Missing the point. What made it important to him, was the aesthetic quality of the ideology. He openly dismissived the ideology as nonsensical and happily utilized it to slip into a role which made him move closer and closer to his desired destiny. His turn towards the right was significant, but if one is not aware of his ironical distance and clear deconstruction which founded his commitment to the ideology, instead of the naive and thorough belief of actual right-wingers, one does a bad job of representing his motives.

He was definitely analytical and self-aware, but you shouldn’t deprive his turn to the right of all sympathy - Mishima was obviously concerned with social criticism and his embrace of right-wing ideals and aesthetics includes sincere wrestling with the cultural problems important to that perspective. Mishima wasn’t deluded and unironic, but he wasn’t a total cynic and appropriator either.

i don't think richie spencer is concerned much with suicide and gay sex, but the essence of what he values is the same as what Mishima values. After all, suicide and gay sex are perhaps the "fundamentalism" of old japan in the same way that spencer's demands are a reimagining of the "good old" imperial days of america. I wouldn't be surprised if he could find a lot of "common ground" with mishima's writing in that they're both in essentially the same societal position.

I think the vastness of the political categories of left and right makes proper apprehension of the nuances and differences between different figures (in vastly different cultures) a lot more fuzzy. For instance, neither Mishima nor Spencer are “fundamentalists”. Mishima’s values are closer to acceptability than Spencer, both in his country/time and today, and he was also a famous and respected writer, whereas Spencer is a fringe figure of mockery. Mishima was also principally an artist and rather cosmopolitan in his tastes, rather than a card carrying member or fellow-traveller of a political movement.
