There's a great bit in a lecture he gave to a bunch of students where a girl thinks she's being all lovey dovey and "in" by asking how he is so productive whilst being such a degenerate, sort of negging him in what she thinks is a respectful way, as if she thinks he is proud to be called a degenerate, and he just shuts her down completely. He asks her why she would label his choice of lifestyle as degeneracy, and when she tries to squirm back from the comment he just lays it on her even more. I read that book too, the stories of the seizures and the bladder issues and the withdrawals after surgery were brutal. I was surprised his liver apparently never just shut down, he must have had a killer metabolism there. Have you read Ralph Steadman's HST memoir? IIRC he recounts several instances of HST sucking down vodka 7s desperately one after the other just so he could get enough alcohol into his system.
Is that the book that also straight up admits Thompson became increasingly conservative in old age and couldn't reconcile his previous socialist beliefs?
