So these are the people who I'm sharing a board with... woah...
Check me out
goodreads.com
Hey, is this Goodreads thing worthwhile? My wife uses it and she has a sort of "book club" where she coordinates with other people on what they're reading and discussing each month. Seems sort've cool.
What's the appeal? Is there any catch?
i don't have an account
convince me to make one. what is useful about goodreads? what is it exactly? what is it usually used for?
It's Facebook, for bookies (:
here,
From what I can tell, it's just an app for tracking what you've read that also gives you recommendations, (Though those recommendations are based on popularity.) So far it has piqued my interest because while it is dumb enough to just throw a bunch of the classics at me, it was also specific enough to know I have a weakness for trashy S&S novels.
And like I said before, my wife uses it to coordinate an international book club. So, if that's the sort of thing you're in to...
But I'm curious, myself.
does it include discussion forums of some kind or is it just for book reccs?
From what I've seen, it's similar to a facebook group. (Though, I'm not very familiar with facebook. I don't have any other social media... Other than a Goodreads account, now.) I'm fairly certain that you can find a group for whatever genre or author you like and open a sort of mini-message board thing.
I immediately added a couple people I know and saw their reading history and had to snicker. One of my buddies, apparently took a break from his heavy reading last year to read a bunch of Goosebumps.
Prva liga :)
my profile is private and i wont share it
You can put your rage love creativity and passion into writing reviews. Some of the people here would be quite good at writing those, id like to see what they can come up with.
Is it possible to create "groups" on goodreads? like a Veeky Forums group for example
It gives a lot of cool recommendations
It's been some time since i was last here so I doubt I have any of you.
I can't copy the link to my profile.

ok, i made one
goodreads.com
i'm still new to this, anyone want to take the initiative and make a Veeky Forums group? assuming that's even possible. still not sure how this site works
what's so bad
no but I know I need to get more into novels and less into "graphic novels"
Groups exist but they are not really worth making. At least when last.fm had groups you could see the most played albums of the week/month for /mu/.
Is Goodreads more patrician than Veeky Forums?
is it possible to add a book to their site if it's missing? i can't seem to find the t.e. lawrence translation of the odyssey, which is a shame cause it's beautiful
nvm i figured out how to add
Thats the versino I read too, but I had to search it through ISBN.
Goodreads isn't very good as a cataloguing tool.
>Thats the versino I read too
nice, seems like a rare one. it was a lucky find at a used bookstore. i had to do like five double takes before it registered that this was the same t.e. lawrence who wrote seven pillars of wisdom aka lawrence of arabia. he's definitely an underrated master of prose.
I picked up mine used too, but didn't realize it was him until I started reading it.
Although now that I double check, this isn't my version either
goodreads.com
Mine is a wordsworth classic from 1992, but George Chapman isn't mentioned anywhere on mine, and I have a different cover. Pic related is mine, but I can't find it on goodreads.
only non-brainlet ITT

I read and review a lot of indies. I'm into pulpy stuff, crime and weird horror especially. If you've got Kindle Unlimited, I've got lots of recommendations in these genres.
i think that wordsworth one was the one i read, as well. lost it unfortunately

why is this site so bad and why aren't there any good alternatives?
The catechism is garbage and you're garbage
Whenever someone says its bad, I ask why, and they reference totally avoidable reviews by females. I would recommend librarything for its early internet UI and datapoints but no social functions, except it also has totally avoidable reviews by females.
Is this guy a pseud? I added him and all his activity seems to be spreading comments of praise left and right to whoever claims to read fwulysses.

I’m okay shifting through a bunch of shit to find some diamonds. Doesn’t stop the shit from being shit.
Why do people have unrated books in their read shelves? It triggers my autism.
sometimes you can't rate them, in my experience is due to a powerful emotional connection which cannot be expressed. So I just mark it as read because it has more meaning that way.
I have a few unrated ones in my shelves because I don't think I grasped it properly to be able to give it an appropriate rating.
Not really. Found more readers of YA through the website than facebook and myspace combined.
Poprilično si bijedan čovjek
In general it is far worse (if that's even possible) than Veeky Forums. But if you select your friends carefully it can be far better as well.
Yeah but I mean you have stuff like Anna Karenina waiting on your to-read list while you torture yourself. Unless that isn't up to date or something.
>I just mark it as read because it has more meaning that way
It objectively has less meaning because when one of your friends lists a book unrated it shows up as "___ added it" mixed among all the to-read listings while all the ratings are above. Sometimes I don't see someone has read something because they didn't rate it.
Rating is pretty silly and arbitrary anyway so I don't sweat over whatever ratings I give.
someone r8 me
An entirely fair point. With my job I find it hard to give longer books the attention I feel like they warrant, usually I can only get through 300 pages or so a week between work and I always feel like three weeks is too long to stretch out the reading of a longer classic like Anna Karenina. But I also admit that genre stuff is easier to read, so despite my ambitions to finish longer books with better reputations I often times default to reading genre stuff that I've heard is decent (even though I know that a high proportion of genre stuff is going to be bad, whether I've heard good things or not). That's a personal flaw, I'm still working out how to better motivate myself to read the tomes I know I should read.
Man I know the feeling, and what works for me is to keep throwing myself into greater challenges or I just fall into greater disorganization. Doesn't mean it works for you or your tastes but I'd at least encourage it. And Tolstoy I find goes down easy despite intimidating pagecounts. It took me longer to read Moby-Dick than W&P.
your pretty cool tee bee haych
