Is this guy overrated?

Is this guy overrated?

underrated by americans, properly rated by euros

He was an edgy goth. Absolute drivel.

found the American

His poetry is horrible and only people who don't speak English like it, which says a lot. His stories are genuinely innovative and spooky though.

Your post belies your question.

I didn't even know he wrote poetry. Dude is only known for his stories.

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were--I have not seen
As others saw--I could not bring
My passions from a common spring--
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow--I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone--
And all I lov’d--I lov’d alone--
Then--in my childhood--in the dawn
Of a most stormy life--was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still--
From the torrent, or the fountain--
From the red cliff of the mountain--
From the sun that ‘round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold--
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by--
From the thunder, and the storm--
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view--

His poetry sounds pretty but it's nothing special.

The raven is a bit overrated but still good desu senpai

All my American lit teachers loved him though.
My mom had all his stories too

Sir, his poetry is his most popular merit. 'The Raven' is more popular than any of his stories. (It doesn't mean he's a good poet though).
You pleb.

I'm with /ourboy/ Eliot on this one. He was an important influence for some big writers, but not very special on his own.

that's a reasonable view.

Let me guess, you only like Poe because of the "historical" or "political" significance of his work?

he is rated quite fairly

no.

Nobody reads poetry.

we like it because it's scary you dumb faggot

The only American writer who's ever mattered.

Nightpain isn't overrated

to be fair, that's his only significance
his brand of horror was completely of that time

Not true. The imp of the perverse is very relatable. He nailed that sensation better than anyone.

objectively incorrect

I don't really know how he's rated...but I know I like most of his work and admire how creative and original it generally is.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Black Cat are my two favourites, but I've read most of his short stories and they're very good overall.

surely you live in a cultural vacuum

Here is the problem: if you read him with the mentality of a writer, he certainly is; if you read him with the mentality of a reader, he is not.

Baudelaire understood him well, as did Fernando Pessoa.

He influenced better poets (Baudelaire, Pessoa) than Eliot ever will.

He is over-underrated by Americans and semi-overrated by Europeans. Hyper-rated by the Hottentots, he is merely meta-rated south of the Panama canal. In Korea, as is their wont, he is sepa-rated, the pungent Pakis would have him penet-rated and the cheeky Czechs defenest-rated. Overall, let's just say he is...rated.

Under-rated.
