How do you think his project of making an African inspired fantasy series is going to go? Do you like the idea and do you think he’ll be able to pull it off?
I like his previous work, I super like the concept and I’m glad it recognizes the fact that there were slave traders and other fucked up shit in African society. I’ll probably be getting the book when it comes out.

Sounds cool desu and Im racist

are we talking about
>DUDE TOLKIEN BUT WITH BLACKS
or
>Fantasy based on african myths and folktales

That is important for me to know.

Fantasy based in African mythology. It’ll be an entire universe away from the themes and world of Tolkien, but I can get why he would use Tolkien’s name to generate buzz.

read nalo hopkinson's midnight robber

Where can i read more about this?

I would unironically read about fantasy based on African myths/folktales (as well as fantasies based on any other cultures' myths)
I'm such a fucking sucker for that shit

mite b cool

same

Also all the shamanistic voodoo shit makes for really interesting ideas. I'll probably read and enjoy it if its not preachy or trying to push a political narrative

This.

Wish more niggers did nice things like this.

>I’m glad it recognizes the fact that there were slave traders and other fucked up shit in African society.
Really breaking new ground with that. Is there black lit that’s not about historical grievances, single motherhood, or crime culture?

if someone casts a spell that summons a ring of fire around their victim’s neck I’ll have a good lol tho

I'm intrigued. Could be awesome, done well.

I fucking loved A Brief History, I really hope he succeeds, even though it's not really my thing.

Tailor made for Veeky Forums

Leave it to the Africans you fucking American imperialist culturally appropriating straight black male

>American imperialist
>Straight
Marlon James is a gay Jamaican

I thought this was the undeground railroad dude. Caribbean writers tend to be great so this will be good.

Holy shit this could be good. I'm tired of seeing the same symbols all the time.
This is better than the negative approach. I hope it works out.

Hope he succeeds, sounds cool. More Africans should create culture instead of complaining about not being represented well enough in western culture.

cool

speaking of, I remember reading this gay porn on asstr but besides the gay shit the story was actually really cool. It was about some Native American dude being chased down by a Wendigo and the Wendigo's minions while he was travelling to some tribal gathering place, or trying to make it to Tenochtitlan or something. It was bretty good desu minus the weird non-rape "rape". I mean seriously, if you're gonna rape a guy just stuff your dick in his ass and fuck him until he cries, don't stroke his balls you faggot.

Anyway I would totally read a book like that minus the gayness.

It has vast potential. I am surprised it hasn't been attempted before but you know what themes and ideas blacks are preoccupied with...

Achebe's Arrow of God maybe the closest I've read to having African mythology and beliefs involved, but even that devolves to muh white invader messing it up.. again

I'll probably check it out from the library. I've been hoping for a long time that someone bases a high fantasy on Indian (red) myths and stories, I think it would be very cool.

I mean, they're going to contribute to culture, instead of run around picketing and complaining about their children getting shot by white police officers, after they abandoned their child at an early age and left them to fend for themselves in the streets.
So, I really can't say anything bad about this at all. Good luck to this man. I'm sure it'll be hugely successful even if a single black person never even watches it, what with all the political activism by whites in the country today

Well this black lit will probably have all of that, but this time it's contained in its own universe where there wasn't a European slave trade and colonial era, so anything bad that does happen will be the fault of other black people

Well it can be hard for people from Africa to make hifi content, so any media that is easily accessible to a first world market will probably be from an African American author who will almost certainly write about the history of their own ancestory. Ergo, white people will almost always be the bad guy of the story.

Sometimes cool shit does appear. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a great book, I just got the Epic of Sundiata and have been loving that, and even movies like Yeelen sometimes become recognized internationally.

It's really just a problem of quality and accessibility more than it is a lack of creative culture.

I commented before about the movie Yeelen. That is straight up fantasy art house from African myth and I highly suggest it if you're looking for that genre.

Who is this?

Hadn't heard of him before but I'm super interested now

Try Ben Okri, maybe? He writes African magic realism.

Also the racial themes are at least partly due to publishing pressures, I think. Ie if you're a publisher marketing a black author, you want them to have written about race because that's what the market wants. Same reason 90% of translated Chinese books seem to be misery-memoirs about the Cultural Revolution.

I went too far down the genre hole and found Steamfunk

We doing this?

Alright, I guess I gotta do it

Isn't this the guy who said "Instead of bitching about why there aren't black Hobbits, I'm going to make a fantasy book that's actually about African mythology" or something like that?

Assuming that is what the project seems to be. Sure. Would Anansi Boys count as African Mythology inspired fantasy?

No idea who he is.

This though

not one red pilled response in this whole thread, im impressed

is that still going on? I saw there was an article about how straight black men are the etc. etc. I'm sure you know the one, has there been more of that?

It depends who the audience is. Needs a sizeable black readership to take hold.

>sizeable black readership
Meme of the year

We was elvish keengs and shit man

The nigger can't write. That's the truth. Affirmative action in action.

>pickle nick

memes are going too far

Brief History blew cock. I don’t know how in hell it managed to win the Booker.

>Gay black author

Oh wait never mind, I know how it won.

>No plot.
>No plot for hundreds of pages.
>Muh ebonics.

Did your gender studies teacher force you to read it?

Can you give me any actual argument or reason that supports your view?

Tolkien more like Token

Sounds great. Seven Killings is probably my favourite book to be honest. Every single page had me completely gripped and itching for more.

Awful. Black literature and fantasy are already two of the most obnoxious and poorly written literary genres there are. Combining them sounds like a gimmicky recipe for failure. Thought I admit it will undoubtedly be a commercial success (it's the kind of idea that will have NYT-reading binge watchers creaming their shorts before they even buy the hardcover)

I'm very, very fucking bored with black artists who confuse their perversion of European American art and pop culture with originality. There is absolutely nothing creative about injecting your flat Negroid face into a Disney princess or Founding Father or HBO fantasy show. It degrades was often already a very low form of culture, and it reeks of laziness and narcissism, not to mention a total lack of taste

The grown ups were talking, faggots. Go back to /b/ or /pol/ or wherever the fuck you came from.

It's the same shit the Jewish often do and I'm not even a butdajoos fag.

Both go for easy feefee points and their real art gets buried. If there ever will be a great black author, he's going to be overshadowed by his conartist competitors. The same way Jews riding the holocaust-theme and the quirky-Jew meme kills any meaningful art they produce.

i read almost no authors who have published in the past ~20 years. should i give Seven Killings a shot?

>Implying that if you don't like 600 pages of no plot and incomprehensible dialogue then you're a child.

The emperor has no clothes, user. Liking something that's garbage because it's perceived as progressive doesn't make you smarter than the people who see it for what it is. Seven Killings is the literary equivalent of Basquiat's newspaper, crayon and glue "artwork."

>five complaints about a novel
>Three of them are much plot
>The other two are much can't into regional dialect
literature is not for you. you were never going to make it. find a new hobby.

You're a fucking idiot is what you are.

>Tells someone to get a new hobby.
>His hobby is praising an overrated homosexual negro's overrated book on a cambodian volleyball forum.

Yeah, I'm just a retard for not enjoying 600 pages of literary vomit. Face it, the book wouldn't have won the Man Booker Prize if it wasn't written by a gay black man immigrant. I've read a lot of Booker winners and shortlists and none of them have sucked except for this.
