Wanted to like East of Eden, but something felt so forced about it. I get that Steinbeck wasn't trying to be subtle with the Bible allusions, but it still didn't ring true. Still a good story overall, but certain elements brought it down. The uber-wise Chinaman was painfully a hamfisted character, and the autistically evil female character was likewise unbelievable. This book hasn't a patch on grapes of wrath

Lord of the Rings.

Anything with decent female characters. A book that excludes half the human race is only half a book
