I love music, and I love writing, but I can't do them both at the same time. Anything with lyrics destroys my concentration, and drone or trance shit is rarely good.
Help me out anons. What's a good soundtrack to write to? Pic unrelated.

Depends of what you're writing.
High fantasy settings/characters/quests for a video game.
About to just listen to Eastern European arrangement of flute and lute or something.
Skyrim/morrowind or even Runescape old school ost. Relaxing and simple. And a bit of medieval
Thanks famiglia. Will also try listening to The Witcher 3 soundtrack. I enjoyed that game, at least.
Dvorak
Let me show you the way.
>Forndom. Sowulo. And some of Wardruna (cause you don't like lyrics; maybe it doesn't matter if you can't understand them).
>Sleep Dealer. Yndi Halda. Explosions in the Sky. The Album Leaf.
>Emancipator? Pretty Lights? Odesza?
"Harder" music?
>Gramatik. Ganja White Night. Hippie Sabotage
Here's a piece I really enjoy, if anyone know of anything like it, tell me. youtube.com
>I also like movie soundtracks, like those by Clint Mansell or James Horner, and yes, even Hanz Zimmer (He's underrated in his overratedness.) Just listen to this: youtube.com
Or you want some big guy's music? For you have been warned, only real tough guys, like myself, can handle this!

Thanks for the feels, user.
Thanks for these recs user. I've listened to about three of Odesza's EPs before and they're good. Was thinking of stuff like that as the exception rather than the rule when it comes to minimalist sounds. Forndom and Sowulo are exactly what I was looking for.

If "EDM" Hardcore or "modern" music isn't your thing . . .
I highly recommend Berlioz youtube.com
Or why not Arvo Pärt? Really chilly sometimes: youtube.com
Vivaldi is something else, sure, Bach Mozart or Beethoven have more quantity in great pieces, but, Vivaldi at his best stands beyond everyone else.

No amount of inclusion in ads or commercials can make this bad and old, while Bach or Beethoven gets played out.
You'll like some of Emancipator too then. Really atmospheric.
Rachel's - Selenography
I prefer jazz to write to.
Get into some top tier ambient if you havent tried. Tim Hecker and Stars of the Lid are good starting places.

I just put on this playlist I have named "FOCUS." It's about 8000 songs of different genres that are conducive to focusing; no distracting vocals, long meandering chord progressions, thick percussion. So basically it's just all classical, jazz and vidya gaym soundtracks.
Keith Jarrett piano solos.
ECM jazz.
Late period Charles Lloyd.
As much as I hate recommending art music as 'background' music, Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians will fulfill your needs admirably.
Thank you for overcoming your revulsion but I've had that album for 15 years. It is Glass/Eno-tier garbage. Just a bit too abstract for my taste.
Checked.
Dig it.
Bump for more Like your style
I love flykt
So I can pretend there's a girl with me.

Seconding this

A mix I made for this purpose
i listen to stretched versions of music. play one of these on or turn all of them on at once and write for hours

Drone music. Try later era Coil (Time Machines, NWW (Soliloquiy for Lilith), Lustmord, that kind of thing.
But only if you write Ligotti-type horror.

Jazz my man works for me in that case, almost always instrumental and if you get some of the more avant garde shit it’s like a mental stimulant, bitches brew by Davis or Out to Lunch by dolphy are my suggestions

no need to thank me
Thanks for all the recommendations. Here's one for you: youtube.com
This may sound stupid, but I think this may be the one time when you could say to try video game music and not be retarded. A lot of VGM is designed to help you be engaged in what you're doing, so I think it might be a good idea. Give it a try, user.
woolf listened to beethoven's string quartets. I do too when I read or write. Anything like that. usually, string quartets or piano sonatas aren't very intrusive
game of thrones soundtrack

Lofi hiphop is pretty nice. Chillstep in general, too.
Added, thanks user.
I loop like, a half dozen different videos of hyenas yipping and laughing and play them really quietly in my headphones and increase the volume to pretend that if I don't write enough in one sitting I'll be left stranded on the edge of a desert to be mauled and eaten by them
Really good for productivity.
I don't understand the beauty of pig squealing. It makes my brain tingle. I feel bliss. I close my eyes, tilt my head up, and moan softly for a moment. What is it? Am I crazy? I need it. My soul aches for it.

hook it up with that jelly roll morton my friend
underrated
I usually find music with lyrics too distracting to listen while writing. I usually go with fado or jazz.
