This is not true. Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov have relatively happy endings.

do you mean specifically EVERYONE or just some people? because I can think of a lot of books where most people get bad endings

It's not about the jail sentence, it's about the spiritual redemption. The whole fucking point is that their physical situations are bad, but it doesn't matter because they now have faith in something more to sustain them. You missed the point.
