Gunner Class Names?

Spamalot
Spamalot

I'm trying to make some custom class names for my players to progress through as they level. So far I have Gunner -> Ranger -> Sharpshooter. But I need one more name after that for the final upgrade of the Gunner class.

Can anyone suggest a name that is (preferably) gender-neutral and deals with more than just firearms (such as grenades, rockets, artillery). Any input is helpful as I'm also not sure if I have the class ranks in the correct order.

@Spamalot
Is "marksman" too gendered for you? I guess "sniper" and "gunslinger" are too narrow. Are "crack shot" and "deadeye" too informal? Is "gunman" too generic?

Yeah a bit, I'm not totally against just using Marksman interchangeably with Markswoman but I'd prefer something a little different.

As for the others, I was hoping for a name that could hint towards the class now combining guns with explosives/artillery.

That's on the right track.

@AwesomeTucker
Grenadier does incorporate explosives but it seems a lil too narrow, hellfire wouldn't really work with the setting very well, could you tell me about Tirador all I'm finding is that it's Spanish for shooter.

Basically it's that, but a) exotic sounding and b) not super obviously gendered.

@SomethingNew
grenadier (from French, derived from the word grenade[1]) was originally a specialized soldier, first established as a distinct role in the mid-to-late 17th century, for the throwing of grenades and sometimes assault operations. At that time grenadiers were chosen from the strongest and largest soldiers. By the 18th century, dedicated grenade throwing of this sort was no longer relevant, but grenadiers were still chosen for being the most physically powerful soldiers and would lead assaults in the field of battle.
Seems like a pretty good pick honestly

A Freischütz ("freeshooter"),[1] in German folklore, is a marksman who, by a contract with the devil, has obtained a certain number of bullets destined to hit without fail whatever object he wishes.

Somewhere between high and low fantasy, main idea is that the high fantasy comes from all the monsters and magic but the low fantasy is from ingenuity and inventions.

Not OP but that sounds like a branching tree from Gunner, specialising more in gritty pistol based fighting, rather than the Ranger -> Sharpshooter path relying more on positioning and tactics.

Yeah, the basic idea is that each rank increase the range of effectiveness and overall destruction of the Gunner, as well as the weapons they are trained in.

They are able to use grenades but it's more focused on the battlefield control aspect. They whittle down with mobile artillery (magic) and can hold their own reasonably well if the enemy gets too close. At it's core though they're not supposed to get too close to enemies as they are fragile.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the "man" part of "marksman" is not pronounced like "man" but rather like "min" (and that "markswoman" is all kinds of awkward), but I'd apply "marksman" to a woman as well as a man.

It is unlikely that there would be a specific special name for each grade if there were a bunch of grades.

Likely instead you would have an entry rank, followed by name 'first class' 'second class' 'third class', followed by a top score rank.

So it might be something like
Marksman
Grenadier First Class
Grenadier Second Class
Grenadier Third Class
Gunner

Unless I am missing something, I would not use 'Ranger'. That has a traditional commando or patrol meaning to it.

Marksman should be seen as gender neutral. Females are 'marksman'. The term 'markswoman' is not used.
