Maybe, but what about visual novels? Can the medium tell a compelling story, or is it just a breeding ground for gimmicks and eroge? I personally think that DDLC actually does represent a positive evolution for the genre, but it will require more to make it a 'serious' medium for storytelling rater than porn. Thoughts? Visual novels with the best writing? I have started Fata Morgana (about two or three hours in) and, as writing goes, it probably has the best I've experienced, but I admittedly have only played a handful over the years.

Holy fuck this is the most awful post I've ever seen. I hope this is copypasta. DDLC is the most gimmicky VN I've ever played. If you think DDLC is 'serious' and not a reaction-bait game to get streamers and youtubers to play it and make it go viral then you are honestly braindead. You are a fucking joke.

Then maybe you can suggest me some good ones?

No.

Because you can't, because they don't exist, because VNs are a trash 'medium'

I've read a lot of visual novels and the only thing that ever stood out as exceptional was the mood that Higurashi created

They are a lot easier to jack off to than literature, though.

VNs produce more trash than good works, but I would not say that VNs are inherently a bad medium. They have a lot of potential, and though one might say it is merely like a picture book I think it would be more apt to compare them to plays or something between plays and books.

I thought a historical dating sim might be interesting, like being a Russian noble dealing with women of status, prominent daughters of nations trying to form alliances and other political relationships.

>DDLC
>OELVN
what are you doing?
>discussing the writing in visual novels
??????? its translated ?????????

The VN that gets the closest to being literature is Wonderful Everyday (Subahibi).

Read Chaos;Child.

>I personally think that DDLC actually does represent a positive evolution for the genre
It isn't anything new. There is an untranslated VN that did the same type of thing years ago.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about bishoujo games, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in English Literature, and I’ve been involved in numerous writing groups, and I have published in many journals. I am trained in creative writing and I’m the top writer in my creative writing class. You are nothing to me but just another pseud. I will deconstruct your prose with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that bishoujo games are not literature over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my IRC buddies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your post. You’re fucking ruined, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can critique you point by point in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just off the top of my head. Not only am I extensively trained in literary criticism, but I have access to the entire catalog of vndb and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable argument off the face of the globe, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” post was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn pseud. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Translations are shit and EOP trash is 10 times worse. If you like DDLC you should seriously kill yourself.

Translations don't necessarily have to be shit but that's almost always going to be the case with eroge (or whatever the fuck people are calling these games nowadays) because a good translator also must be a good writer in general. What's that from, by the way?

I want to recommend to everyone 'Angels With Scaly Wings'. Its not realls Veeky Forums, but one of the best visual novels out there, because the characters are likable.

It's not like they're translating Shakespeare or something.

Isn't the Steins Gate VN supposed to be good? I've only watched the anime but heard good things about the VN.

VN is better, also make sure to play the rest of the SciADV VNs too.

...

bump

Some of those Japs are fair enough writers, though, compared to the weebs involved in translation

I'm not saying translation doesn't matter or anything. Really, if I don't know that a game is at least competently translated I won't bother playing it. But I can't hold them to the same standard I'd hold translations of real literature, you know?

My favorite VN is Clannad. It's the only 'literature' I've read that's ever actually helped me improve my life in any way, so I'll always value it more than any book.

It's honestly pretty good. There isn't anything deep about it, but it's a very nice story that makes you think about your life.

>It's honestly pretty good.
I agree, but it definitely has its flaws. I think it would have been better with less routes and a less convoluted method of completing the game. I also think the anime adaptation made some definite improvements in After Story.
>There isn't anything deep about it,
I guess it depends. I think After Story is primarily about collectivism as the societal extension of the 'family' motif. That's the whole point of the ending, really.
>but it's a very nice story that makes you think about your life.
Certainly. It helped me learn to appreciate my family and accept the realities of adult life and responsibilities.
