Epic poetry, as far as the 21st century goes

Bildungsroman has been hijacked by shity dystopian YA written by women. Bildungsroman have a lot of potential though, and can be really great literature

Why doesn’t anyone write an iliad or beowulf for the modern age? Poetry now is all like

if I write
like this
the first thing that comes to my mind
and I’m a woman of color
people will pretend
to think I have any talent
whatsoever
check my instagram

only 900’s kids will remember real poetry

Not a genre, I remember liking that word when I I first read it

because we can write things down and don't need to perform epics to preserve our legends and history
any attempt now would be wholly insincere

What would it be about?

>Why doesn’t anyone write an iliad or beowulf for the modern age?
The epic poem died in the 19th century. It was a profound death - it didn't simply go out of fashion, the cultural context and ideology that produced them has died out. You can see how in the late stages the epics were decomposing and becoming highly lyrical or (in Pushkin's case) novelistic. Both of those genres replaced it successfully. Writing an epic like Iliad or Beowulf today would be nothing more than LARPing, the only potential heir to the epic poem is the maximalist novel.

>Poetry now is all like
If you learn about poetry from Veeky Forums and pop culture, sure.

It is a genre though. Perhaps not in a thematic sense but its still a distinctive form of novel

This

>stream of consciousness novels/short stories

also sauce/name?

that's so saturated.

Theater wouldn't be underrated if there wasn't so much worthless shit being churned out by Jews and gays

philosophical horror a-la thomas ligotti

There was one of those I read one time that involved worlds or rooms revealing themselves by through books and doors. A talking fish and I think Prague. Trying to describe this makes me feel like I'm trying to tell someone about a dream I had

That sounds a little like Yume Nikki

Harry Potter?

Name?

Enigma

>not giving sauce

people using their phones at the dinner table

So is frankenstien in the epistolary genre? tenchinally yes but you'd never define it as that, you're beinga bit pedantic

Thats a trite argument, thats only because the stronger of the two genres is the more defining one for the book. Same way Heart of Darkness isn't known as a "travel story"

Familiar Essay

Epistolary isn't a genre though. It is a subspecies of the novel, but unlike a genre (which is the most specific way of classifying) it doesn't affect or determine the thematics. An epistoraly novel is nothing in itself, it can be a horror, historical, criminalistic novel or anything else. It is only form.

I wish I knew. I had to read it for an Urban Semiotics class and I only had a pdf saved on my old computer. My memories are so vague its impossible to locate again.

Sauce on the girl, seriously.

This

I am sick and tired of this. Every day I come to Veeky Forums, and every day there is at least one thread up with an OP image of an attractive woman dressed scantily and posing seductively. It's probably the same one or two people who do it honestly. Let me tell you something, you faggot pieces of shit who are doing this: you are the poster child for everything that is wrong in literature, art, and society as a whole today. You are incapable of coming up with anything creative, thought provoking, or of substance, and you lack even the smallest modicum of intelligence, so you use "style" and "flash" and pizazz in place of it and to draw attention to yourself, because that's the only way your SHIT "creation" and ideas would ever get seen by anyone. And before you say anything, this has NOTHING to do with the fact that I don't have a girlfriend. Anyway, I will be petitioning the owner of this website to ban your asses, so enjoy being able to post here while it lasts, because it's not going to last long, just like you that one time you convinced an obese girl to let you fuck her.

In that case its really a matter of how you're defining genre. In music its form not theme that is the defining aspect but I understand theme is more appropriate for books

I'm not pulling that stuff out of my ass, this is agreed upon by scholars.
Music actually fits this system too, because the actual emotional substance of a piece of music won't be determined only by the form but also by the harmony, rhythm, timbre and so on. A 60ies pop song and a heavy metal song may have the same structure/form, but they still belong to different genres and produce very different emotional responses.
The main mistake is in putting the "horror" and "epistolary" aspects on the same level (however you call it). You can't say that one is stronger than the other when they aren't in opposition at all.
