Don’t read Shakespeare until you’ve read the Canterbury Tales.

Read these, friend! : ) They're pretty good:

> "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail" by Thompson
> Toni Morrison's books

I'm ESL too and I'm reading Dubliners.

Do you mean that you want a book that is written simply? For example, when I was learning French we read The Stranger because it used very simple language. Is this the type of English book you'd like?

Hemingway and Vonnegut.
Simple, straightforward sentence structure for the most part.

Not to hijack the thread but it seems people can develop a pretty good proficiency for English as their second language. I've seen several examples myself of people who prefer to read in English as opposed to their native language. How much effort does that typically take? And is there any reason why it wouldn't be feasible for an Anglophone to acquire similar reading skills in another language? Of course it's possible, but English, being the lingua franca of our times, seems to exert a certain pressure on non-native speakers to learn it that Anglophones wouldn't have. So at the very least it is likely harder for an Anglophone to acquire such fluency

Ok then you should read some Hemingway as suggested. Try The Old Man and the Sea.

From a non anglo, the hobbit and lotr are aesthetic as fuck

If you can take it, start with children or teen-adult fiction, so Harry Potter.....
