If you really think about it, in HP being a father either makes you incompetent or evil.

Wow, you might be right! On the other hand all the married women were upstanding and good at what they did:

No, marriage isn't important. What matters is being a caring Heterosexual male father. Bill was fine because they didn't have a kid. As soon as lupin and tonks have a kid? Bam, dead on the ground. Marriage is co-morbid with being a caring father, but I doubt Haggrids father was "married" to that giant. Still a caring father, still ineffectual and dead.

Also the child has to be theirs. You can be a father "figure" to anyone you want, they just can't be genetically yours.

Eh, mothers are all over the place like most of the characters. Molly is a badass, and Luna's mom was a science person doing science stuff. It isn't consistent. If they were alive they could care about their children and effect the plot directly. They didn't all the time... but it was possible.

Caring fathers did not have that option. Oh, just thought of another one: The guy they let Ron pollyjuce to get into the ministry in the last book. He goes down like the rest, but then they rub it in by having his wife be on trial that day. Ron now taking the role of a caring father(I vaguely remember they had kids) is shoved out of the scene to go try to fix an office. Just pretending to be a Caring Father fucks you over.
