Bury Me Behind the Baseboard and School for fools are essential Soviet depressioncore. Also, this I can't think of any good books set in modern Russia. You can ironically read One life in Russia, it's a diary of a literally insane russophobic liberal and his struggle against everything Russian. I found in quite fascinating in original language. He stopped updating it in English, though.

Not him, but I reckon it's because one doesn't feel the need to be all cheery and happy. It's a "weather of content". Be it sunny or rainy, they're always accompanied by certain feelings, i.e - Finally it's sunny, let's go outside / It's raining, let's stay indoors.
