They have no sense of community because the nuclear family destroyed it. Now, their income inequality mirrors 19th century Europe, their wealth inequality mirrors 1950s Russia, and their country is being run by lawless elites that railroaded everyone under them in a box. Impossible to build a community in that. Only way to fight is symbolically, hence the democrat party becoming the party of symbolic virtue, and the republicans becoming the symbolic party of patriotism.
