You might be interested in "Defying Hitler" by Sebastian Hoffner. His account of that time, written in 1939, shows what life was like for a fairly prosperous family.
One of the interesting things he points out is that following WW1, the "rules" of how things should work were very unstable, in that old school families became poor, upstarts became rich, people who tried to play fair lost, and those who cheated won. Plus, you had demonstrations and street fighting between the Nazis, socialists, and communists. When Hitler came to power, this settled down; stable periods of calm are always good for businesses - you know the rules and can plan out for the future.

For ordinary Germans that were not part of a discriminated-against group (Jews, Communists, etc) probably quite good. The economy was fake and inevitably would need war to be sustainable, however 36 would have been a stable year.

In my reading however, I have always gotten the feeling that by 1936 it was becoming a nervous experience in the Reich even for "Aryans". The Night of the Long Knives was a big sign a couple of years earlier, however Kristallnacht had yet to happen. The Gestapo was becoming a always-present organization, so my guess is that most well read Germans, though likely enjoying economic and political success given to them by Hitler, could see a storm on the horizon.

There was a recent documentary, if you want to call it that, called simply "Third Reich" on History channel that had 2 parts. A bit sensationalist, despite having some pretty good content... but the one thing that it paints is this amazing picture of pre-war Third Reich Germany and how happy the average German was. Swimming in public parks, vacations being taken, roads being built, factories pumping out goods - but I can't help but feel many Germans knew it was a farce.

Also of note is that '36-'38 are big political years for Hitler, possibly leading to more hope from even well read Germans. The war breaking out quickly squashed that however, in particular Barbarossa in '41.
