Bear with me now, I am searching for the best translation of the Old Saxon poem Beowulf. I have already read the Seamus Heaney translation into modern English. I have read the criticisms of his translation, and thus I ask you all what is the most accurate translation of the old Poem.
What is the best translation of the old poem.

Jokes aside, Seamus is probably the best. I've also read Charles Kennedy and liked him as well. Tolkien's version is in prose but the commentary is pretty dope, definitely check it out if you are into Beowulf/Anglo-Saxon language.

Bump for interest.

Beowolf is in English, read a book dumbass.

>needing an English translation for a book written in English

Is it worth to learn old english? What more can I read with it?

Whan Cnut Cyng the Witan wold enfeoff
Of infangthief and outfangthief
Wonderlich were they enwraged
And wordwar waged
Sware Cnut great scot and lot
Swinge wold ich this illbegotten lot.
Wroth was Cnut and wrothword spake.
Well wold he win at wopantake.
Fain wold he brakë frith and crackë heads
And than they shold worshippe his redes.
Swingéd Cnut Cyng with swung sword
Howléd Witane hellë but hearkened his word
Murië sang Cnut Cyng
Outfangthief is Damgudthyng.

You're being obtuse.

Tolkien.

It game me aneurysm.

Tolkein's good, but he messes with the metre in a lot of his translations and you can often lose the flow of the writing

it was from "1066 and All That", a classic british book of mis-remembered history. the authors were proud of the fact that the book only featured two dates - 32 BC and 1066 - having ruled that any other dates were not memorable and therefore irrelevant.

Needing modern translations when you can watch the movie. I'm confounded by the fact that you nerds want to subject yourself to reading when there are films that almost certainly exceed the books every time.
