What do writers do for a living?

Kerouac: railroad brakeman and fire lookout
Pynchon: technical writer at Boeing
Spinoza: lens grinder
Borges: director of the national library of argentina
Kafka: something to do with an insurance company

Me: unemployed, trying to write for money and if I'm not successful then suicide is my last option.

Is my experience, just in case, some people may believe I am saying a big shit. I am not.
Is useful if you want the active life of a "writer". You can put it in your resumé, and it can help you to get a job or meet some type of people.
And if you actively promote it aiming to be part of a certain group of writers.
But you have to invest a lot of social time, and also money. Occasions where you can make money from your writing, real money, is not that common. So, publishing your book, being self-published or not, is about making you a name. It can be a shitty book but you are still a published guy.
So I am not publishing anything until I am like 50 probably.

i would think it would make you feel better about your own work.

Gay sex in a factory also being an eminently patrician endeavour, if I may add.
