>Be a polymath and student undergraduate at Harvard University, the most respected higher education institution in the world
>Have little cousin going to state school
>"user, I'm gonna be a writer!"
>I'm no aristocrat, but I also don't believe in the feeding the delusions of the, err, 'lower orders'
>"Well, you know, all the best writers went to Ivy League and Oxbridge. Not to be mean, but if you really had the potential to be a talented writer, you wouldn't be at the University of Alabama."
He thinks I'm a dick now. Really, it's hard to be on top. I can't talk about things I enjoy (continental philosophy, theoretical physics, modernist poetry) outside the purlieus of my university, because common people simply aren't operating on the same level. They have sex with one woman, and then, after a dull adolescence and a dreary young adulthood, they get married and never have fun again. How am I supposed to connect with people who aren't on my level?

Harper Lee went to Alabama University and didn't even graduate. Not that I'm saying To Kill A Mockingbird is a masterpiece

Kill yourself.

>people who aren't on my level
your level is much much lower than you think modernist

i harbor some aristocratic delusions, but even i don't fuck with this, OP, very dumb. I don't think the Ivy leagues are even the best writing schools. Denis Johnson went to the Iowa Writer's workshop, that's probably the best grad school for writing. You're a dumbass. "polymath" ok good luck ever getting laid and writing your anachronistic pseudo-masterpiece

See? I'm always met with this primitive resentment. Why are proles so jealous of my position? I'm not even joking. I think it's absurd for proles to believe that they deserve enjoy the things I enjoy (encountering the sublime on a daily basis, hedonistic parties, exploring my beautiful mind with LSD). Just sit back, read your James Patterson, and let me explain things to you.

whats most worrying here are not pseudo aristocratic tendencies, but you seeking meaningless sexual relations instead of seeking to start a family

ban every fucking newfag faggot that is taking this blatant bait

>not to be aristocratic, but I'm gonna be exceedingly aristocratic
And Ezra Pound went to a no-name school in the middle of nowhere

Sorry, but Ezra Pound was NOT a good poet.

You sound like Quentin after discovering continental philosophy, but at least I mean it as a 50% insult / 50% compliment.

To be fair, it has become noticeably harder to discern genuine cunts from bait over the last few years.

Thank you for apologizing

>he conflates academic success with actual merit
my sides
how fragile is your ego that you need to prop it up with the institutional equivalent of congratulatory shiny stickers and magnets for the fridge

pro tip user people who don't attend or qualify for the ivy league likely have other priorities and values in life, there's nothing inherently superior about you, in fact it's a lack of imagination that allows you 'forward'

I was not being sincere. I say "sorry" for the purpose of propriety.

Oh wow, so the problem is being a pseud with no actual taste, but thinking you're a genius because you get good grades. My bad.

You sound like a fucking douche and judging by your post i'd actually prefer to read your friends opportunistic literature than your sad conservative lame literature sprinkled with vaguely intellectual bullshit.

>But when you think about what it means to have gone to an elite college, how could this be true? We're talking about a decision made by admissions officers—basically, HR people—based on a cursory examination of a huge pile of depressingly similar applications submitted by seventeen year olds. And what do they have to go on? An easily gamed standardized test; a short essay telling you what the kid thinks you want to hear; an interview with a random alum; a high school record that's largely an index of obedience. Who would rely on such a test?

paulgraham.com/colleges.html

you sound like the white boys i fuck on my weekends upstate

are you guys that easy? i thought this was a high iq board.

Didn't he go to Upenn?

>tries a low-effort repeat of the oxbridge resentment thread from a day or two ago
>fails to garner +300 replies
>fails to obtain the fleeting joy of the troll
>fails at life

Sage goes everywhere for maximum efficiency.

You'll porbly end up pushing a trolley of undergraduate course books around the university library, trying to comprehend the Dewey system, before going home to a bowl of Maruchan and a depressing porno wank.

Truman Capote wrote To Kill a Mockingbird and attributed it to Harper Lee. This should be common knowledge.

>Continental Philosophy, modernist poetry
>and theoretical physics
>but no interest in math or even analytic philosophy

You sound like a pseud that probably reads pop-sci books on "theoretical physics" without realizing that if you can't do even fairly basic physics with a firm understanding of at least calc i-iii and linear algebra (both of which are fairly low level math courses).

Ezra Pound went to Upenn.

That being said, I can't think of a truly great writer who went to Harvard.

William Faulkner, the greatest American writer of the 20th century, dropped out of his abysmally ranked state school after receiving a D in English.

Elizabeth Wurtzel, the already forgotten author of Gen X slog Prozac Nation, graduated from Harvard College before heading off to Yale Law.

When it was still a finishing school for the WASP elite it had some really good writers. Thoreau, Thomas Wolfe, Emerson, Burroughs

The test isn't easy to game. If it's this simple why don't you go to an ivy?

It's still little more than a finishing school for th elite.

Yes but the world's elite, not a regionally specific elite with a shared culture, history, and sense of self.

This is a fishing rod. He just threw it right into the water.

>never have fun again.
You seem pretty shallow
>I'm a polymath
I really don't believe something like this exist today, by definition this would mean you have an infrormed oppion on every relevant topic. This is a thing of the past were some people truley had an infrormed opinon on every development and back than it was possible. According to occam's razor, since your are either the only polymath currently on this planet or just a victim of the Dunning-Kruger effect, it's pretty clear what you actualy are.
>Havard
Great networing, but the quality of the students there is going down hill. Many get in with contacts and diversity quotas and i have friends who went there and both told me this.
>I can't talk about things I like
I thing those, who know something about the things you pretent to be intrested in certianly in most cases won't talk to somebody who isn't at least an aristocract of the soul and who doesn't lack discipline and the control of bodily desires. Ordinary people are excatly those who can't say no to their body and who obsess over youth, while lacking the understanding that should come with age. For a man youth is muse for the female it's her ideal form. For a man to obsess about his age is rather a show of low intellgence, your young years are there to prove you worthy not to get high on your looks.
I doubt your story and think you disdain is all show, but i would wish you to become something more than a poor slave to the contemporary.

Any nigger with a high school diploma can get a full ride scholarship

Glancing at pic and first few words of text, I thought someone might actually be posting about John C.H. Wu, Beyond East and West, an excellent autobiography by a rather brilliant Chinese convert to Catholicism.

Wu was born in 1899, a peasant in rural China. He received a law degree from Michigan Law School in 1921. During the twenties he engaged in an extensive correspondence with OW Holmes Jr of Supreme Court fame.

His book is out of print but inexpensive used copies are available in the usual places, last I checked. A very good book. Catholics will especially enjoy.

Here's his obit:

can the mods please delete this thread

>Polymath
>Philosophy
>Theoretical physics

Terrible bait OP. Here's your (you)

not this again

And yet you came to brag on Veeky Forums. In my personal hierarchy you're lower than your cousin. Neck urself, m8.

>physics
>continental philosophy
Sorry this doesn't work. Would be more believable if u said epistemology or something.
Of course, you could post pictures of yourself in front of your monitor, with a screen that's visible showing your transcript.

op are you an azn gunner obsessed with social standing? no aristocrats go to to harvard, we all go to trinity, rollins and other shit schools that less us do coke in class—no one cares about your attempts to join our class by educating yourself about what our ancestors have done—you will never be one of us

Prove it I want to believe le ebin lit conspiracy

I’m laughin because Stanford has eclipsed Harvard as the best American university, and soon it will be the best in the world.

why are you laughing about that? no one gives a fuck

You're not a polymath you dumb nigger and outside of the lowest bunch, university is irrelevant in terms of quality of individuals.

Was going to post these, glad others beat me to it.

Also Shakespeare, Whitman, Melville, Crane never went to university.

Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol went to no-name schools to study non-humanities subjects.

How does stanford rate in terms of non-stem disciplines? Do people reallt go to study english lit at stanford?
t. non us poster

It rates very well. Its reputation will only increase with time as well.

>academia
>being a good writer
Mediocre bait.

>don't believe in the feeding the delusions of the
>polymath
>harvard

My cousin writes english better than you do, and shes 12 years old and from a non-anglo country.

nice bait tho

especially and These people need to be banned if they 1. can't realize this is bait or 2. respond anyway

did the dude who invented college go to college?

i came here to post this.
always glad to foster quality pastabait production.

I'm bored, here's a (You) just for (you).

>every Oxford bait went into bumplimit within two days
>Harvard struggles with 50 replies in 24 hours

>American education

2. cough ...

oh shit

You have textbook narcisisstic personality disorder. Unless you seek treatment, you'll miss out on a lot of what life has to offer.

Eliot

This type of class trolling thing doesn't transfer that well to an American context.

Sorry, I meant

Really user, this is the bait you're going with? Motherfuck your favorite bait.

American's are bred from a young age to laugh at and shun intellectuals. They don't get butthurt about intelligence like Euros, just tickled.

>prestige
>inelligence
Try again, amerilard

I'm a grad TF in the Harvard program. You undergrads are all delusional megalomaniacal pseuds.

Classic example of the fox and the grapes

It depends on what you mean by easy.

If you have the money for prep schools/aids, you can easily bump up your score several hundred points due to the tests being written in a way that requires "professionals" to assist you in comprehending the questions.

In addition, tons of people with great scores comparable to those accepted are turned away from Ivy Leagues every year. No, not everyone could go to an Ivy League, but 3x-10x as many people that do currently go could if they were not arbitrarily turned away.

It's called youthful indiscretion. Everyone goes through it. It makes you stronger.

>funding as linear ranking component
Try one more time, amerilard.

not to be anarchoprimitive, but I want to bash your head with a rock

These posts are simply lazy. You have to be more subtle than this.

thanks

>harvard
>most well-respected higher education institution in the world
i'm guffawing over here

what ya study also why the fuck you wasting time on Veeky Forums get back to studying

>These posts are simply lazy. You have to be more subtle than this.

Apparently not. This thread is evidence enough.

New user will take any old bait; it's embarrassing, really.

philosophy, and because I like to take mindless breaks from grading sometimes

would you say your peers are generally smarter than the average college student or is it just a meme? id assume past a certain point its just about how hard you work

My peers (fellow grad students) are, for sure. The undergrads, not so much. There are exceptions, but I was surprised at how unexceptional most of these kids are. I went to a middle-tier state university for undergrad and the only difference is that Harvard students are more motivated/obsessed.

my brother went oxford for undergrad and said some of the people were the stupidest he'd met in his life just good at passing exams.

>They have sex with one woman, and then, after a dull adolescence and a dreary young adulthood, they get married and never have fun again.
How are monogamy and intelligence linked?

>funding has no influence on scientific achievement
>well-funded schools do not attract the smartest students and faculty
This is why your brainlet nation's top university can't even compete with third tier American state schools

Polymaths can't exist in modern times retards. Why does lit like taking bait so much?

Polymath and thread about US school system. A p0lymath would have been hard tacleing any school or not. Just look at Tesla college drop out. Hardly after 1 year.books must beat teaching so bad.

tfw go to u of alabama cause it's all i could afford

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

But these threads are fun

>Mass replaying
The only one that should be banned is you. If there is any truth, than it‘s; there is nothing that isn’t bait.

Because my life hasn't been structured around going to any Ivy league school since childhood.

Hey, OP here. Just wanted to let you know that after a fulfilling day at Harvard University, I came home to laugh at the proles. You guys really satisfied my appetite for low-IQ resentment. Mhmmmmm, yum. Anyway, I'm off to my hipster girlfriend's house to hang out with a few friends. We're going to discuss philosophy (real philosophy, mind you—we have no use for the oafish generalizations of Plotinus or the banal idiosyncrasies of Nick Land) and take acid. Meanwhile, you country bumpkins and urban wageslaves will spend the night drinking cheap beer and yelling about football. Hilarious.

>If there is any truth, than it‘s;

t. Mr. Semi Colon esq.

name six real philosophers

Derrida, Lacan, Hegel, Marx, Deleuze, and Heidegger. All of these thinkers are too esoteric for people with an IQ under 140, so give it up, Smooth-Brain.

What good book did you write OP ?

Brainlets post shitty quotes.

>Lacan
nice try, pseud
