I explained that I was a radio reporter and I needed to record whatever he was going to tell me for it to be useful. But he wasn't having it. He seemed unimpressed by our little radio story.
He said my colleagues and I were like fishermen, who had no idea what we were angling for. We had no focus. We were just casting blindly. Manny, I soon learned, is a man of many metaphors.
I put down my recorder. The thing you need to be paying attention to, he said, is the negotiation. The salesman is the tiger, and the customer is the deer. The tiger has to eat, and you can't eat if you don't kill that deer.
He moved his right hand up and then clamped his fingers around his own neck. You have to go for the neck, he said. But if you try to kill him too early, the deer will wake up and run away.
As the day went on, I kept trying to get Manny to let me record him, but he wouldn't. Instead he'd come up to me while I was interviewing someone else, point to his head very deliberately, presumably to his brain, give me a knowing look, and then walk away. At one point, we found ourselves facing each other at his desk.
He asked me if I had read the greatest book ever written about car sales. I don't think so, I told him. What is it? The Art of War, he said, by Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu, as you maybe know, was a military general and strategist in ancient China. The Art of War is his magnum opus, where he lays out his tactics for how to succeed in conflict. And though Sun Tzu was writing about actual war, the book has become well-known in business and sales circles.

It's a pragmatic guide to strategy and warfare written centuries ago. Almost all top level Chinese and even American military personnel have read and studied this book. I don't know why you would associate it with the fedora, who has probably never read it because it's "3500 years old"

Many successful people are known to swear by and recommend this book. I know of two off the top of my head, Bill Belichick, smartest and most successful head coach in the NFL, and Steve Bannon, evil genius who will make America white again.

the art of war is pretty much the simplest guide you can find in regards to tactics you can apply in many different areas but particularly in *surprise* war. maybe you got a flowery translation. but what i got was pretty simple.
of course with any guide on how to do anything you can interpret it autistically to some super literal and inapplicable level but many things here are pretty basic and almost obvious with others not so obvious. if you've played any kind of pvp video game and you aren't total trash you've probably applied some of what this book mentions.
as for this thread derailing into a critique of the right's obsession with strategy. while i agree that a lot of the internet right are dirty fucks who just care about winning and maintaining power and not so much about the country itself, tactics/ideas are universal and sometimes you have to be tactical. don't know why many of the left doesn't realize the nu-contrarian political hipster right are afraid of the actual left fighting back.
