Was it autism?

was it autism?

He was the perfect employee, caring for nothing but his work.

Melville..... easy on the analogies....

Bartleby just wanted to be a NEET but didn't know how to do it. The book's really about the lawyer, not about Bartleby, though.

No, you don't get it.

Seemed to me he knew very well how to be a NEET

Probably desu

>man spends most of his adult life feeling misunderstood
>a giant room full of undeliverable letters
I dunno. Try becoming a failed novelist because you wrote the greatest book and see if it makes you sad.

It was modernism.

Imagine kidnapping Bartleby and forcing him into period-fitting corsettes. Imagine hearing his voice quiver "I-I would p-prefer not to" as you bend his frail body into position.

Bartleby was just an actual stoic instead of the poser tryhards who usually adopt the title
Siddhartha Gautama didn't have shit on this guy

It's the spiritual prequel to Office Space.

Now this is the stuff I come to Veeky Forums for

Fantastic!

Bartleby would have been an interesting crew member on the Pequod.

Christ, go get a hooker. Faggot.

I'd prefer not to.

It was probably Thoreau.

he was diddling Ginger Nut for his ginger nuts.

die in a prison you filthy scum.

I'd prefer not too.

Melville had autism, and me have autism. I'll be the next Melville. Just watch me write the next Great American Novel, a better one than The Whale. Screencap this comment and save it on multiple hard drives. In about 40 years flat, expect me, don't forget me.

This caused me to laugh for the first in months.

>The book's really about the lawyer, not about Bartleby, though.
implying the two aren't the same person

you set yourself up way too easily desu

I’ll remember you

>tfw found this story so powerful
>not even sure why
Melville a best.

Oh man haha that's so weird. What would happen after that? (not that I would want to know haha just curious)

Had the same experience. Pretty sure it's because the story opens on light humor, goes to some heady places, drops a bit more humor, then gets dark once it's earned darkness. Too many sad stories start sad.
Nice trips.

Boule de Suif is another one that earns it.
