will be able to see the outline wielding the weapon. At his strongest, what the warlock sees is still at best an outline.

For my setting at least, it won't be that these sentient magic weapons were simply 'created' or 'made' by the same person. Rather they are pieces of the same soul that have been scattered throughout Shadowfell (and possibly other places) over long and varied periods of time that have slowly manifested themselves as these weapons-- seemingly independent but in reality working towards the same grand goal.
Perhaps it's an entity trying to sneakily grow their power without others noticing. Perhaps it's the contingency plan or last ditch effort of a thought to be destroyed entity. Perhaps it's an outside entity seeping its way through an unknown barrier into your multiverse. You may never find out.

It's possible to take this further and expand it beyond hexblades and sentient magic shadowfell weapons, having something similar be of influence to all the party members. The seemingly independent character arcs all smaller steps towards a large connected final arc.

Thoughts?

With a dip in Life Cleric, that second level slot competes with fucking Heal.
Don't forget it ticks once per turn and not per round, so if you can move on someone else's turn (for example with Ready > Dash), you can get twice the healing! (Which, with life cleric dip averages for cca 140 HP.)

SniperGod

@VisualMaster
Ban the Barbarian player from the table. Apologize to the rest of the party for not acting sooner to get him to stop. Bring out fresh alcohol and drinks and change the feel of the setting by putting on the first LotR movie or something in the backround. Get into descriptive mode about the piles of magnificent treasure the party acquires. Just ignore the fact that the Barbarian no longer exists. Let people relax and run out the clock without pressure, if anybody seems tired, let them wander into off-topic conversation as long as that conversation is PG. Send everyone home with a smile. In a couple of days send out messages to confirm next session like normal, again ignoring the existence of the Barbarian player.

What loophole? It doesn't take grappling chains or other cheese to be broken (although it gets double broken with these, healing all participants for a total of 10d6*[number of participants]). The gods of this domain are often associated with knowledge, as learning and arcane power tend to go hand-in-hand.

Me: "I'M GLAD YOU ASKED." [dumps 666 page conspiracy file on table]

and

I think the Hexblade is still incredibly weak from a lore/flavour standpoint. It really lacks the coherent identity present in other Warlock Patrons. Given how incoherent the flavour is, and how loosely it ties to the mechanics compared to other Patron options, it still feels very much stapled on as a weak justification for a mechanical identity that the designers (or, at least, Mearls) were adamant on getting in to the game.

They probably brought back the arcana domain because of the Forgotten Realms, and a tiny bit maybe because of Mystara, but honestly that's not likely.

In the FR there are two major deities of magic among the humans, Mystra who represents magic itself in its chaotic state, and Azuth who represents the study and pursuit of arcane knowledge.
There are/were also Savras and Velsharoon but no one gives a fuck about them.

In AD&D something like half of the Azuthan clergy were Wizards, while the militant arm of the church were the actual clerics, who being blessed by their god could not only cast their spells faster than other clerics could, but could also study the arcane and counted as wizards for a lot of shit but they only counted half of their level for determining max arcane casting and caster level of arcane spells.

The big reason for being a cleric of Azuth as opposed to a wizard who worships him was that you believed strongly in the idea that magic should be used with care, and shouldn't be used for everything. While also because you wanted to collect loads of scrolls and tomes on the side.

While with the Mystran clergy it's a bit more weird since it's about raw magic and how magic itself is a blessing and the study of it for the sake of studying it is a fool's errand. So I guess her clergy would be mostly about people who are just buttmad they don't naturally share in this blessing so they pray for divine spells instead?

Say one party has 4 players playing as 4 different characters whereas they also play 4 different characters in a different party in a far off land, alternating between both parties each session such as session 1 focusing on party A while session 2 focuses on party B.

Just asking since my DM pitched the idea to avoid us getting burned out on our current characters, though I'm not sure if it would be a lot more work on his part since he has to manage the narrative of two different parties.

4E has better out-of-combat shit because it's barely constrained by mechanics and is more like a freeform system where the DM adjudicates what's reasonable, rather than referring to a list of tables and stat points and lopsided d20 rolls that let max Strength Barbarians fail to kick open doors that the frail Gnome Wizard succeeds on.

It also solves the wonky-ass issues of the 5E adventuring day and how poorly that makes a transition from deep dungeon delve games to sandboxes, since every PC regardless of class is running off the same kind of resource system instead of having, say, just casters who can afford to blow their load and trivialize anything because they know there's a rest coming up. 5E has all these rules for and assumptions based on the old-school style of "here's a 50 floor dungeon under the castle, go down there and sleep inside and roll wandering monster tables" being thrust into official material where there's basically no dungeons and you travel from town to town solving little quests and totally worrying about getting ambushed by four fucking goblins. The only tool in 5E's arsenal for dealing with that is "here's the time limit", which a lot of players find boring as shit and introduces another problem in clashing with the sandboxy nature of the adventures.

At-will, encounter, and daily was perfect. One could argue that cantrips, short rest, and long rest abilities match that, but there's still the issue of spell slots sticking out like a sore thumb and unbalancing the whole thing. yes this is a caster superiority bitch now

okay, but without out of combat structure, at least some, you still run into caster superiority issues. The wizard has the magical ability to conjure fireballs.

That means he can conjure fire generally right? Heat? etc, etc. Can the wizard use his ability to conjure fireballs to boil water for the party? how freeform do we interpret the wizard's abilities based on their mechanical rules in combat?

If you interpret the rules too liberally, the wizard is inevitably going to be better than the martial, because the wizard is channeling phenomenal cosmic power, and the martial is using his mundane muscles. If you interpret things too close to the base rules, then 4e has almost no out of combat abilities at all.

For me, striking the right balance between these two extremes is difficult.

And yet, thinking back to my games, it took about as long to resolve a combat of a given size (with more creatures in 4E, since you had minions and AoEs out the wazoo) as it does in my current 5E games. I think it really comes down to players knowing their characters' capabilities and not being indecisive twats about what to do and when. If you can declare, roll, and resolve your shit on a timely basis I don't really see why 4E fights would be that slow aside from HP bloat, which is easily solved.

To expand on the second thing, note its range of 5/15. That means if you're 5' or less from your target, you attack normally. If you're 10-15' away from your target, you have disadvantage.

However, note that another rule says that if you're within 5' of an enemy, you have disadvantage on ranged attacks. So you generally always have disadvantage on attacks with it unless you have some way to ignore the disadvantage.

I've been thinking over the idea of Apocalypse game where it's the end of the world, and some wizard has chosen my chucklefuck players to go save the world. I've been drawing the inspiration from the Battle for Zendikar block with abomination beyond the stars, where everyone is at risk. Evil Liches, God Kings, Elven Lords, everyone is pitching in to stop the end of the world. How do I get across the sheer inhuman dread, the exhaustion, and the misery of it all, and more importantly without it just tiring the players out to the point they become inured?

@Methnerd
It's a term they use.

There's "simulationist" and then there's "narrativist".

In a nutshell, "simulationism" is a DM judging what happens next based on what would 'realistically' happen. So in the case of dude using water elemental to break his fall, he'd probably say it wouldn't work because once your body reaches a certain velocity even hitting water will break all your bones.

"Narrativist" is basically judging what happens on such concepts and 'rule of cool' or what makes more dramatic sense or is just more entertaining. So DMs who slant more narrativist would let the water elemental break his fall for coming up with a creative, and funny solution to his problem.

DMs in the middle may opt for a half damage compromise.

@w8t4u
An actual simulationist would reduce the fall damage by a HUGE amount, and increase the fall damage for the water elemental. The water elemental is taking full fall damage period, no stopping that. Even if it's summoned a few feet off the ground, it's still taking the full impact damage because the caster's energy is going right into him. The caster, on the other hand, is cushioned by landing on the elemental, rather than on the hard ground. In all honesty it would probably work better with an air elemental, since water isn't actually very soft if you're going over about 150mph or so, which is less than terminal velocity. In either case, the elemental is taking their own fall damage plus the caster's impact damage and goes splat, while the caster takes some but not a lot.

It's similar to real-life situations where skydivers' parachutes have failed to open and they lock arms and legs for impact. There have been skydivers who survived relatively unharmed from a huge fall simply because they landed on their compatriot, who usually breaks most if not all of their bones and/or dies. And a person's a lot less squishy than a water elemental.

tl;dr simulationism takes forever and is bad, you should use rules abstractions instead

I think you guys are forgetting that water only acts like concrete when you hit it at terminal velocity AND the water tension hasn't been broken yet. I'd imagine a water elemental is constant swirling torrent of water and that may help with reducing the damage taken if the speed you're falling at isn't enough to just go through the elemental anyway. Personally I'd say half damage is the way to go.

It is good. It provides advantage/disadvantage exchange for attacking/attackers, with a reflective damage component, and anything that requires a creature you can see doesn't work.

It's 7 levels warlock and requires concentration. It can be dispelled or concentration can be broken. It also works like all other non-haste action-cast buff spells of 1 minute duration- it eats into the critically important action economy of the first couple turns of combat significantly. It compares to Greater Invisibility. Warlocks usually rely a lot of Hex concentration as a part of their damage, so there is an active tradeoff for using Shadow of Moil. Truesight, Blindsight, Tremorsense all ignore the primary function of the spell. So it's not game breaking or anything.

I think the material component is a very fun way to have a mini-quest for a Warlock who desires to cast the spell. I feel it is a spell that's most effective on any relatively vulnerable EBlasterlocks.

Hm. Two tankiest things in the game are Totem Barbarians, and Feat-stacked EK Fighters. At 5th level, you might be stronger with your 1/4 setup (but missing Extra Attack).

You can't be a tank if nothing ever hits you because you aren't a threat. If you don't control, kill, disrupt, block, or even force creatures to attack you, you can have all the defenses in the world and not be relevant.

While there are a number of Barbarian/Fighter Multiclass options, I would figure out the kind of method of style you want first between Barbarian and Fighter, and just stick with the best each one of those offers first before multiclassing.

For those who REEE at the mention of the Raven Queen, they usually get their buns in a knot over two key issues:
The Raven Queen features heavily in Critical Role, a popular show that doesn't appeal to grognards or mechanic-focused players since it's more of a story-focused game
The Raven Queen also saw came out in 4e, which is cause for hate by itself

I don't think the Raven Queen herself is deserving of hate, but Veeky Forums isn't one person and a lot of comments say otherwise.

In fairness, the shadar-kai's original fluff back in 3e was that they were a bunch of faerie snobs who swanned off to the Plane of Shadow when mortal races became a thing, then found out too late that it didn't agree with them on a spiritual level, and now want to torture all non-faerie humanoids to death in vengeance.

This is basically just taking 4e's lore and switching the base race from humans scared of death and striving for immortality to elves because... well, I'll be honest, I think 5e fluff/races tend to suck.

Beats me, as far as I know, she doesn't HAVE any lore in 5e.

In 4e, she was a dead mortal that some other gods used as their tool to bump off Nerull, the original God of the Dead, because he was causing problems for all the gods.

After Nerull bought it, they said "Okay, you can be Goddess of Death, but NOT of the Dead; you look after dying and judging the dead, but you don't get power from the dead".

Rather than be destroyed, she accepted.

Later, through opportunism she managed to scavenge the portfolios of Winter and Fate after their previous owners got killed in subsequent battles. And every god knows she's looking to add more to her collection if they ever fight again.

@Emberburn
Because she's the goddess of Death and Fate. Her job is making sure that mortals die, like they're supposed to, so that their souls can get processed and go on to their next state. Undead foul up the process and just cause a big ol' tangle of red tape.

What @TechHater

Sundabar (Shield/Mountain Dwarves, Luruar / Silver Marches, external walled city that was Dwarven-made and has a significant population of them but is plurality Human)

All the good Dwarven settlements were destroyed or fell to ruin long ago. They've got a shitload of ancient kingdoms just collecting dust or crawling with shitty drow and orcs all over the place. Dwarves were very much on the decline for a long, long time in FR lore, and have only recently begun to claw their way back.

The Shaar, if you're not using the 4E Sundering stuff that said most of it fell into the Underdark, is a great big kingdom with more than a million Gold Dwarves fucking everywhere and they're all loaded with cash (as Gold Dwarves are) and super prosperous, but they don't gather in giant cities since they're all rich as shit and want palacial estates all over the place.

For what it's worth, the entire Dawn War pantheon does appear in proper deity style writeup in the DMG.

Why they stuck them there and not in the PHB is anyone's guess. Personally, I would have left the real-world pantheons in the DMG and focused on the actual D&D setting pantheons in the PHB, but then, I've seen relatively little counter-evidence to my hypothesis about the intelligence behind 5e.

Zealot barbarian seems crazy strong to me, aside from being hit by a sleep spell i see no possible way to kill one past level 15.

Man to me TWF is such a struggle to make work, I'd probably let them use the offhand as long as they haven't used a bonus yet, regardless of whether or not they attacked.

Hmm, I wonder if this would imbalance anything. Non-rogues could attack and disengage on the same turn, probably only good for people with procs on attacks (paladins) though. Sword bards could cast an action spell and attack on the same turn, no blade flourish though (iirc it requires the Attack action). Warcasters could do the same with non-M spells.

Exactly. Coupled with the level 15 class feature that makes rage essentially last as long as you want, it just seems ridiculous.

@TurtleCat
I really don't think it would, because most shit that benefits from TWF either don't have access to the fighting style without multiclassing or have to take one of the worst fighting styles AND compete with their other, probably better or equal to, bonus actions. Also there's the feat that's pretty much mandatory if you really really wanna use TWF.

If you're allowing a TWF BAc after using Whirlwind Attack, you would do it by altering Whirlwind Attack so that it allows a TWF attack. You're nearing pants on head levels of why if you do it by altering TWF to work with other actions.

Get invited to a game
Roll up a Halfling Rogue
Therefor, to be worth a shit in combat, I always need somebody else to be standing next to the bad guy I'm trying to stab
There is only one "frontline" guy in the group
On being introduced to the party, the frontline guy immediately hates my character because he's a halfling, his character's history with them, and reasons.
We get into our first fight
Out comes the battlemap
Every single time I try to attack whatever the other frontline guy is attacking, he will always move away from them and the player shouts "I WILL BE DAMNED IF I EVER LET A HALFLING FIGHT BY MY SIDE!" in his bad Scottish accent.
My Rogue does piss damage
I talk to the player OOC during the fight, and tell him that unless he helps me out I'll never get to use my sneak attack
He lectures me about metagaming, roleplaying, and staying true to character.

There are days when I think the "RP" part of "RPG" is pure fucking cancer.

Bonus Round: Should I just go with this and have my halfling try to gain his trust, or just reroll my character, or leave the group?

I just can't get over the Kalashtar reference; back when I last checked, Kalashtar lineages were actually gender-based, because a quori only bonds with kalashtar of the same gender.

That's why kalashtars can breed with humans, changelings, half-elves and half-orcs, but only by way of the "Gender Equals Breed" trope.

SomethingNew

@Bidwell
Opened up Races of Eberron and you're partially right. They can breed with humans and half-elves, but the spirit only binds to the child of the same gender as the kalashtar parent.

But that's hardly binding canon for any main setting book (being in a single 3.5e splat and mentioned nowhere else),
and there is an easy way to see how flukes can happen, especially with two kalashtar parents. It's magic, you don't gotta explain shit.

1. Druid use entangle to make the clift more climbable.

2. Ranger use ensnaring strike on a 5x5 path to block enemy.
It doesn't block them, but it becomes difficult terrain to cross.

3. Cleric use barkskin to hide in the forest
Grant advantage to his stealth roll - which is probably shitty anyway.

5. Warlock keep on using feeblemind on a creature before the 30 day pass.
Must be himself if he can't count to four.

how does one play a Barb and get 16 in STR DEX and CON off character Creation?

happy_sad
happy_sad

So I'm going to break down how I see this Hexblade Fluff/lore.

Your pact was made from an entity from the Shadowfell that manifests itself in Sentient Magic Weapons (this entity could come to you in the form of a Sentient Magic Weapon, a fragment of one, or whatever you want it to look like). This entity COULD be the Raven Queen who forged the FIRST of these weapons and is using you to manipulate the events on the Material Plane for her own goals OR it could be an entirely different/new entity manipulating you for their own goals (Because the Raven Queen flavor is SPECULATION), OR this entity could be working for an even stronger creature that has their own goals and aspirations. In the end, you are being used as a weapon for whatever Patron you have made a pact with/perceive you have made a pact with.

Also

You do not get a Sentient Weapon as per making a pact with this entity, but when you channel your will through your Hex Warrior feature to a weapon you, are using the influence of your Patron, therefore, your Patron should be able to talk/communicate through that forging a pseudo-sentient weapon.

By playing a Monk or a Barbarian. The only way you're going to get solid AC as a fighter is glamered armor.

2: Dosent work, the spell says "next time you hit a creature"

TurtleCat

1. No. Unless it is in combat or time-critical, it means the party is usually fleeing from something, it consumes party resources, the bad guys can bang on concentration.
2. No. Wait for a bad guy to enter the area, then shoot them to block up the passage?
3. Amusing, eats up a spell slot, advantage sounds good.
4. er Five. Very likely to fail the saving throw (1 int!), and refresh the duration.
