only as much as was necessary to convey the monotony of the gulags. I quite liked it, it gave me some useful perspective on my life and a bit of insight into that particular part of Russian history, but it hasn't exactly sent me scrambling for the rest of Solzhenitsyn's back catalogue. it probably helped that I read it all in 24 hours, so I didn't have time to get bored.
