ITT: Biographies

Anyone had a crack at Ron Chernow's Ulysses S. Grant biography?

Pic related was surprisingly gripping.

Is it an actual biography though or incessant "HE WUZ DA GREYTEST" late capitalist cockslobbering?

Shit I'm so fucking interested in this. Caro wrote pretty glowingly of Chernow and I'm hugely interested in Grant. His autobiography is one of my favorites.

Bumping if anyone's read it.

...

Goldsworthy is always worth a read

well no because chernow is not a historian and he writes semi accurate hagiography.

christ no

Certainly one of the best I've read. Burton was the tits.

I haven't, and don't intend to. Chernow's "Hamilton" - which I read pre Lin Manuel Miranda - was underwhelming to be quite honest. He is a better journalist/periodical contributor (at which he is good) than he is a biographer (at which he is essentially a second-rate McCullough, and McCullough isn't exactly setting the world on fire himself).

Besides, I prefer a drunken Grant anyways.

This seems like a good read after SPQR by Mary beard. . What do you think

Go for it.

Chernow's biography on Hamilton had no business being 800+ pages long. His book on Washington was very well done IMO, but writing an interesting book on Washington is much easier considering how much he accomplished during his life.

I reaad the biography of Grant by Ronald White and it was quite good. It's also probably much shorter and well written than Chernow.

Except that SPQR by Mary beard is an awful read.

Except that it's not and you're a racist FUCK

Go back to /pol/ yourself, you fuckwad.

Not good. Overlays a modern social construct onto a subject it's frankly not relevent to.

J.F.C Fuller is a much better biographer

...

This actually good? I aw it came out the other day and I wa wondering about it.

Is this a joke?

Yeah, this is a good one. Picked it up for about $3 at a used shop back when reading the 2vol Dover edition of his two most famous journeys. Not easy reading, but worth the time.

Good-bye to all That however is fine.
