Tipping is not obligatory nor should it be compulsory. Tipping is a cancer and an insult to the good trust and respect which should exist between people in a social setting - not a hostage situation where some brat can potentially cause you illness by tampering with your food or ruin your night out because for the difficult task of walking a meal over to you they think they deserve a tremendous gratuity.

It's actually the restaurant owner who is holding you hostage. They underpay their employees with the explicit expectation that you'll pay the difference even though the true costs of the business (including the employees' need to survive) is not honestly represented in the prices they charge.

When I delivered, it was a Chinese food place, they didn't have a delivery fee, but they did pay me $1 gas money for each delivery.
That fee covers that expense, and other costs too. It probably covers the drivers wages mainly. If they didn't deliver they wouldn't hire them.

We have a restaurant here, pretty nice, nothing too fancy but better than chain restaurants.
You walk in and grab a menu, order at the counter, they give you a cup to fill up your own drink, and buzzer to get your own food when its ready. Literally the only human you interact with, is the girl taking your order.
Big ole tip line on the recipe sends me over the edge, the food is really good, but I don't go back there because of that alone. I don't even tip when I did go, but the I won't give them business.
