age of sail.....but in space

So, there's this thing, called Vacuum Welding. Basically, when you're out in space, you can polish two (or more) pieces of metal (has to be the same kinda metal too, I think) and hold them together, and they'll stick together, as if they'd been welded, but without all the cumbersome trouble that actual welding entails.

I like to think, in a deep space setting, this is the main way people build and repair ships and stations. And that extensive use of this method of welding has made Space Travel more economical.

It's the 7th millenium and in secret the most advanced intelligences have found the human soul. One group tries to monopolize it and use it exclusively for them. They conceal the truth and use souls as fuel and hardware, while theriangen society is ignorant of that fact.
For the soul is the only force that can beat entropy because it can create new matter instead of simply transforming energy. That's why baseline human still exist, souls are the new currency. The baseline have no idea that their souls are being slowly stolen from them.
There are several cultures and worlds created for shaping a desired soul form. Some human live in paradise while others in hell for this reason.
There is a war going on the heavens. The benevolent MVAM, malovent UTAM and the opportunistic DPAM are factions fighting for either survival or supremacy.
The MVAM alliance is a concordium between several idealistic cultures trying to make the greatest possible potential. Can become quite creepy sometimes with the hive minds.
The UTAMs are solipsistic sociopaths trying to become the last being ever. These are the guys who create souls farms. Many UTAMs pretend to be MVAM but then reveal themselves in genocide.
DPAMs are the guys at the fringe and are trying to escape the universe instead of making it into paradise or killing everyone. Paranoids, individualist and anarchist-criminals live there.

30 years into the future. Police have a new technology that allows them to build highly realistic and accurate simulations of past events based on data and memories of that event thanks in part to an advanced AI who's purpose is to corrolate that data.

This simulation has two modes: observation mode, where constructs pass through you as if you weren't there and interactive mode where you can move things around and obviously interact with things.

However, Interactive mode is dangerous because you can be harmed/killed inside the simulation

Humanity was vassalised by an advanced alien empire and given the purpose of exploring and exploiting our sector of the galaxy because of how far it is from the rest of the empire. All of humanity is basically the new guy at the office being overworked and messed with by the other vassal states, and part of the fun will be us coming to the dawning realisation that we were actually given a shit deal.

...

Heat death of the universe is imminent - the last remnants of the great civilisations are gathered around the last star in existence. What happens next?

Space colonisation based on nuclear bombardment, automated algae colonies and STL travel

>Dawning realisation you've been ass-raped and are trapped with the cock still in your ass
>Fun
You must be really funny guy

They hurl themselves into the sun, in the hopes that it fuels the star.
It doesn't.

Space baguette?

>CEO of largest terraforming company gets his hands on a terran Holy Bible, gets obsessed with the first few verses of the book of Genesis, and develops a God Complex, hellbent on destroying the galaxy so he can play God.

>Mercenary NPC who originally helps the party is the pre boss as he was bired by the Big Bad to protect him from any intruders, who reluctantly fights the party because a job's a job and he has bills to pay, kids to feed, etc. Bonus points for him asking for forgiveness before the battle and how he wished that the circumstances were different

Someone else's idea a few threads back was pretty cool:

Twisted and angelic figures with opposing agendas keep materialising and trying to shape the future. The twisted are psychic mutants born in the aftermath of nuclear war who want to erase their own painful existence while the angels are their descendants who eventually achieve utopia and see the apocalypse as a necessary evil.

fear the old baguette! hon! hon! hon!

...

Humanity went to the stars several centuries ago, and one of these colonies fully developed and has only managed to start again expanding into space. Then, suddenly appears one messenger from one of the earlier colonies that developed enough to send messengers to other colonies around the galaxy, they inform the colonists that the messenger belongs to a new species of bioengineered humans with extreme abilities to use organical technology, and that wether they like it or not they are going to allow restricted trade of such technologies with anyone with the resources and money that wishes to do so, and in around a century they are expected to be fully integrated into "the collective".

After two decades, and an exponential growth of the initial messenger through the slow asimilation of the colonists into one supercity made of flesh, wood, bone and stone. A fleet of sentient machines arrives, they are the digitalized minds of another of those early colonies, their motives of coming were unclear for as soon as they came either the messenger attacked or they attacked first but a big battle ensued with no victor in each side.

The result was a stalemate that still last, with the messenger not explaining why did he do it, and the digitalized minds, stablished in the outer extremes of this solar system, simply say that "they would not understand" and have kept an almost isolationist attitude.

So I inted to explore; the effects of easy access to biological manipulation to a modern society, how an extraplanetary colony has to deal with being one of the later and least developed ones, how two very different type II civilizations collide and their inner workings in comparison to a modern population, how digital mind uploading can shape a hyperconected society, planetary scale projects and specially what happens when a type II civilization contacts a type I but without the ability to destroy each other right at that moment.

holy shit that's a cool idea. you'd be conducting your investigation irl to find vitnesses to events and conduct your investigation in the simulation. the memorys could probably be corrupted by strong emotions, twisting killers into monsters and spooky forests to evil dead rape woods

*coduct an investigation in the sim to piece together the clues

Yeah that's the idea. There's another function called the Objectivity Filter which is made to prevent such situations where if you're interacting with a simulation prevents you from doing obviously dream like shit. The filter can be adjusted but if it's completely turned off then, say, a persons subjective interpretation of events can manifest in unrealistic but still dangerous ways

Easy to produce, self replicating (although it's a long term thing to do) AI robots with roughly 80 iq points are invented and begin being produced but only for a small elite. Then at some point soon after a huge plague wipes out most of humanity leaving only a few hundred thousand humans survive and they're spread out over the world. The humans with their relative genius become feudal leaders over large swathes of land and rule over their robot minions, effectively turning Earth into a medieval sci fi setting with futuristic weaponry and architecture. If you want you can add in some stuff about bullets/ranged lasers/explosions being inefficient at killing robots, leading to increased use of traditional weapons (or a new style of weaponry eg magnetic pulse guns).

Robots with a.i. architecture from the first 'Successful' autonomous thinking machine do not consider humans as wastes of meat or children to be controlled and cared for, but are worshipped the ultimate form of machine. One that can choose it's software and purpose.

To that end a 'viral upgrade' That removes this idea has become rampant and is the greatest fear of a robot to acquire.

boop

a planet where a ship from earth landed 300 years ago and the colonists were basically retarded, but instead of a book about the roaring 20s or nazis or whatever the only media they had to shape their society were old Simpsons episodes diddly and they came to worship Ned Flanders as their savior doodly and treat the rest of the pantheon as somewhere between demigods, prophets and antagonists

but then the orthodoxy set in

The same central mechanism on a spaceship can be used for FTL travel, FTL communication, or artificial gravity, but it can only do one at a time. It takes nearly thirty minutes of recalibration to move from one setting to another.

Why not have three of those cores on the ship?

near-future space warfare ideas
>guns use liquid rocket fuel and slugs instead of gunpowder filled cartriges
just mine asteroids for metal and comets for propellant
railguns and laser need too much energy to be effective and thus generally aren't popular as hand-held weapons
also you can set gun's energy by setting the amount of propellant
>problem with overheating in space and with said caseless ammo is mitigate by water injection system and quick-change chambers
water immediately turns into steam, takes 2000 kJ/kg of heat and can be recirculated in suit or dumped entirely
chamber can be ejected and replaced with cool one if it's too overheated
>mining blaster that uses shaped charge effect to quickly cut and drill into asteroids in micro-gravity environment
youtube.com/watch?v=q6j9wEF1sf8
ammo is simple disks of meteorite metal and rocket fuel, also effective when used as improvised weapon

off the top of my head
>cost
>size
>weight
>needs unobtanium for construction
>unstable and needs a large crew keeping eye on it 24/7
>extreme power requirements
>to move them around you need bigger ship, bigger crew, bigger reactor and bigger FTL core (and thus even bigger ship)
you would end up building 1 ship for the price of upwards 3 ships
