Honestly "historical context" is something that gets trotted out without much regard for the actual context. I agree in general mind you and in addition many of Shakespeare's plays were remakes or responses, but just because something was written in the past doesn't mean the past was all fine with it. Taming of the Shrew, for instance, had a lot of blowback from other writers while Shakespeare was still alive.
