I love the lyrics on this, especially Suzanne. Such gorgeous imagery.

one of the few canadians who mattered ;_;

The others being Neil Young, Russell Peters, Dennis Villeneuve, Trailer Park Boys and Rush.

Tender Prey
Let Love In
Murder Ballads
Real Gone
Bone Machine
Mule Variations

Everything wrote.

You're forgetting some people but you're basically correct.

I probably am, you know. Early Annihilator and Voivod. Wayne Gretsky. That Jap dude with the medical system. The chick that wrote Bear. That sniper that holds thr distance record for a confirmed kill.

Another few would be the Banting, Terry Fox, Suzuki at the very least.
Are you Canadian? Or just an enthusiast of our meagre country?

Neither, it just happens that I like a lot og things that your country produces. TPB is by far my favorite comedy show. Villeneuve is the best post-2000 director. Rusell Peters was the first comedian I remember watching way back when and I still think he hits the perfect note between insulting and friendly. Rush is my dad's favorite band. Simply coinkidink.

Where you from?
Greetings from the North!
On the more Veeky Forums end we've produced Harold Innis and Marshall McLuha, so check those guys out if you haven't.

Unironically In the Aeroplane over the sea as well

>days keep growing short, nights too

I lile this.

Eastern Europe. It's a shitty place to be in but people drink a lot and the girls are a class above the rest of the world so it's fine. Thanks for the recs user.

>You came, and lay a
>Cold compress upon
>The mess I'm in
>Threw the windows wide
>And cried Amen
>Amen, Amen

>Though I never knew the way
>To border them in

From the song Emily. Ys is a beautiful album y'all. ain't shit has happened in music since this dropped in 06

>Veeky Forums reveals its gay, uninteresting, lower intelligence whyte person taste

Anais Mitchell is comparable in quality

Where should I start with her

Young Man in America if you want more of an Americana/Singer-Songwriter

Hadestown if you want some guest musicians helping make a weird dustbowl Eurydice

From a Veeky Forums perspective, Her language isn't as directly intense as Newsom, but she has a better sense of meter (and I'd say her rhymes sound better than just about anyone)

Since it's such a lyrically focused genre, what are your opinions on hip hop? Is it all without merit? Is some of it good? I can't help but find some of the wordplay on albums like pic related pretty thrilling.

>Is insecure about their music taste
>Is a fag with nothing to contribute

>everything TVZ wrote
lmao, I love him, but fuck no

Rakim is a terrific lyricist and so are Guru and Mos Def. There's a couple of lads in my country that do it like it's not a big deal and just go with this chillhop kinda thing where they play the kind of Bukowski thing about women but with a tinge of reggae and low-key bragging. I dig it.

Everything’s so restless
The wind has come again
Blowing me so far
I think I see a star
First you think your fortune’s lovely
And you fly out through the door
Grandmama I feel so lonely
My rapture’s painted on the floor
The roads lead all to Jacob’s kitchen
I’m sitting moon eyed at the table
Sitting blank-eyed by the door
Oh Lord, do you really think I’m able
Well I chose this love completely
When you took away the charm
Set your mind on breaking burdens
Said you done no one no harm
I feel a bit like floating water
Headed for the rocks at bay
Crash upon some ocean liner
Comes upon my lonesome way
Thought I see your eyes a-flashing
Thunder in your hair
I burnt a match for your complexion
The lights went out and you weren’t there
Seated by the ranch I’m owning
Staring at the cellophane
Somebody came in for a question
I poured a glass out in the rain
The reason I have been accepted
Is that I failed to come on strong
Found a chair beside a window
Found a place where I belong
Inside myself there is no question
Just the jangle of our brain
Three times four is twenty-seven
Only fragments still remain
I curse the day I found my freedom
You took the mirror from the wall
Placed it in a single suitcase
Pointed down a hollow hall
You said you see your true direction
I’ll be there behind the sun
And I’ll go with you in the springtime
When all your travels have been done

Edgy done right

Just going to chime in. I know Nick Cave personally and he's a fucking asshole. Like just a degenerate, really.

I know this is more than likely fake, but I'm such a fan of his music I just have to ask for details anyway.

...

Grew up with his family in Australia, in grade 5 they sent his son Jethro to live with him in London, kid was never the same. Sure, he showers his extended family with love and affection now, but he has fucked so many people now, he just got lucky that he's hipster cool. If he wasn't rich, everyone would just see him as a real deadbeat.

holy fucking shit watch more films

>the dude who moved to Berlin because the speed is cheaper and spent several years of his life with a crippling heroin addiction and living in squalor is a degenerate

Damn, really made me think.

All artists are degenerates, all /pol/fags are autistic incels :^)

Why'd you leave out the best part
>So the muddy mouths of baboons and sows
>And the grouse and the horse and the hen
>Grope at the gate of the looming lake
>That was once a tidy pen
>And the mail is late and the great estates
>Are not lit from within
>The talk in town's becoming
>Downright sickening

Eh, if I'm gonna be honest that's more or less how I expected he might be. Very often great artists are fucking assholes in real life, or are otherwise fucked up through whatever circumstances.

Literally his most musical and least poetic album. Could not have made a worse pick.

Pic related is the true Veeky Forumsizen's choice

Based user

Have you heard about this house
Inside, a thousand voices talk
And that talk echoes around and around
The windows reverberate
The walls have ears
A thousand saxophone voices talk

You should hear how we syllogize
You should hear
About how Babel fell and still echoes away,
How we idolize,
Theorize
Syllogize
In the dark,
In the heart

All I hear is...
Talk
All I hear is...
Talk
Hear the sound of the jibberty jungle
In the dark, a thousand insect voices chitter-chatter

The sun goes up
Goes over
Goes down
I seek sleep
I sleep
I forget

Visions of Johanna though? I can't think of a song with better lyrics

>Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
>We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

>Louise, she's all right, she's just near
>She's delicate and seems like the mirror
>But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
>That Johanna's not here
>The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face

>Inside these museums, infinity goes up on trial
>Voices echo this is what salivation must be like after a while

Not putting the entire song doesn't do it justice though tbqh it just builds and builds

...

yeah, blonde on blonde sure doesn't reach the poetic heights of nashville skyline and down in the groove

Well it's 9th and Hennepin
And all the donuts have
Names that sound like prostitutes
And the moon's teeth marks are
On the sky like a tarp thrown over all this
And the broken umbrellas like
Dead birds and the steam
Comes out of the grill like
The whole goddamned town is ready to blow
And the bricks are all scarred with jailhouse tattoos
And everyone is behaving like dogs
And the horses are coming down Violin Road
And Dutch is dead on his feet
And the rooms all smell like diesel
And you take on the
Dreams of the ones who have slept here
And I'm lost in the window
I hide on the stairway
I hang in the curtain
I sleep in your hat
And no one brings anything
Small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
One for every year he's away she said
Such a crumbling beauty, but there's
Well, nothing wrong with her that
$100 won't fix
She has that razor sadness
That only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder
Of the Southern Pacific going by
As the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
Till you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
And you spill out
Over the side to anyone who'll listen
And I've seen it
All through the yellow windows
Of the evening train

Fuck off back to /mu/ if you wanna talk about personality and not lyrics like the OP asked. He doesn't make himself out to be a good guy anyway, and if we didn't talk about people who others have called assholes most boards would be dead. Do you think this is reddit or something?

Wireless enthusiast intercepts government secret radio band And uncovers secrets and scandals of deceitful type proportions

Aghast goes next door to his neighbor, secretly excited, as
Aforementioned was a hunter whom radio enthusiast wanted
Friendship and favor of

A new face in hell

Nearly a new face in hell!

A muscular, thick-skinned, slit-eyed neighbor is at the table
Poisoned just thirty seconds before by parties who knew of
Wireless operator's forthcoming revelation

A new face in hell!

A prickly line of sweat covers enthusiast's forehead as the
Realization hits him that the same government him and his now
Dead neighbor voted for and backed and talked of on cream porches
Have tricked him into their war against the people who enthusiast
And dead hunter would have wished torture on. A servant of
Government walks in and arrests wireless fan in
Kitchen for murder of his neighbor

A new face in hell!

The dead cannot contradict
Sometimes the living cannot

A new face in hell!

>least poetic album
Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is his most poetic song.

Let me know when your sadboy singer songwriters use Americana viewed through a foreign lens as a vehicle for a Sadean glorification of sexual violence.

When it happened we walked through the estates of Manchester right to Newcastle. In Darlington, helped a large man on his own chase off some kids who were chucking bricks and stuff through his flat window. She had a way with people like that. He cursed us and we moved on.
Junior Choice played one morning: the song was English Scheme, one of mine. They'd changed it with a grand piano and turned it into a love song. How they did it I don't know. DJs had worsened since the rising, elaborating on nothing in praise of the track with words they could hardly pronounce in telephone voices.
I was mad and laughed at the same time. The West German Government had brought over large yellow trains on Teesside docks. In Edinburgh I stayed on my own a few days wandering about in the pissing rain before the Queen Mother hit town.
I'm Joe Totale! The yet unborn son! The North will rise again,
the North will rise again (not in 10,000 years). Too many people cower to criminals and government crap (the estates stick up like stacks). The North will rise again, the North will rise again, the North will rise again, the North will rise again (you are mistaken friend). Look where you are, look where you are: the future death of my father. (Shift!)
Tony was a business friend of RT XVII, and was an opportunist man. Come, come hear my story: how he set out to corrupt and destroy this future rising. Business friend came round today: with teeth clenched he grabbed my neck. I threw him to the ground, his blue shirt stained red. The north will rise again: he said you are mistaken, friend. I kicked him out of home. Too many people cower to criminals and government pap, when all it takes is hard slap.
Out the window burned the roads: men with besom sticks, the Fall had made them sick. A man with butterflies on his face! His brother threw acid in his face (his tattoos were screwed). The streets of Soho did reverberate with drunken Highland men (revenge for Culloden dead). The North had rose again, but it would turn out wrong. The North will rise again.
So Totale dwelt underground, away from sickly blind with ostrich head-dress: face a mess, covered in feathers, orange-red with blue-black lines that draped down to his chest (body a tentacle mess and light blue plant-heads). TV showed Sam Chippendale (no conception of what he'd made): the Arndale had been razed, shop staff knocked off their ladders, security guards hung from moving escalators.
And now that is said Tony seized the control. He built his base in Edinburgh: had on his hotel wall a hooded friar on a tractor. He took a bluey and he called Totale, who said: "The North has rose again, but it will turn out wrong. When I was in cabaret I vowed to defend all of the English clergy, though they have done wrong. And now the Fall has begun! This has got out of hand. I will go for foreign aid."
But Tony, laughed down the phone: "Totale go back to bed. The North has rose today, and you can stuff your aid! And you can stuff your aid!"

The crumpet man's thinker and the Holsten man's stinker.

and are from pic related, as is 'Impression of J. Temperance', a sinister artefact from the long, long days in which MES felt inclined to write narrative:

Hate wide for dog breeder
in the town of purport.
A never seen dog breeder:
this is the tale of his replica.

Name was J. Temperance.
Only two did not hate him
because peasants fear local indifference,
pet shop and the vet, Cameron.

One night vet is called out
from his overpaid leisure
to Temperance household:
delivered, ran out,
and phoned his wife in terror.

The next bit is hard to relate.
(there are no read-outs for this part of the track),
the new born thing hard to describe:
like a rat that's been trapped inside
a warehouse base, near a city tide
(brown sockets, purple eyes)
and fed with rubbish from disposal barges...
brown, uncovered.
Brown, uncovered.

No changeling,
as the birth was witnessed.
Only one person could do this:
"Yes" said Cameron
"and the thing was in the
impression of J. Temperance."

His hideous replica,
scrutinised little monster
disappeared through the door.
This hideous replica!
This hideous replica!

Not a bad choice, but Beat the Champ and Tallahassee are better

I love Nick Cave but the main quality of his music is in his voice, his texts are trite and weak on their own.

In that regatd he's a dwarf compared to and and of course Dylan

Aaron Weiss is a very thoughful lyricist.

"I was swimming through the waves for what must have been days...
But could find no relief;
When I started sinking down I thought for certain I would drown...
Until I saw you in the ocean,
Underneath all the bright colored fish tell of a treasure in a dull shell...
"Such subtlety, so easily missed!"
You, my hidden pearl of pure and perfect love,
And I'm the living example of 100% the opposite of this."

People might disagree with me, but I think Pavement has a lot of great lyrics. A lot of nice wordplay and stream of consciousness stuff and some great imagery as well. Really good at producing a certain feeling with the lyrics even if there's no clear narrative or whatever.

Fav song? Mine is passat dream

thats such a great song. i'm not sure, they are my favorite band so it's tough to narrow it down. I'll list some favorites though...

Kennel District
Gold Soundz
Starlings of the Slipstream
Painted Soldiers
In the Mouth a Desert
Spit on a Stranger

I'd add Blue Hawaiian and Zurich is Stained to that for best Pavement songs.

The most brilliant singer/songwriter of the 90s. Lots of influence from Dostoyevsky and Kierkegaard, who were apparently two of his favorites (and biggest influences) according to his family and close friends.

i only listwn to music scruffi rated 7.5+

That is unironically a decent system to go off of.

I think you should add to that list. Van Zandt can go toe to toe with Dylan easily

he's right 80% of the time

Bowerbird, you'd turn a birdbath black
What the hell could be the matter with you?
Where did you come from and why'd you go collecting
Anything that turns the colour blue?

My nigger. Townes Van Zandt is criminally underrated.

Can't believe you have missed Joni Mitchell

Milk and honey

Nas illmatic is a poetry masterpiece

Cry harder pretentious faggot baby

pavement and built to spill are my favorite bands also

hes pleased to meet you underneath the horse
in the cathedral with a heart stained glass

Language is limited, music is limitless.

[Verse]
I got idea man
You take me for a walk
Under the sycamore trees
The dark trees that blow, baby
In the dark trees that blow

[Chorus]
And I'll see you
And you'll see me
And I'll see you in the branches that blow
In the breeze
I'll see you in the trees
I'll see you in the trees
Under the sycamore trees

And I'll see you
And you'll see me
And I'll see you in the branches that blow
In the breeze
I'll see you in the trees
I'll see you in the trees
Under the sycamore trees

>but the main quality of his music is in his voice

Except its not. Its the music. The atmosphere the instrumentation creates really something

Springsteen

Stay cuckmad

Also Bob Lind, David Tibet, Jandek, David Berman, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell and Paddy McAloon come to mind

I'm not hugely into their music but I think Lindemann can write.

This desu.

I fell asleep amongst the boulders strewn between
Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr
and I saw in a dream
your charmless associates in a stretch limousine:
they were plunging headlong into a ravine.
And your Evening of Swing has been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled...
your Evening of Swing.

Came the behemoth, seven score and nine
to rescue all the children from their parents on the line:
they took them to a crash site,
unfurled a ball of twine
and tied a bunch of flowers around the speed limit sign.
No more the Multiplex,
stood in its stead
pleasure grounds with maze in the shape of a sled.
Outside the Gielgud, a neon sign read:
“Equus On The Buses”, starring Mr Ed.
And your Evening of Swing had been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled...
your Evening of Swing.

And a plague fell upon the Retail Park
and a storm broke over Henman Hill...
and the christening party arsehole
who hitherto had blurred
my conception of man as nature’s final word
was fleeing from the lava,
his satnav pleading thus:
“I’m not from round here mate, you should have got the bus!"
Enter then a real rat pack,
millions pouring in
and Ezekiel punched Dan Brown
and the knights are drawing in...
and your Evening of Swing has been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled,
your Evening of Swing has been cancelled...
your Evening of Swing.

Disgusting.
