Looks good, OP. I'm not great at geography though, so don't rely on me to spot errors.

What software did you use to make it?

Couple of small issues:

I wouldn't bother with the 'folded paper' effect. It doesn't look good and it makes you think of it as being an in-universe object, which the runs into issues of it having way more realistic looking coastlines than real medieval maps (and if it's meant to be more advanced than that, the mountains would look wrong), obviously being printed with a variable size typeface, etc.

I don't love the typeface. It's hard to read, but doesn't add much in the way of flavour. A boring serif like Times new Roman, Garamond or something would be fine. If you want it to look old-school, use a blackletter or script typeface.

Seems to me like there should be some sea-ice in the north, but again, I know fuck-all about geography.

So...North America?

He used inkarnate, which has a fixed scale and space you can use, so user copy and pasted several maps together, there's where the folded paper effect comes from. It's not deliberate, just necessary.

Type face, terrain palette and everything is not upon for choice.

But user did a good job with the coastline.

Those are pieced together from Inkarnate, which is why you get the folded look. It also doesn't have any really excellent fonts, OP's probably used the best one of them

Game takes place in a low magic, early 1800s technology world, specifically on the 'new world', disputed by old world powers.

>the rivers actually converge, complete with actual tributaries

what's you use to make that? Looks beautiful

Damn user, this shit is tight

Photoshop. Used google images to get a parchment texture for background. The sea and land I used different textures with layers, added a stroke effect to make that black line around the coastline, and a few grunge brushes I downloaded for free to give it the aged look.

The gnomes made a massive free range zoo that incorporates biomes from across the known world.

Western Emea, part of the continent of Emea

Roughly the size of three Great Britains stacked together, updated version of map has it between Latitude 51 and 59 and spans 16 degrees of longitude from western Arderian Isles to Crowich

That's just Dragon Age's map...

literally this

lmao right down to the inland bodies of water

Great map but the Thunderstorm Teeth sounds absolutely retarded

I'm inclined to agree with this user, just name them Thunder's Teeth or some shit.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking for this map of these islands floating in clouds, and the image went on to show the layers heading down from the uppermost. It really got me thinking about running a game in a similar setting, but I didn't think to save it when I saw it a few days ago on Veeky Forums.

Good map but I gotta ask, why is the left third of the map there when there's nothing in it?

Do you have this map without any placenames?

Sadly I have no maps to contribute at this time, but I have some interesting places you could put on a map. The placements are how I placed them on my world.

Fog Island - South sub-polar seas, fog island gets its name because it has a magma reserve that is about 12 times bigger than the island a short distance below it, and cracks sea-water travels through spew out mist hundreds of times per day due to the magma lake. The island is barren and has no native plant or animal life.

Resignation Island - North sub-polar sea, consists of a very small above water islet called Lighthouse Rock and a not that much bigger barren island that is the main island. The island's highest point is Mount Foolscap, a mountain with visible areas of pyrite in the peak so it looks like it contains gold. The initial discoverers went through arctic hell to get off alive and the captain lost both his legs.

The dissipation isles - south-western sea, six islands that were once one big island before a volcano caused several areas of the island to sink. Inhabitable, but presently no civilization there.

Burial Island - western equatorial region, Used as a marooning ground and later a burial ground for those who died during voyages, Authorities estimate that there are 7 to 9 bodies or pieces of bodies per each 1 foot of the island, and it is by far one of the most haunted places in the world. Visitors report seeing ghosts in broad daylight, hearing laughing, crying and gibbering, and strange accidents that can't really be explained.

Hode's Island - North sub-polar seas, used for generations as the 'burial ground' for decommisioned arctic whaling ships, the island has two bays where ships are scuttled, the bay of sorrow (manned scuttling), and the bay of teath (unmanned scuttling). The island has grown 16 feet in height and width since the practice of scuttling ships began there.

would anyone be willing to make a map on request?
I'm afraid I am not very good at it

Sure. But you’ll have to give me a rough idea/outline.

levodoom is autistic

Cool.

I'd like a kind of snaking continent, since the world is made from a biggas dead dragon, with a bunch of islands to the south (called the claws).
Some big nice praries to the west, humid mountains to the east and a nice strait or ocean in the middle for Not!Constantinople.
Oh and two points to the north that is close enough to the north pole that during winter ice bridges are sometimes formed.

Can you work with that? Any effort is greatly appriciated

Continuing on.

Saw Island - very far north, named because it is a permanent settlement island with three whaling camps, Butchery Bay, Bone Hall, and Riches Ridge, all three of which are small (less than 200 people) towns.

Crown Islands - A large circular atoll with 9 islands on it and 4 settlements of less than 50 people each. The crown islands began as a site of transportation (i.e. long-term exile sentences), but became central to spice, perfume, and exotic wood trade over time, and is now a small but well sorted out colony.

Chawblock island - So called because it resembles a large square of hard tack and is a rough, uneven mass with scattered trees and bushes, as well as several small mountains. Sub-tropical equatorial.

Wladim island - Known as the 'claw of the sea', Wladim island has the distinction of being the least flat area in the world, with less than 1 foot of flat ground on the whole island, which is about 16 miles long and about 6 wide. South pole.

>Ziraq
>Sykria

Ruled by Skassam Huskein and Bazzar Al-Askad, respectively?

Islands-user here, should I continue on? I do have some more islands (about 10 more), but I don't want to clog up the thread, since I don't have any actual maps to post.

I traced over it. I'm not good with realistic coastlines.

Inkarnate version of the map from a campaign I played in last year. The GM gave us his simple one but I wanted to play with Inkarnate and embellish with photoshop, this is the result.

How come theres major cities next to full fledged old growth forest? I would think only towns have forest around them while cities consumed them.

And this is the version I made in photoshop alone. My friend said he preferred this version, I'm not sure.

Ah well.. the 'bramble' is like a weird evil elven forest, and Saloria is more like a small town (it's just important to the campaign so it's on the map.) Tezef is supposed to be in a forest and they make ships or something with the lumber. The rest of the world is basically farmland, though I tried to give it some variance on the map.

Here's a version another player was working on but never finished. Could have been badass...

Even more islands.

Board Island - So named because a board bearing the name 'Maria Celestia' was found on the coast by the initial discoverers. The ship the board came from was never discovered. Uninhabited because it is less than 10 miles from a kraken breeding ground. Located sub-equatorial, eastern sea.

The Dismay Islands - Sub-polar south seas, 11 rocky islands, 5 of which are stable enough that they have some plants and animals, the remainder of which are simply big rocks entirely devoid of life. So called because the shallow shoals between them and their position makes a large semi-whirlpool tide on one side of the island chain.

Enterprise Island - So called because it was bought sight unseen by colonists for money. A small but stable colony is located on the island, the highest point on the island is Mt Peacock, which has large but difficult to access visible gemstones on its exterior.

Thorpe's Island - By far the biggest island on the list, Thorpe's island is about 119 miles long and ranges from 2 miles to 26 miles wide. Thorpe's island is inhabited by extremely hostile indiginous tribespeople who discourge any form of contact with the outside world by attacking without mercy any time anyone tries to land on the island. They are at stone tools / grass attire stage. Tropical equatorial island.

Still a WIP

You guys have cool maps and I just have

Is the world more brightly lit the higher the altitude is?

I think so. I'm playing in a Dwarf Fortress world, so this is the game's map.

Here's the one for my setting, still debating some of the location names though.

I know which one you’re talking about, but I also don’t have it. Bump for you.

Just some random tooling around in Inkarnate.

Some of the things I see from other people using this program put my works with it to shame, but whatever.

While they could work on any map that has enough water space in it, I was actually making this for you, I'm sorry I didn't say that at first, I thought it was obvious. I made these because I saw your map had a lot of water on it.

Sorry, had to clear up some school work.

I’ll see what I can do, though it might take a bit.

Looks good but you gotta work on your naming dude

Ashkash sounds like a small town in Wisconsin.

The game mostly takes place in an alternate timeline where Philip the Bold manages to survives the Battle of Nancy, as a result creating a large European state that will later be overtaken by Wallons and renamed to "Wallonia." Currently the world is going through World War IV, although, in terms of tech levle, it's closer to our reality's Interwar tech with a few fields being farther ahead (there's a limited form of Internet that is based nation-by-nation and basically connects computers in cafès to the ones in private companies offices and the homes of the upper middle class; smallpox and measles have been eradicated) and others where the technology is furhter behind (cars are being mass-produced, but are little more than reinforced Model T s; air travel is still in infancy) than our Thirties' tech.

In terms of culture, the previous World Wars were a rapid and relatively painless affair that managed to get most people supportive of war, if anything else because the idea of "war as world's only sanitary practice" is sincerely believed by night-everyone but the Vagueists (basically, a mix between the Impressionists' art style and Dadaists' pacifism) and some Hallerist (an ideology preaching the peaceful separation between the human races, basically non-violent nationalsocialists) fringes.

Here how it would look in-universe (albeit without labels, as I'm incompetent at labeling small things).

>Inkarnate

every thread until this user comes back from the dead

What is that? A triceratops?

...

Okay, let's break this down.

>snaking continent, since the world is made from a biggas dead dragon, with a bunch of islands to the south (called the claws).
Okay, so a little like Central America?
>Some big nice praries to the west, humid mountains to the east and a nice strait or ocean in the middle for Not!Constantinople.
So a little like North America if South America sank into the ocean?

Better question: Which way does the continent "snake"?

Shit, what HAPPENED?!

Still very much a work in progress, how am I looking thus far? Any stuff that needs to change?

The biggest problem here is that there isn't a clear border/borders between the two warring partys

Each square is 25mi by 25mi, for reference

pretty good although its hard to make out what some of the names on there are attached to like Alaur and Yaathesera (i cant tell if they're countries of the city's closest to them)

>putting in the countries/city's? flags without providing their names
>not drawing or giving any indication on the counties/city states borders
>putting the fucking word north on the compass instead of just the letter N

1.Still working on names for the countries and cities
2.Drawing borders will come after I'm done in Inkarnate
3.Fair point

Is there some utility that creates a map like this?

What happened?

...

How the hell do you make these? Are there tutorials or something?

Go here: inkarnate.com/
It's pretty easy to pick up and use, but once you get used to it, you can use it for some pretty cool stuff. Definitely isn't the end-all be-all of map makers though, just a widely used one.

Yeah I've tried that but I didn't like the limitations.
What about the ones not made in inkarnate?

and are both photoshop, is from a videogame and is a slightly touched up version of that same map.

That's it, thanks a lot man.

I made So here's my folder of map making resources, which I honestly should have posted earlier sorry.

drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzS5fqP5rugETE9aX0dCY0Z2Y1E

There are tutorials and brushes and other application resources. You do need to know how to use Photoshop. There should be a good tutorial in there on rendering clouds and sharpening it into these black and white shapes, then you cut them up to form coasts quickly. There's a few methods you can use but that's the main way to save time.

You can also try campaign cartographer. It costs money though. Inkarnate is good for a quick bit good looking map, though I recommend figuring things out in Photoshop (or gimp..) first to get your layout. You can't drag things in inkarnate. In Photoshop you can put things on layers and figure out placement before going ham on the actual appearance of it.

So uh.. 1- figure out where stuff goes 2- draw it.

You could look for 'how to draw fantasy maps' on Amazon. The book is by the guy who did the maps for d&d 5e's Dragon queen adventure. It's really great, and I met him at gencon and he was nice if that counts for anything. The book is mostly about regional maps but there's a little about city maps and heraldry which is cool.

Is there a tutorial Veeky Forums can recommend for the photoshop ones?

Thanks m8.

>though I recommend figuring things out in Photoshop (or gimp..)
I have no money so Gimp it is. Will your resources work for gimp?

Is there an active mapping program somewhere that makes clouds and currents move over maps you make?

Some will, like paper textures are just jpgs I believe, but brushes might not. Maybe you can convert them or force it? Not sure, sorry. But you can probably find more by searching on deviant art. Go to resources, application resources, there should be a category for gimp? Then type map and see what pops up. Might save some trouble.

Please look one post above yours.

The only map you'll ever need.

Did some dumbshit piss off Tiamat?

Someone posted this to the inkarnate sub Reddit today. It's really cool what can be done with the pro stuff and a ton of effort. I feel like inkarnate is best when used on this smaller scale

I've always liked this one.

My fucking nigger. What system are you using, FATE?

Thoughts on this map?
Overdone?

The idea was to map out a Confederacy of tribes and small kingdoms.

>can't unsee it
fuq u

>Overdone?
no such thing, with the exception of the east being kinda barren it looks perfect

rate my WIP.

Any advice for making it look more interesting?

Looks like pretty bad desu.

Add more detail around the shorelines. Look at google earth for some inspiration.
Also think about adding some stretchier islands. They're not all round blobs in the ocean.
You might want to revise your borders. Think about why the countries have borders there. Do they follow rivers? Mountains? If there were any treaties in the past why not add some straight lines in there?
And then of course you need some rivers, lakes, estuaries, marshlands, deltas, etc. Think about where the major civilization are, then add major rivers through the middle of them.
Finally, think a little bit about the ice caps. Where's the sea ice?

TL;DR Could turn out pretty good, but needs way more detail.

did you spend more than 2 minutes on this?

Posted this a couple days ago, didn't really get any feedback.

This was my first map, I'm working on my second now, and I'm really looking for things to improve on.

>Feedback ?

your map is a joke, right?

Sorry, wad asleep.
Yes and yes, as for snaking i was thinking like, an S lying down. Kinda.
But you know, ignore the snaking if it grts in your way.

reposting my map with no changes except global map insert placed via mspaint because i'm away from my files

it's a few hundred years after colonization and introduction of terrestrial life started, but outside the populated area it remains mostly rocks and tundra

there is native life and a somewhat breathable level of oxygen already present due to that, but it's more on the level of fungi and algae than any animals or complex plants
there used to be more complex life, but almost all of it died when shit froze over completely and stayed that way until beginning to thaw relatively recently

shits haunted yo, spirits are pissed about terraforming because it will prevent new organisms they can inhabit from developing
spirits and biological life develop together, and a spirit trying to inhabit an organism that was developed by/with a different group of spirits and a different spirit attachment protocol does not end well for either party

Man I am way out of my fucking league itt, but still I'm happy with this goddamn thing so I'll stick with it.

>That random mishmash of made up and English words
This triggers my autism.

Negative. I'm not currently running it, but I would like to. Right now a friend is running a SW game.

oops missed something

Somewhat group-developed horror-themed game. Eldtrich shit is creeping out of the castle, causing all sorts of shenanigans for everyone nearby.
