I plan on making an infiltrator for my next game. Probably gonna go adept, master of disguise/bullshitting. Any tips?

For context we're also students at an all-girl's private school in the Shadowrunning club. Yes, our GM stole the idea from here.

Let's get down to brass tacks.
How often can I get my sex, race, and identity changed while still maintaining enough money to continue running?
I figure if I get in the habit of hitting the randomizer on what exactly my character is that month, then he's going to be effectively invisible when he needs to be.

Why do people sometimes think 1 in a stat means you are disabled in that stat, when there are actual qualities to represent disability?
Are they just bad at reading the rules or something?

see
when people say "LOG 1 means being retarded", they don't mean "it means having a disability that prevents you from learning", they mean "A person with LOG 1 is a brainlet"

Because nobody can agree on terminology.

>not being retarded in a medical sense, just has a room temperature celcius IQ
I think the people calling it retarded don't really know what the words they are saying mean.

Do drones come with a built-in pilot program? For reference I'm playing 5e and I'm making a Sniper/infiltrator character. Part of the concept is I bought 3 drones and a cheap RCC, figuring I'd cram the drones full of stealth and sensor upgrades and set them to be my sniper's spotters.

Do I need to buy Pilot programs for the drones if I want them to:
a) use autosofts (specifically stealth and evasion ones)
b) be able to hover in place or patrol along a manually-set route

The specific drones are two Horizon CU3s and a Lockheed Optic x2

They should come with a rating 3 pilot program by default I think.

chummer, the "room temperature IQ" is hyperbole
mostly the difference is that the medical condition affects (and possibly prevents) future advancement in that area, while just having it be low doesn't
>don't really know what the words they are saying mean.
eh, for most purposes it works. When you hear someone being called a retard, do you instantly assume that he has a learning disability? Or just that he isn't that smart?
And it being understood is the only thing determining what a word means, you autist

Is that true of all drones? Because the Lockheed has a Pilot rating of 4 and I took the 'professional'
upgrade for the CU3s which says "increases pilot rating to 4" but doesn't say anything about a Pilot program

>mostly the difference is that the medical condition affects (and possibly prevents) future advancement in that area
Not him, but intellectual disability (also called mental retardation or abbreviated as MR by experts) involves an IQ less than 70 and "two or more adaptive behaviors that affect everyday, general living".

But yeah most people don't get this stuff.

having low IQ is literally a disability.
Don't hyperbole yourself into saying an entirely different thing.

And when I hear someone say that someone doesn't have a mental disability, they just have room temperature IQ, I'm going to laugh at their shit and never let them live down that they thought this way.
Even if they say it was a joke or hyperbole.
ESPECIALLY if they say it was a joke or hyperbole.
That's how you really get to people.

>intellectual disability (also called mental retardation or abbreviated as MR by experts)
sure
but that isn't the definition used by the layman

It's like the word "Theory"
>Scientific Definition: A framework of tested hypotheses' that explains a fact or area of Science. E.g. Atomic theory, Theory of Evolution, Theory of Gravity
>Layman Definition: A guess.

>I'm going to laugh at their shit and never let them live down that they thought this way.
Okay

>infiltrator posts are completely ignored
I feel this is appropriate somehow

Because you cannot default on a skill you have no ranks in

I dunno, I've seen people with average log be unable to default on things.
Like computers.
I don't understand how someone can work a smart phone but can't work a computer SO HARD they don't even know how to open applications.

>you cannot default on a skill you have no ranks in
This is not correct

Defaulting as defined by the 5e quickstart rulebook:
>If the character lacks the appropriate skill for
the test, she can still attempt the action, but will
find it harder to succeed. Improvising in this
manner is called defaulting. Characters who
default use only the linked attribute in their
dice pool. Additionally, they suffer a –1 dice
pool modifier.

The entire purpose of the mechanic is to be able to use skills you don't have ranks in

This might seem like a weird question but when exactly should you roll initiative? If someone wants to fire on an unaware target do they always roll initiative before the the shot is taken?

I wanted to mess with my group's adept and maybe wing him/mess up his place a little by having an escaped goon from a previous run come back and try to blast him through the door of his shitty squat. But if i have him roll initiative as soon as the goon wants to blast the door down A) He'll know something's up and B) He'll be faster than the goon because he has Improved Reflexes 3. So does he just go into initiative to answer the door then blast when he sees this ganger that beat feet yesterday leveling a shotgun at him? He has a contact that occasionally sends in-person messengers to his place so i want to mess with his combat senses/motion detection by having him know a person is at his door, but not what that person is up to out there.

Also interested in ways to make Improved Reflexes narratively interesting. Is it like living with your wired reflexes turned on 24/7? Is there a chance he'll light up his grandma if she comes up the stairs without announcing herself some day?

No, he's not going to light up grandma.
That's one of the reasons adepts and magic are so popular.

I think he means, "If you have an Attribute at 1 and try to default your dice pool is 0, thus making you fail"

>If someone wants to fire on an unaware target do they always roll initiative before the the shot is taken?
Does the target have anything that would allow them to make a test to see the attacker? E.g. Radar, Ultrasound, Combat Sense, etc.
If no, they don't get an initiative roll beforehand. The attacker shoots, then initiative is rolled.
If yes, they may try to see the attacker. If they succeed they may roll initiative.

In your case I'd ask yourself if he has any reason to suspect an attack. This can be
>wrong time
>wrong signal (knocked twice but should have knocked thrice and then lightly kicked the door once)
>missing signal (didn't send a message)
>other things

if there aren't, then he'll just be surprised and won't get the first IP. Depending on how badly you want to see him hurt, make it more or less obvious

Fuck, GMing again for the first time in about a month. Hopefully I don't disappoint my players, even though I'm not really super prepared

Probably once per month, but you should know this already Plan9.

Unless otherwise stated, drones are considered to have a Pilot rating equal to their Device rating. This is almost always 3 (unless noted otherwise).

Thanks for the rundown. The character was made to be flamboyant so i want that to affect his work as a runner, but would rather present him challenges than just punch holes in him. I'll drop some hints before i open fire and let the player decide how paranoid he wants to be. Having to dispose of a body first thing in his day will probably set him back more than getting shot, honestly.

Don't worry BP, I'm sure you'll do great.

So after getting some suggestions I did some changes to the character I posted last thread.
Any other recommendations.

>Because you cannot default on a skill you have no ranks in

Defaulting literally means rolling on a skill you don't have ranks in you absolute dumbass.

He must have a low LOG.

There are surprise rules in the book, but the best part is this:
No defence roll. Which means every succes is a bonus to the damage rating.

So say you get to roll 18 dice with your shitty little streetline special.

That makes a streetline special 12P

Watch out for vehicles.
>captcha is the vehicles one
spooky

Will lowering availability at chargen just make magic a much better option?

Yes.

Quite a lot of good ware and equipment is teetering on the availability edge as is.

Give me literally one reason not to take the ultimax rainforest carbine.
Just 1.

Yes! Spells/Spirits/Adept Powers don't have availability ratings, so they will be even more powerful by comparison.
Making Availability ratings for those things might be a good project, if you can find a methodology that makes sense.

The version in the book is not the currently correct one.

No one reads the mission books.

Better tell that lonesome liar, tell that midnight rider. Tell that gambler, the rambler, the backslider. God'll cut them down.

It's "long tongue liar" and "backbiter"

Backbiting refers to talking about people, spreading negative rumors behind their backs.

Also,
>Go and tell that long tongue liar
>Go and tell that midnight rider
>Tell the rambler
>The gambler
>The backbiter
>Tell em that god's gonna cut 'em down.

Chameleon adepts are really fun and versatile. Just don't forget to pick up astral perception and assensing to help you steer clear of those that could see through your disguise.

All right so a friend of mine wants to build a troll decker/street sam and he's wanting to chrome up. I've never actually looked in to it before, but it seems like cyberware is fucking GARBAGE for limbs. Is there any reason it's there other than you actually just lost that body part mid-game?

4th edition btw

Not particularly. Even then it's dubious if you can get a cloned replacement instead.

Fuck is it in the book for then? I mean, Wired Reflexes maybe, but you may as well go adept. Just find it confusing as to why they made it so useless.

CGL gonna CGL, user. I know it's in Chrome Flesh don't have my 4e shit on hand to check which one has it.

>Tfw trying to find use for cyber

Attached: tenor.gif (264x320, 1.79M)

Your post is bad.

Hand of godding is always fun, and can give you a quite frankly ridiculous amount of dice to throw at a combat encounter.

Also you can load a LOT of shit into a cyberarm.

There's more wire than just arms and wired reflexes man.

If you can't find a use for cyber you're fucking clinically retarded.

Do Nocturna like being petted?

Are there any ways in which 5e is better than 4e?
I'm trying to figure out whether to play 5e or 4e, and I'm just not seeing a lot of good talk about 5e.

They are both similar enough to each other that to compare them would be a matter of tastes. And both have fucked up stuff that is unique to their editions. Fourth edition probably has the superior editing, but fifth edition is newer and probably has more players and support.

And 3E?

Is completely different.

Yes, but is it better than 4E and 5E?

Its a beast of its own. Its also where the "bathtub full of d6" meme came from. It's system is clunky and the issues that later editions deal with are still present here, but have not been streamlined or polished. I honestly wouldn't recommend it over 4th or 5th ed. It has a lot of good sourcebooks if you want to read up on particular areas of interest in the Sixth World, but keep in mind that its about twenty-something years out of date for the current lore of the game so lots of stuff will have changed.

So basically, there is no "great" way to play Shadowrun with Shadowrun, only a bunch of flawed and decent-ish ways?

>Its also where the "bathtub full of d6" meme came from.
Wouldn't it tend towards fewer dice, being stat or skill, not stat+skill?

More players and it being newer is not really too relevant to my personal use.

The issue is the quality of the ruleset and the books.

Pretty much. SR has never had great rules.

No, it would not.

There were builds that rolled over a hundred dice.

Honestly, at this point just using the old meta narrative is probably better than the miserable shitshow that is CGL's version of the Sixth World. Shadowrun at its purist and arguably at its heydey before the started tossing in a thousand different way for there to be mind-controlled zombies, fucked up magic being interesting with UMT, and and yanked it out of the 80's with wireless.

>There were builds that rolled over a hundred dice.
I don't think I believe you.

Shadowrun is a labor of love for most players. It is not easy (which scares a lot of people away who aren't prepared for the crunch), but it can be satisfying all the same.

Why would I lie about this?

You could stack bonus on bonus on bonus on bonus and things got ridiculous.

Your belief is not required, user. Such things are no secrets.

Attached: 1517365327684.png (707x1000, 654K)

Yeah. My group's even stopped using Shadowrun, and we've been using various other games to get our fix without dealing with the shitshow. We also do like was talking about and play in 2039, as well. Sprawl was pretty decent, though it seems like the Shadowrun splat ain't coming anytime soon and we handled that with some homebrewed playbooks. And now we've giving Blades in the Dark a try, and loving the shit out of it. And there's even a nicely made homebrew for Shadowrun. Runners in the Shadows, creatively enough.

We're not even narrative gamers, most of us generally prefer crunchy games. But CGL is just unironically an evil corp, and the game and the fluff have gotten so shitty we took drastic measures.
>drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwzNN7yL3u8NdjBhX1Zzdlhfd3M

>Blades in the Dark
>225 page professionally formatted PDF
Holy shit, I'm in love. And it's already better edited than anything CGL's put out in years.

Appears to be made by evil hat.

There was some reason I didn't like that company, but I'll be damned if I can remember.

Nah, Runners in the Shadows is a fan-made supplement. It's just a retooling of Evil Hat's Blades in the Dark. Made by some dude named Mark Cleveland Massengale. Dunno why you might hate 'em. My only experience with them was the glorious fun Don't Rest Your Head.

>You could stack bonus on bonus on bonus on bonus and things got ridiculous.
Most 3e modifiers are to target number, though.

Googling has mostly picked up quotes from SR3 players bitching about dicepool bloat in 4e+

4e ed. Cyberlimb rules are particularly bad. Especially if your'e a troll, they really only work for humans and only you commit hard.

Fuck no, anyway who tells you otherwise is a grognard and should be ignored. Shadowrun's rules have always been a dumpster 5e. WHy 5e gets shit on so much is that it clearly could have been good if CGL were halfway competent and made any effort to edit playtest or finish their mechanics before shitting it out the door and stop circlejerking with jackpointers

>WHy 5e gets shit on so much is that it clearly could have been good if CGL were halfway competent and made any effort to edit playtest or finish their mechanics before shitting it out the door and stop circlejerking with jackpointers

Well, that and it's the new edition. It's a combination of 'They could have done good things', 'latest edition' and 'Mistakes get less acceptable every time you make them'.

There's also a modicum of 'I misunderstood [thing], so it must be shit'.

in my canon their "fur" is actually black vellus hair
miss me with that furfag shit

Anyone recommend some synthwave artists with female vocalists?

Need to find some good examples for a story. Players have celeb side characters who are helping out a pop star and need some vocal synthwave tracks to use as samples of her talent.

Anyone think they can help a chummer out?

>Need to find some good examples for a story.
youtube.com/watch?v=-DSVDcw6iW8
Greta Link, Isabella Goloversic (from Memory Ghost), Hayley Stewart. All three appear on Perturbator tracks (Naked Tongues, Desire, Hard Wired, Venger, and Sentient).

Thanks user!

This looks awesome. Thanks, user!

Now I want to play an Aged, Blind, Paraplegic rigger who lives in and through his drones...
Radar?

Literally everyone I know who is edition hunting tried to enjoy 5th first.

This isn't a D&D situation where 4th and 5th were loathed by 3aboos for the wrong reason, this is a CGL are morons situation

It's a bit of cyberware that enables you to send out radar pulses to map out your immediate area. It generally provides you with a minimap of your location, but as the Blind quality means you can't process visual inputs at all, you might need to coerce your GM into allowing it to work. Can also use the Orientation System to get around.

>tfw I can't bring myself to not make social checks that aren't intimidate one dificulty higher for the tool who bought a Sleeping Tiger

It still gets the social limit mod but fuck if I'm going to ever accept 5e trying to make this garish, overpriced piece of trash actually good at facing.

>garish, overpriced piece of trash
That's SR culture, though.

That's "CGL cannot into fashion" culture. I still can't get over the fact that the Moonsilver, 8000y fucking dress, looks like a foofy HS prom dress.

Read the description for what the Ace of line pieces actually look like, its cringe as fuck.

What's the best thing to do with a Johnson that tried to backstab you but failed?

Do you
>Beat him up/kill him to send a message that your team is not to be fucked with (although this potentially might scare off any other Johnson from working with you)
>Swindle him for all he's worth and make him your bitch
>Some third option

Shop around first to see if anyone has a contract on him or his organisation. Revenge is good, but paid revenge is better.

Are skimmers dead required for melee folk?
I'm considering using celerity instead because I'm a fucker who enjoys SURGE.

Blow up his car.

Depends on what he did and why, and the general mores of the group I guess. Personally I try and avoid having Johnsons double-cross the party as much as possible, and sign-post it a bit if it's relevant to the plot.
Given the inherent limitations of melee requiring that you get close to do any damage, yeah, some form of movement multiplier is almost essential. You can ask your GM if you can have roller-skates or something if you don't want chrome.

Attached: file.png (2048x1234, 1.37M)

Threaten to tell his superiors.
The Johnson isn't supposed to deceive you per se, he's supposed to save the corp money and trouble.
If he fails at deceiving you, his superiors will want to hear it, and they might even have some more jobs for you.
After all, you were better than the guy they paid a full-time paycheck.

Well, is celerity enough do you think?
It is SOME multiplied movement.

Could get some muscle toners as well, or if you are trying to avoid losing essence, get access to the enhance attribute spell.

nah, bioware's fine.
Though I don't know if they actually allow you to use muscle toner with celerity, now that I think about it.

I don't think it's furry if literally ALL they have is fur, though. It's not like they're sentient animals, or really animalistic at all aside from the fur; they're drow with weird body hair.

What could some racial slurs be for metavariants? I'm aware of the usual ones for the main five races (breeder, stuntie/halfer, keeb/dandelion eater, trog, tusker, etc). But I'm sorta curious what more unique ones might be, aside from just using the normal insults against variants (like calling an oni a trog). And idk what they'd be for shit like sasquatch, pixies, etc. at all.

>pixie
Tinkerbell
>Night One
Furry, fuzzball
>oni
Bug-eyes

Can I get some tips for SR5E decking?
I literally know nothing about shadowrun character optimization other than playing a pregen street sam with an ares alpha that one time.

>sasquatch
This one's easy; call 'em wookies or chewbacca or something.
